I have been meaning to post about the show I caught on Sept. 10. in Del Mar at The Sound a coll little venue they put in place of the off track betting satilate that used to be there. It is run by the folks who run The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.
I thought it was really really good. Hearing Peter Rowan singing Midnight Moonlight and Mississippi Moon, which I guess he wrote according to him, was great. The traditional Cold Rain & Snow was fantastic. No Panama Red but no biggie as the quality of the musicians was so good it didn't really matter what songs they were playing. The fiddle player and the banjo player were absolutely fantastic. Free Mexican Airforce was also pretty cool. I am really glad I went.
It also got me thinking that if Rowan and Nelson are still out on the road then if Jerry were still with us he would be too, only probably too big to play in cool small projects like this. Any of you Zoners see Old and In The Way? I bet that was a fun show to see.

Except for the bass solo he often includes, I absolutely love Rowan's version of Cold Rain & Snow.

sorry i did not run into you
sorry i did not run into you SD.
i also went to the show. i got to say it was very odd. this was a seated show at a mid sized venue and was maybe 1/3rd sold? pretty damned sparse, sam did not have to shush the crowd...
my friends really love the grisman band and I saw them last year at the troubadour. I like them, sure, but I dunno, they are just ok?
i was under the impression that this was an old and in the way show. it was not, I mean they played a few tunes from it, but not completely. Pete was on/off the stage with them as a guest. he had no handler or guitar tech. Pete of course elevated the experience quite a lot but didn't play the whole set, or 2nd set.
Pete also called out his brother out of the audience? Lorin, I believe, who I am familiar with of Rattlebox...his phone went off and he couldn't turn it off....He later was again called up to sing with Pete. Just thought everything about the whole show was odd and at times bordered on being unprofessional.
your mileage may vary, and of course there were great moments.
my friends not familiar with Pete and his catalog. It's fun turning people on to shit they should know about.
oh yeah, and no panama red for markd! ha ha!

I hear ya Turtle it was odd
I hear you, Turtle. It was an odd choice of venue. The Belly Up probably would have had too many talkers for Sam. I wonder if this could have been pulled off at Winstons? I had those first-row balcony seats, which I love at that venue. I took my son Max, who continues to assimilate into the collective. This being the first time I have seen Rowan in decades, I had my rose-colored glasses on. Plus, there is nothing like enjoying the music we love live with my son.
