Phil and the Bus Boys - Beak and Skiff

Forums:

So last night was the perfect example of why you go to the show, no matter who Phil is playing with.  This lineup got a lot of flack from so many, yet turns out, was probably the best one of the three shows Phil played so far on the east coast.

Just an absolute incredible display of what this man can still do…at 82 years old mind you.

Ya...no Warren, or Jimmy, or Sco, or whoever...just the boys who Phil has been playing with for the past X amount of years.  It's no doubt, that both Jason Crosby and Stu Allen have dedicated their musical career to playing the soundtracks of my life.  Each of them so incredibly talented...and know how to dig deep when it matters.  This was a rehearsed band...and it showed,

And Cody Dickinson...my absolute new favorite PL&F drummer sans Mt. St. Molo.  Holy crap...that boy can play the skins, and knows when to drive, when to support, and when to lay back.  All while driving, if that makes any sense,

The first set was pretty good and what you would expect…and Phil let the kids play in the sand until the final song.  Ripple.  It was like no other I have heard, wasn’t even sure what it was until Phil started the lyrics.  It was fast, it had grit, it had Phil laying down those bass tracks…like only he can do.  It was a message…the second set I’m coming for you, so be prepared.

And that he did…

Just a sublime second set from start to finish, every song a highlight.  And Phil’s bass was sending out notes and tracks that take you on that magical journey…that only he can do.  He is just phenomenal.

And the rare double encore…which was pretty special at that.

One of the magical moments...With the sunset to the left of us, and the moon rising above us, Phil gave us the gift of a beautiful Mountains of the Moon.  Amy Helm (who is music royalty in my book), was just, exactly, perfect.

Ya just never know when you're going to get the shit....

Phil was on fucking fire!

And JFTR, one of a handful of shows that I've gone stone cold sober to...and I mean stone cold.  It's weird, I always get a little anxious when I don't drink or puff at a show, almost like I'm missing something. But last nightnwas different....I was able to tap in to my past experiences, and I was off to the races.

Oh...and the Venue was just gorgeous!

My.
Heart.
Is.
Full.

Go to the show!

Imagine for a second if Ripple and Dead Flowers had a baby....

Sounds like the rocking Ripple. I saw one of those at the BBLV about 7-8 years ago.

Very nice review Ro-j, thanks for the effort.

And while I have no negative comments on the other, bigger named groups Phil plays with, I personally strongly agree that players who know the music, know the style of GD improv and know each other are often more important to the quality of the music then their resumes.

Also, players who are comfortable in the music & with each other know how to lay back and leave space in the music, which allows Phil Lesh to step forward, and that is NEVER a bad thing.

Oh, and I also agree about Dickinson. I've never been a big fan of his better-known brother, but the number of times I've seen Cody play with Phil he has seriously impressed me every time.

LLPL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LLTGD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil is playing with people that considerably less talent than him, 82 or not.  I hope he sounds good.

Frankly, Phil can do whatever he wants but he is not putting in the work and it shows.

^^^^I hope he sounds good.

^^^ he is not putting in the work and it shows.

hmm

Great review, i've been enjoying all the streams, and agree with all the positive comments.  (Who'd a thunk he'd cover the Chicago tune "Saturday in the Park" the show before, nailed it too!)

My worrysome observation would be that his fretting is getting a little loose. He's living and loving in the moment, but fingers are a little slippery in their exactness.  But it's been getting better show by show.  I've been playing bass / guitar for 45 years, and notice these little things.  Has nothing to do with his note choice, but the execution of playing that note.

But practice makes perfect, seems as the summer goes along, he's tightening that aspect up a little bit better with every performance. Otherwise, I think Phil (and Bobby) are knocking the vocals out of the park.  Harmonies have been tight, with all that "emotional integrity" Jerry embraced you with every time!

Still hoping a recording from Eugene pops up, that 2nd set looks cray cray

Oh Jimmy

One million percent everything you said and experienced

Mountains of the Moon was so much for Howie

Words fail the beauty of nature that apple orchard's magic sustains. The Mountains, stage placement,  gentle slope of the field that's made for dancing, and THAT SKY!!¡!!

even before sunset, the clouds were simply stunning! The waxing moon in Libra>Scorpio rose as the sun set, creating a blazing explosion of pinks and oranges, juxtaposed with Mama to the left.... of where I was lol

When we were talking later, RoJ remarked at how few other folks seemed to have awareness of the celestial majesty accompanying the delicately and fiercely woven tapestry of music that was the alchemy of this feast of Phriends

HOT Damn

ALSO!!! Not only saw my old pal, zoner Stagger615, his most lovely wife M was with him, and since I'd already seen Matt at the prior 2 shows, was so extra thrilled that his equally amazing half made it to such a special event as this
