Howdy Zone,
Looking forward to the show.
In addition to my seats up front, I have 3 tix in Orch Row Z as well.
(I suspect that there may have been alcohol involved ....)
Old fashioned paper tix, so they would need to be mailed soon. The money spent will be my stupidity fine.
First post gets them

This is a kind offer.
This is a kind offer.
My one time seeing Metheny went kind of funny. It was at the Van Duzer Theater in Arcata, California, in the late 1990s, part of what was then called Humboldt State University.
It was a seated show, and I had a seat on the mid-floor in front of the soundboard. He and his band were all playing great, but their ambient fusion put me to sleep. I guess I was sleep-deprived, as I'm not a narcoleptic and don't usually pass out in public. I was snoring too, which woke me from my nap. There were a few older fans looking at me crosseyed. I gave them my best sad eyes "I'm sorry" look and struggled to stay awake the resf of the show.
So maybe get a cup of coffee before the show?
Hope you all have a great time, it sounds like it will be a fun night.
Do not Go To Sleep At The Show!

Enjoy the show! Nice gift.
Enjoy the show! Nice gift.
Please forgive the reminiscing… June 1979 and I was a broke college student in Worchester, Mass. I got a second summer job as "nightwatchmen" at a local recording studio – Longview Farms – one of the first “band lives on a beautiful farm by day, while working at night” studios. Never leave. Minimize the distractions of the city. It was founded by a philosophy professor at my school, of all people. It was a state of the art mid-70s New England studio – J Geils’s main hangout. Stevie Wonder was their first celebrity guest (before my time) and the Stones stayed there shorty after.
My job was to get there by dinner time, help the chef clean the big pots and pans, get the two recording studios ready, prepare the party room (with a “new” NovaBeam projection tv), be a go-fer during recording, and clean up the studios when the bands were finished (including the mirrors and rolling trays), mop floors and stuff, and light a fire when the first person woke up. Then leave. I basically had the whole farm to myself at night – and more importantly to my starving roommates – access to their freezer. Chock full of Pepperidge Farm cookies and meat.
During my short tenure, Pat Metheny and his band arrived to record basic tracks for American Garage. One day my assignment was to sweep out a cellar room and drag some equipment down there. Someone liked the acoustics, I guess. Not only did I get commended from the boss about my great cleaning job, but I got to hear Pat record, what I remember to be, his guitar track for the single American Garage. In one take. I think that’s what they used on the album. I also remember Pat didn’t drink booze but asked for tomato juice. Also got to hear Lyle Mays play on an amazing grand piano while I was doing chores. I guess they were there for a about a week.
Due to the summer of 79 gas shortage (the farm was a short commute out of town, but there were still long gas lines at the stations) and lack of sleep, I had to quit my budding career as a recording engineer because it was impacting my other more important day job (taking care of the birds in the psychology lab). I regret leaving before I got to play a mysterious Studer 2-inch reel of a tape I found upstairs in an official-looking box, while poking around in their tape library – it was labeled Wake of The Flood. I don't know how it got there.

^ Don, I was 21 and not
^ Don, I was 21 and not clueless, but I didn't realize at the time what I was hearing. The album wasn't released until Nov.
I was just coming off a run of May79 Dead shows (Hampton Coliseum, Balto Civic, Billerica, and UMass) and I was more interested in hearing my cassettes played thru the studio speakers (the engineer trusted me enough to use the cassette players). Here's Studio A (where most of the American Garage tracks were recorded):
Studio B was in the barn for second tier bands.
The rec room I kept clean and fully stocked for post session relaxing (a more modern photo since the NovaBeam was replaced by when this was taken):
They had a bunkhouse / bedrooms for the band members.
It was a working farm and I didn't have to care for the animals, but I do remember wandering around the barn at night and climbing up to the cupola to get stoned at sunrise -- it was supposed to be the highest (elevation) in central Mass. Funny what you remember.
I also remember that they took stuff out to the garage (pictured above) to shoot the back cover, but I didn't have to schelp anything because it was a daytime shoot.

Wow, Dontser! Thank you so much for your generosity and kind words towards me...
I've been pre-occupied with Radio deadlines and recording some live gigs, so I hadn't read through the entire thread until now. Lots of cool personalities and stories within, so cool!
Catching up now, I have a few questions and comments to add. To wit:
Don, seems like you have some social engagements d.o.s. so I guess I won't be able to thank you in person this time, but I may be in New Paltz around 10/23-24 for Sam Grisman @ Levon's Barn. (I got the last reserved seat for that show!) Maybe we could meet up in New Paltz?
Jerry, I love meeting Zoners, so yes, let's Pre-game! We'll be seated together in Row Z so there's that!
NYC Dave, would you by chance be the same as the fine gent I call 'Dapper Dave', often wearing a suit to shows???
I'm quite excited about this show! Thanks!!!

I can't think of another word
I can't think of another word for it, Pat Metheny is a master. Last night was one of the most impressive displays of guitar playing I've ever seen. I'm not a huge fan of jazz guitar by any means, but, for me, he made it impossible not to appreciate the guys talent. I can't say I'll be downloading all his albums anytime soon, but the show was a treat from start to finish. Plus almost 2 1/2 hours with no break playing solo is no easy feat. Not sure why, but I was really impressed when, in the middle of a medley, he went into Wichita Lineman. Go figure. But this show will not be easily forgotten.
And the zoner meet-up! Finally got meet Bob, which was a real pleasure. The dinner conversation was first rate, with his friend Garrett and I discussing -what else- guitarists. Oh, and there's that Lewiston show that came up!
Sorry Don, we only got to meet for a quick minute, but am very grateful for the ticket.
All in all, a good time was had by all, and I do hope we meet again, sooner rather than later.

Methaney - masterful, Garcia
Methaney - masterful, Garcia or Grisman level playing with a style 110% all his own.
He looks down at his fingers when he plays, so often - the audience only sees his guitar and a mushroom of hair :->
...and the ultimate comment from the fours wind and the universe:
I was strutting with my 4 Row AA tix! Hot shit despite mistakenly buying 3 bad seats in the back.
Those row Z tix were SO bad, I'll just give them away.....
SO SO many lesson to me in this experience.
1) Carnegie Hall has Row AA located 1 row behind Row Z
2) pick your tix, but don't buy them til the morning after too much alcohol
3) Anything whatsover related to the Zone tends to result in the happiest of Cosmic Burps (reluctant to refer to Cosmic flatulence, but We're not proud)
Zoners in 3d are the best!

Pat has always been a
Pat has always been a one-of-a-kind magician with the guitar, able to create mesmerizing, dynamic soundscapes unlike other players. I've heard many after him who sound like him, but is there anyone who has sounded like him BEFORE him?
Personally, a solo performance would not be my choice, as it almost never is with any musician, but I can easily see how this would have been a satisfying, mesmerizing performance.
Pat Metheny has always been a unique, amazing player, crossing seamlessly from traditional jazz guitar to his own style of groovy, often trippy playing. It would be great to see him form one more super group and see where that could go, but at 71 (how is THAT possible?) it's just fine that he's still out there playing.
Keep on going.

>>>Carnegie Hall has Row AA
>>>Carnegie Hall has Row AA located 1 row behind Row Z<<<
Whoops!
I've done that.
>>>pick your tix<<<
In this day and age, ALWAYS pick your tix off the map, or if that's not an option then refer to a dependable seating chart before buying. A lesson I've learned the hard way.
Still, in this case it probably was still a fine location.
This show was in the newer venue, not the original main hall, correct?
How does that compare to the legendary main room?
As a hopeless venue geek, I'm endlessly interested in this type of thing.
