He didn't volunteer the information:
after he tested positive for THC, a key chemical in marijuana, Hancey’s father said he was denied a spot on the transplant list at University of Utah Hospital.

I think the key point people
I think the key point people are missing in the original article is "Utah". As it turns out this kid ends up being at the best place in the country for this transplant. U Penn Hospital is at the top of the list! One of my best friends from high schools mom had this same surgery in the summer of 1993 at the U of Penn hospital. She lived until the summer of 2004. She participated in the transplant Olympics in Atlanta in 1998 and won 2 medals in swimming. Unfortunately the lungs were in rejection for the last 6 years. However she did get a prolonged life and was able to live quite a few quality years after the transplant. All the best to this kid!

I'm guessing that he volunteered first Ender. I do not think THC detection is standard in a lung transplant situation.

Riley passed away.
Riley passed away.
Statement from the Hancey family:
"It is with heavy hearts, we are devastated to announce that Riley Hancey passed away from complications of a lung transplant. We are extremely thankful to all the wonderful doctors and staff at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Utah for their expertise and care that Riley received. We would also like to thank the donor family, who in their own grief chose to save a life. We will never forget your kindness and generosity.
It has been a long battle to save Riley’s life. We know that in our hearts we gave him every opportunity to survive. He will live in our hearts forever. Riley is now free to climb every mountain, ski the back country, go fishing, and run every river. He will continue to do so with his family in spirit.
In his honor, we ask that you take a moment to do a random act of kindness for someone. Riley’s kind spirit, laughter, and smile will be deeply missed by all that knew him.
More information will be posted soon regarding a celebration of Riley's life."
