Icon: Music Through the Lens - on Camera

Showing on PBS, repeated (in OPB Oregon) on Sunday, I don't know about elsewhere. What I saw tonight was pretty great.

Featuring in-depth and often irreverent interviews with the world’s best-known music photographers, musicians, gallerists, music journalists and social commentators, Icon: Music Through the Lens is an eye-opening, six-part, thrill ride through the amazing world of music photography.

Cool. It starts here in about an hour.

I set my little recorder thingy.

Thanks.

I watched the first episode in full yesterday and was really glad - great photos of great musicians by great (or at least excellent) photographers. Iconic, indeed.

I thought it was good and I'll watch the second episode, but clearly it was a British-produced show that focused almost completely on British photographers.

They did have a couple of quotes from the great Michael Zagaris, and hopefully he'll be more incorporated in the next show, but IMO, no matter where you're from or what region or country you're focusing on, if you're going to have a show about rock 'n roll photography and don't include or even mention Jim Marshall, that's pretty much a fail.

Annie Leibovitz needs to be in there as well.

Still, it was worth the time.

Let's see where they go with it. I thought I saw a photo or two that was credited to Jim Marshall, but of course they can't interview him. Yes, Annie Leibovitz should be there, too. I haven't looked to see what/who the other episodes will cover. There are 6 of them, right?

This has tipped me over the edge to becoming a "Passport" member so I can stream anything on OregonPB anytime.

Sounds interesting.  What about Robert Mapplethorpe?  Just for his work with Patti Smith, he should get a mention.  He also did notable work with Deborah Harry, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, Iggy Pop, Grace Jones and Joan Armatrading.

I didn't realize there were six episodes.

And while they can't interview Marshall, they sure as hell can talk about him.

They better get to the truly great rock photographers with six episodes.

Even Sushi should get a mention!

Sueshi and Mr. Sadler, both.

Did you look at the PBS link that Matt posted?

I really enjoyed Episode 2, which played tonight in Oregon. Instructive, entertaining, great pics, lots of info. And yes, there was a good segment on Jim Marshall.

I've watched 4 of the 6 episodes so far... good stuff!

FYI -- the expiration date for free online viewing has already happened for episode 1, and is soon to happen for episodes 2 and 3

No Jim Marshall -?-  not good.

Jim Marshall and his work are talked about and shown. I got a good sense of the man. Since it was made after he died there are no current interviews.

There are amazing photographs and insights throughout the series. I just watched episode five of the six. This is a very meaningful series to me; musicians and photographers…
