The term “OG” has generated some confusion in cannabis genetics -- while many assume that the letters are an abbreviation for “original gangster,” they actually signify that a strain is “ocean grown,”
Since that day, a heated debate has raged in the cannabis community about what exactly the OG stands for in OG Kush.
Given the popularity of the strain in LA, many tokers think it means “Original Gangster” - homage to the hardcore hip hop scene in SoCal in the early 90’s. Close, but no cigar…
Others will swear to you that it means “Ocean Grown”, and that it must be cultivated within a certain number of miles from the breaking waves of the Pacific Ocean to earn the name.
Josh D is amused by the speculation, but definitively ends the debate here once and for all.
“We called it OG because it was authentic… the original,” he says.
The leafly link I posted says “True OG is a popular indica strain that was originally discovered in Southern California, where the term “OG” originally meant “ocean grown”
Forbes: I’ll bet you have many great strains you’ve enjoyed over the decades, but how did you choose your specific strain of OG Kush? What does OG Kush stand for?
JDR: "The “OG Kush” lineage starts back in the 1990s - as a local Floridian favorite known as “Krippy” or “Supernaut.”
For years, “Kush” remained a well-kept secret shared within the Florida growers community. OG Kush is not an easy plant to grow: It is sensitive to light and nutrient levels, and very susceptible to pests. I eventually shared these cuttings and knowledge with numerous friends and growers who would eventually spread “OG Kush” cuttings around the world. We chose the name "OG Kush" because of the aroma coming off the plant, the greasy oily trichomes that shine like diamonds. The tear drop triangle shaped nugs have a very low leaf to calyx ratio with a short flowering cycle. Once we tried the first plant, we realized it was something completely different - personally, it was the most profound high I had ever experienced. You can pick a cultivar after you have really gotten to experience it.
OG stands for Original - so Original Kush. It was meant to designate that this specific Kush was grown by our crew in a specific way.
I'm sensing some cultural inappropriatation going on. Pretty sure Kush is native to the Afghani/Pakistan border. And OG is short for Ogee which is related to smooth reverse bevels of 14th century architecture.
