Pancreatitus

Forums:

Anyone out there have any experience with this?

So my girl has had a second pancreatitis attack in the space of a month. Both times it came on like a freight train and she had to be taken via ambulance to the ER. No definite cause for either attack has been found. After the first attack she went in for and ultrasonic endoscopy and the pancreatic and bile ducts look perfect, no stones, no sludge, no previous damage from passing a stone, nothing.

She was just starting to feel back to normal when this friday BOOM, back with the same thing. First time was 2 days in the hospital. This time she was taken to a shithole place, Lower Bucks Hospital. If you want someone to die from neglect, take them there. Holy fuck what a shitty place, she rotted there for 4 days and wound up worse, finally got her transferred yesterday to Fox Chase where her GI specialist is. The want to go in and stent the pancreatic duct and widen the end so juices will flow out easier but she is so bad they can't even do that right now. Her pain is so bad she was put on a morphine pump but was getting 6 mg every 3 hours before! And she weighs in at a hefty 115 lbs too. That's a lot of opiates but it's the only thing that is taking the pain from a 10 down to a 6 or 7.

Alcohol has been ruled out, we do drink but nothing like what would be needed to cause this. The are thinking a viral cause or she may be the 10% that has no cause. After she gets outa this jam we are going to look at a whole new approach to life in general. No drink, get proper nutrition in order, strengthen the immune system, and seek some help with getting the mind and body back up to par. It's gonna be a long road this time. She'll probably be in until at least this weekend.

Any advice, wisdom, good vibes would be appreciated.

Thank You Zoners

Good luck to her. Some of those small hospitals would just let you die. I have many horror stories about a local hospital here.

There's always a "cause" ... sometimes we just don't know what it is.  Perhaps examine any major dietary or lifestyle / environmental changes as of late.

Might be worth a trip to Mayo or some specialty clinic.

Regardless, sending {{{{healing vibes}}}} your way!

So sorry to hear this. Pancreatitis is one of the most painful illnesses.  Glad you ruled out alcohol. It can be hard to find root problems to stomach issues.

What is her diet?

How much stress does she have?

If interested would be willing to communicate with her...You do not have an email listed?

I'm assuming they did a biopsy?

And yeah, there is always a reason, they just haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Given your close proximity, I would hook up with a specialist at UPenn Med Cntr.  The worst that can happen is they confirm current diagnosis and offer a solid game plan.  Where you are seen makes all the difference.

Good luck, that sounds incredibly painful.

And of course, a more healthful lifestyle is never a bad idea.  (Unless you always wanna feel like shit.)....

Hey Phil_er_up, she was pescatarion for about 10 years but has been slowly introducing some dairy (with lactaid) and some lean meat to try and get calcium and iron levels to where they should be. Highly stressful work with ES kids for the last 12 years, stressfull family life (overbearing parents, brother had some troubles). Usually very happy and hyperactive, but doesn't sleep well. Email me please, she cannot take anymore input/output and needs rest, Thanks. [email protected]

I can only encourage you to do the life changes you've mentioned.  For the past four months I've had no alcohol or drugs, mediated twice a day, worked out at the gym three days a week, run three days a week, and done a yoga class twice a week.  I can't say that everything is bunnies and roses, but it has certainly helped.  I wish I had started this ten years ago when my body would have been more responsive to it.  At 61 you can only expect your body to change so much.

Sorry to hear about this, it's a tough thing to deal with.

Thom, did you have a pancreatic attack?

A little more on her: she's a runner, 1/2 marathons a few times a year. She meditates and does yoga, was starting at the gym. We love to hike and camp, and generally stay active and on the move. She's going a bit nutty in the hospital and hoping that she can do a South Rim to North Rim Grand Canyon trek in mid June, with us meeting up at Bryce and Zion for a second week of camping and hiking. We hate to sit still for too long.

My best friend suffers from this, he first started having attacks after keggers in high school, this made him more a pothead then a drinker,

later in his mid-twenties, he had some devastating attacks that put him in the hospital,

after many tests and a trip to the Mayo(twice) it was determined this was hereditary Pancreatitis.

He lives with this and it's heartbreaking, as he has an attack where he is in so much pain he can not eat anything,

he resists pain pills until he can take it no longer, I'm told that Pancreatitus is one of the worst pains a person can have

and I've seen this first hand, and anyway my friend will give in to pain meds and just become another person until the attack is over,

and now having lost much weight looks different as well, anyway he will start to feeling his old self again until the next attack,

and the this cycle will start all over again.

