Phil at The Anthem DC 10/25/2017

Forums:

Doors 6 show begins at 7:30.  Anyone else?

Game on !

Are you ironing your tie-dye? :)

No need for ironing if you fold properly right after drying. I'm going with my go to, green Phil and Friends established 1998..or the dark brown with Jackie and Larry.

HAVE FUN !!

Thanks

Preshow prediction, Preservation Jazz Band saves the day.

Preshow prediction: Ross James' voice will drive you batty.

Preshow prediction: Nicki Bluhm sings Me and Bobby McGee and one verse of FOTD.

The venue is right next to the Maine Avenue fish market, raw oysters and black clam gazpacho. Jessie Taylor seafood market, front side at 6:30. Pre game.

so this is a brand new venue??

Raw seafood pre-show is risky.

Living on the edge, if i'm anywhere close to that stand i'm diving in..

Yes new, huge project going on gentrification style.

Doubly so when purchased on lot

The Jimps will be there.   Think he might play "Ain't That A Shame"?

>>>Raw seafood pre-show is risky.

You ain't kiddin. Had some before DNB in PA. Had to leave show and spent the night in hotel bathroom puking/shitting. If I recall correctly, the restaurant we ate at was called The Ugly Oyster.  Truth in advertising, that.

Good lookin out boys. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

stream??

Like this Viola w/ horns yes

Very groovy. Loved the N'Orleans dixieland feel to Viola. Now on to a haunty sounding O1!

Sound's been good on the 'broughton'  feed.  And no cutting out 'buffering'  so far.

Other one fell apart

monkey man

Throwing Stones

For those keeping score;

Viola
Other One
Monkey Man
Intro:  Alex Koford
Throwin'  Stones

The 1st letter of each selection spells "VOMIT"  reflecting  Fog's raw Oyster and Lot sashimi conundrum.

Hahaha!

I agree about Broughton being the best sounding stream.

Also horn players from The Preservation Hall Jazz Band made Monkey Man (& the whole set so far) sound swell!

I've enjoyed what I heard.  Looking forward to Asbury Park tomorrow.
Had not extremely high expectations for the TFB ensemble,  but they have something fresh with the Horns.

thanks for the stream... much appreciated

Holy huge energy!!!!

I feel very lucky to have access to this stream,  and just enough technology to enjoy it in pretty damn decent Soundscape.

This evening I recalled that my new-ish Tivoli Audio sound machine has an AUX. in jack and plugged one of the channels in from the PC.

Its mini-subwoofer lets me hear Bass waaaayy better than the dinky USB plug-in speakers wink

Encore:
Donor Rap
Ripple

Nice Ripple encore, but sped up like that? I prefer the American Beauty version. Phil's voice sounded good though.

Thanks Dave for setlist...:)

I came in late and at Jack O' Roses. it sure sounded good to me !  Looking forward to Fri nite and I scored a row A seat ((( great for short people))).

Sounded pretty good !!

I really liked the Horns and hope they get even Funkier.

The 'Tivoli'  thang is one of these,  sort of like a Bose Wave Radio the size of a Toaster.

im_0.jpg

It's a CD + AM/FM and has the two speakers visible + a subwoofer underneath.  Then there's an AUX input and it's a clock-radio too.  See one at the garage sale,  grab it !!  not a bad little piece of gear.

Besides Hunter has any other members of the Grateful Dead played Jack O' Roses previously?  That's a real rarity!

Seems like Broken Arrow has become a rarity, unless I've just missed it.

How long did that complete Terrapin take?

nice recording:

rest of show is up, too ...

can't really fault the setlist on Wed... I thought the only weak part of the show was Phil trying to play NO style funk (he can't) and too much R Randolf grates on me when he gets all 10K repetitive screechy. But the band seemed to enjoy the opportunity to play in a bigger room than usual with a big sound system.

<How long did that complete Terrapin take?>

Soundcloud says 27 minutes

>> Besides Hunter has any other members of the Grateful Dead played Jack O' Roses previously?  That's a real rarity!

I think Brian wrote new music for it and the Family Band has been doing it semi-regularly at TXR

>> Seems like Broken Arrow has become a rarity, unless I've just missed it.

It was scarce for a long time, but Phil's been doing it more with the Family Band of late

Jack O Roses was really nice to hear and i thought they did a good job on it.

We were at the back of the floor in front of the sound board first set, nice acoustics and sound was excellent mix wise ect.

Really surprised at how many people were there and if it would have been a weekend show i'm sure it would have been packed.. Hopefully he returns there in the future.

After seeing Phil at the Cap quite a few times and comparing the overall aroma to DC's Anthem its clear the folks in the balcony at the Cap need to step up their game and stop it with the nasty brown schwag burning rez screen smell. I don't smoke anymore btw but i know the difference between good and bad. Not one whiff wednesday of burning screens, only sweet sweetness all around.

Robert Randolph did fine IMO, i found him to have a decent grasp on the tempos and for this band i'd prefer to have him there than not.. Although he's no Barry Sless hahahaaaa.

Kudos to Phil for handing over the Terrapin vocals to Graham.

Preservation Hall Jazz band were excellent,  Their trombone player is a bad ass jammin mofo... Monkey Man is one of the best life performances i have seen recently from any band..

Hope they hang on to Nicki.

Overall they exceeded my expectations, not 100% perfection with a small bit of floundering around here and there but overall they kicked ass and sounded great, big sound and good energy.

LOVED IT !
