Phil & Bobby solo shows - Perplexing blog post

For many fans of the Grateful Dead, the Dead & Company outfit rings a bit hollow because only one original voice is being heard through the current lineup. Even Bill Kreutzmann openly criticized Dead recreations like Further and Ratdog for merely being dressed up cover bands. Of course they weren’t but that made for juicy press pickups that likely aided in the selling of his bio.

Well now a bill that all Dead fans can celebrate is making limited first time run. Bassist Phil Lesh and guitarist Bob Weir have committed to a handful of early March shows in New York, Boston and Chicago. Together they will truck out at least two songs that Dead fans haven’t heard them sing together in quite some time. Namely Phil’s gems: Box of Rain and Sugar Magnolia.

The Dead have always been a collection of talents rather than a solo or even duo act. Having seen Ratdog perform as three person acoustic outfit at CES a bunch of years ago it was clear that they prefer (and sometimes require) the safety of numbers. Any musical misstep is better covered in that environment. That said, you have to hand it to these guys for finding a way to get a set list together so quickly and getting a tour scheduled on the fly. It’s already sandwiched between two very active runs (Weir resumes his touring with Dead & Company immediately following the last performance with Lesh). No matter how this all goes down, it will have been all worth it if it results in Phil dropping by and lending a hand at some future Dead & Company shows.

Yes, they will practice at soundcheck....on the fly!

I don't think one sentence in that is accurate

i will be shocked if a single song played on this whole tour is any good.

a perplexing blog post to go with a perplexing tour.

Billy criticized Ratdog for being a GD cover band :)

But...but...but Ratdog was "jazzy".

"Stuff"

I think there's gonna be a lot of "What was I thinking?" related to this thing.

Maybe from those of us passing on it.

But right now I'm thinking notwink

That said, I think it might be pretty cool to hear just Phil's bass in a place like Radio City.

Which will probably happen.

While Bob is fiddling wit knobs.

I hate to sound negative, but I have a bad feeling about these shows.. like they might seriously suck

I'm sure y'all heard Bob and Phil in the studio circa 1984?

One of my favorite drummers. Whatever happened to that guy?

Special guest by the 2nd show.

seeing as this is the PHILzone im sure many will not agree with me on this, but imo hearing just phil's bass is hugely over rated in any venue or context.

Phil in an intimate, small group setting intriques me but having Weir in the band gaurantees slow dirge like tempos. I really love the work Bob did in the Grateful Dead but he is unbearable nowadays. Drop Weir & add the Lesh boys, you will have a much better chance of me purchasing a ducat.

I'm sure these shows will be like the concert on Mount Tam. They will start out as an acoustic duo and by the time Weir picks up the electric they will have "special guests" joining them.

Now that the checks r rolling Billy’ s way....intergrity b damned...he was just a bittter old man...jealous he was Kicked to the curb when phil and bob started furthur...just another cover band was the quote ..high-larious

The very first Furthur show opened with just Bob and Phil jamming before the rest of the band joined them. I thought it was pretty cool.

Two-hours cool?

Although this jam sucked some big balls, the first Furthur show is the one I enjoyed the most. Saw many "better" ones thereafter, but the first night will always stick.

Lets put it this way....I'm sure it will have the cool factor of phil and bobby playing together..that's def cool.. it will be okay, however with that said I had a friend offer me a choice of either the show in NYC or Jrad in Syracuse...he had and extra for both...So I said I'll take Jrad...lol..

The Phil / Bobby ticket was also mine if I wanted it and originally I was going, but then a good friend of mine passed away. He and his wife both have been around me and shows since 91 or earlier and I told my buddy to give the ticket to her...She needs it more than I do.  Truthfully the Solo show didn't mean much to me at all...I love phil to death so its nothing on him or bobby for that matter...I like what jrad is doing...