With that said for my friend the way he stays on top of this debilitating disease is maintaining a healthy diet.

Fruits and vegetables a little lean meat and no dairy! and he found out that not drinking coffee helped.

Fat is the killer here, also stress is key, I could see a stressful situation involving my friend followed by an attack that I know over time was not a coincidence.

When my friend sees a doctor for Pancreatitis they check his bloods lipase levels,

the higher the level the more pain he's in.

Anyway sometimes this can be a one time occurrence, and not life long.

 And Good Luck To Her!

No insight or advice, just wishing her a speedy recovery.

I have a friend who had a similar experience, pancreatitis with incredible pain. He did have surgery, a shunt or stent, recovered and is doing fine. It was a fairly quick recovery, too.

The pain your sweetie is going though! I hope it abates quickly, somehow. It must be so difficult for you, too. Pancreatitis is a very dangerous inflammation and it really sucks that she had such poor care for so long. Wishing you both well.

Thanks everyone, much love received is doing her well.

As all here said. The best o' luck.

All i got for ya is good vibes...and a quick story...

One of my cousins had it few years back...this was just a cpl years after admitting a huge "unknown" problem w alcohol...(he hid it very well for someone drinking over a qt of vodka a day..even wife had no clue)...so....doctor says, in your case, its like 98% chance alcohol related, or it could be genetic"..

He says..." fuck, i got it from Dad???"

True story....but...i can tell you...he said the pain was like NOTHING he had ever felt before...he said he d be in fetal position in house, basically in tears, when an attack came...he finally had surgery, and that also took a while to recoup from...it was a long ordeal for sure...but, he s fine now...and yes, w a complete new diet regiment also

I send thoughts, vibes and energy your way....glad to hear you got her into much better place!

Best wishes to your woman heart

KEEP THE GOOD VIBES COMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just back from Fox Chase and OMG what a day and excellent care have made! My babe looks so much better, feels still pretty bad but much better overall. These beautiful people have got her on the right track!!!! Never ever settle for substandard care EVER!!!!

She has the stent procedure on the schedule now, looking at Friday for it and going home.

In talking to her GI Doc, he mentioned that cystic fibrosis can cause major pancreatic problems and GUESS WHAT?!!!!!!!! My girl's daughter has cystic fibrosis. That means that my girl has a gene mutation that, of itself, does not cause CF but in combo with the Dad causes it. So while she does not have CF the mutation can cause pancreatic insufficiency and with her high stress levels as a trigger.........it mat not be 100% the cause but is a MAJOR piece in the puzzle. Her GI doc kept saying that there must be something else and we think this is it. He actually sat in her room with us and talked and discussed things for about 20 minutes tonight, and that was at 7:30 this evening! I cannot say enough about Dr. Bartell at Fox Chase. High honors and praise to this fine physician and the whole team there.

I am so fucking glad!!! Thank you zoners and the gods that be. It truly takes caring thoughtful people and spirituality to make thing better and ya'll have PROVED IT!!!!!

Peace, Love, Good Vibes and happy times too all!

Thank You!!!!!

So glad that things are turning around. Still sending the good juice to her and you.

Nurses have told me pancro illness turns strong men into children. Glad she is feeling better.

Email coming this morning RocknRye.

"Thom, did you have a pancreatic attack? "

No, I just decided to try and make life better by doing some positive things for my mind and body.  But I know some people who have been through this and I know that it's a hard thing to deal with.

It sounds like she's already been doing a good job of taking care of herself, hopefully that will help her heal faster.   Vibes going your way.

Thanks dude, all the info and advice is great and helps, much love to all.

Update: She looked great last night and is ready to get out, however today she is scheduled for an ERCP in the late morning and should be able to go after that. YAY!!!!!!

A nice wheelchair assisted stroll of the grounds and gardens last night was like being on vacation for her.

I had found a guy that went to Fox Chase and did some REIKI on her and that helped her feel a bit more balanced. After a few days in a hospital bed you really start to feel useless and lost and that realigned her.

Thanks for all the advice and help everyone and especially Patrick for his vast and painfully acquired wisdom on the matter.

Viva La Zone!

Glad to have helped and it is great she is doing better.

The escape from the room sounds freeing, and the Reiki no doubt helped a lot. You are helping her and taking care of her so well!

I hope it all goes smoothly. Being home.... ahhhh.
