Wouldn't think of moving to DeSantistan. Wonder how the folks currently on Medicare feel about that? Always had a reputation as a place to retire. Good luck on that next election, Rick. Though many people have a hard time realizing what programs are "socialism.'
Having never visited Florida, from out here on the Left Coast it really does look like a shit-hole state (with apologies to the many fine, decent citizens who I am sure live there amidst the crazy blue meanies).
Another solid fucking year of this balderdash for them to decide on which blue meanie will represent them.
Then they go up against Uncle Joe. He is not my favorite person by far, but he knows the workings of "the system" as well as anyone and far better than most. His gnarled old hand is steady guiding the ship of state through troubled international waters. I trust my interests and safety far more under his watch than I would with ANY of these Republican weasels.
>>>Will they? Seems like people don't care, don't pay attention, will forget.
No one cares including the media. Spewing radical bullshit is just built into the Republican brand these days. The media doesn't hold them accountable - they are treated like 2 year olds running through the house knocking stuff off the tables.
Now imagine if Newsome made a video telling conservatives not to come to California.
Just like any state it has it's highs and lows. There are some great beaches and university towns among other destinations that I enjoy when I visit. couple that with the Brandon banners and it's an interesting place.
I was less than a month away from retiring (serving seniors as a caseworker) when a guy came into our office. The lady at the front liked giving these walk-ins to me. He started out by telling me I had to read a letter he wrote before we talked. His wife had died and he was having "trouble" paying his property taxes. It went into his income and expenses. Unfortunately, he came in a few days after the deadline (Sept 1st) for property tax help from the Treasurer's Office, but I suggested he check with them to see if they'd help him. "Oh they won't." Okay. He knew about the program there but never bothered to check with them.
Turns out he married a woman older than he, and when she retired, they took off and cruised around the country on her retirement money. Good times. Seems like they went through it. Then she died. He still owned the home. The property tax notice said it was worth at least $300,000, but those are often low ball estimates. He said "Yeah, and I still owe $40,000 on the mortgage." He was claiming poverty but I reminded him he was sitting on a quarter of a million dollars in equity, and could look into doing a reverse mortgage. "Oh, I told her boys I would never do that to them."
But the thing was, when he started the conversation, he told me right off the bat that he hated Biden, HATED SOCIALISM, and loved Trump 'cause he was the only person that told the truth. He asked me for what I thought and I told him he probably wouldn't like my answers. I really wanted to lay into this "anti-socialist" who was looking for a government handout while sitting on AT LEAST $250,000 and getting Social Security after leisurely cruising around the country on an extended trip, but I didn't want to get fired weeks away from retirement.
The word socialism is such a misunderstood word, and if those on Social Security and other programs had a clue, it wouldn't have the negative connotation it has. Stark contrast to how often Woody Guthrie promotes the hell out of it as the solution to most everything in his book I'm reading, "Pastures of Plenty."
I have been to and have had extended visits in FL countless times over the years but not since 2015. There are plenty of weirdly strange people everywhere in the world and while the state's current grip of crazy politicians and some of their follower-worshippers currently want to pretend that FL exists in some sort of vacuum and that only 'like-minded' people live there, that is very obviously simply not true. I am pretty sure that taking their message nationwide will tank while overall acceptance and tolerance will win but I guess we're going to find out. Hell, I lived in UT for 20 years and not everyone there is batshit far-right out-to-lunch "religious" whack either. Just like not everyone in CA is a far-left "socialist" either. Some people we see out there today have to yell a lot louder in trying to convince other people that their message is the one that should dominate and rule - just like the very few crazy Nazi types who plaster areas with their hateful trash placards trying to take over the basic conversation and pretend it is widespread. Ignore these jackhandles for what they are as they settle into the dustbin of society and history.
But, yea, Rick Scott, Disantis, et al can provide some real entertainment but at the same time it is very sad how they barely disguise their bigoted racism, especially as higher profile political figures. Trumpism set out attempting and has somewhat succeeded in making this at least acceptable and it is not.
One of my favorite dumb Republican moments was when the person at a meeting about the coming Obamacare legislation said that the government better keep their hands off of his Medicare.
The problem with Florida is that about 90% of boomer rabid Republicans from cold states have retired there. So FL politics are kind of fucked for a while, but they are antivax so we are one nasty variant away from things going back to FL being a swing state again.
I agree that Democratic Socialism is the way to go. But I think humans(some much more than others) are greedy by nature. Capitalism encourages and nurtures it for sure, but whatever the gov't, humans will find a way to take advantage of those less greedy(or intelligent, or immoral, or whatever).
