Just as well I'm not there.  I think this show is running later than the last train out of Port Chester.

Thanks Taperrob!!!!

So, was that Ross James "singing" on Stagger Lee? Because that was just damn awful. Had to shut down the video. I'll normally give anything a chance, but damn...

So was there actually no inter song improvisation before Bad Moon Rising?

>> So was there actually no inter song improvisation before Bad Moon Rising?

PHB finished, stage was cleared, Phil came back, they tuned up and then played it. Then it went pretty smoothly right into Playin'.

That 2nd set looks like a big steaming pile of poo.

The Apartment Song!! Whaaaaaaaaaaaat??!!!!!

phil never delivers on halloween, the tfb certainly wasn't going to change that.

It was a very fun show. Clearest and loudest Phil I've heard in quite a while. Major bomb during the Sugar Mags. Preservation Hall guys added a lot in the first half of the second set. Also, TFB + Barraco + Robert Randolph + Nicki Bluhm is lightyears better than TFB alone.

I was also stumped by "The Apartment Song".  I missed it last night.  I just googled it.  Apparently it's a Tom Petty song.  I'd never heard it.  Anyway, I'm glad Phil is still playing live.  I guess if he wants to be in a bar band, let him be in a bar band.  The Preservation Hall guys sounded super tight and energetic in the second set, imho.

Huge props for breaking out such a great obscure Petty tune!!

"TFB + Barraco + Robert Randolph + Nicki Bluhm is lightyears better than TFB alone."

That's why they were there.  I'm sure it was a good time at the old Cap.

The afro beat jam with horns surpassed any expectations.

>>>phil never delivers on halloween.

I'm inclined to agree.

The one exception I can think of was the joint in 05'.

or was that the day before Halloween?

i know it started at midnight, had a couple trippin attendees dressed as skeletons, let out at 5am and was awesome.

that much I'm sure of!

Sigh,

image_166.jpegMy camera just loves Nicki Bluhm.

Man I just cannot get behind anything that that tool-lookin' bearded guitarist does. Not a fucking thing. Take your barefoot mgmt antics backstage and hire a RESPECTABLE GUITARIST, jesus god maybe one that wears some fucking classy go-go boots or some shit.

Get this no-playing, no-singing turd back to California.

^indeed.

ross james is a no talent clown. wtf is he doing on stage. shameful shit, phil lesh.

It is shameful! Bar band or no this guy got the break of his life by getting involved with managing the expo window at TXR or whatever CL ad he fucking responded to.

Sheesh.

For the record, he was wearing shoes at these gigs.

Monster of a show, Shadow of the Moon Tour started a couple weeks later, Larry Campbell hired to replace Herring....

>> For the record, he was wearing shoes at these gigs.

Word and I'm sure they were good shows, nonetheless, the weakest link makes all the difference. Glad they had the strength of the Headband but get this guy and his clown shoes (or his lack of clown shoes) outta here. I don't have discretionary income to shell for half assed bands, this is why I skip Dead Co and this is why I am not gonna pay out the nose for subpar bar band players (regardless of how brilliant the bass player and bandleader is), come on now.

if these shows were at TXR, theyd be $50 at most....so, Phil, how long are you going to let Shappy rip us off? either bring a better lineup, or lower the prices...

either way....one can still find tickets for less on days of shows...just gotta want it...but, no show (imo) is worth $150 plus

>> this is why I skip Dead Co and this is why I am not gonna pay out the nose for subpar bar band players

Dead Co prices for the most part make Phil look like a bargain though. $150 for mid-tier seat at MSG to watch Bob snooze vs. $65 to stand in front of Phil at Brooklyn Bowl. Not quite the same thing there

I have sworn to never pay money to see Ross James perform, and so far I have been able to keep my pledge.

One of the best things about seeing Phil was the ability to see A list players interpret this catalog.  Apparently those days are gone.

^^^^^

jackie Greene was A list in 07.....please...it's still a fun night out..paid a grand total of 100 beans for 3 shows..20 Asbury ..20 Camden ..60 Cap...didn't pay out the nose and had a blast..music Had its highs and lows..like any Phil band since the Q days...

Man, that looked and sounded like an incredibly fun night!  Love that most of them dressed up. Diggin' Phil's hat! And, or course RR killing the bunny suit.

Lots of REALLY solid jams!!

So bummed I had to miss this show. Everyone I know who was there had a ball with friends giggin' down to celebrating this wonderful music!!

Jackie Green never was, and never will be, an A list player.  Please.  He's a good entertainer and a competent guitarist, but he will never play a note that will surprise you and he will certainly never make your jaw drop in amazement.  The very idea that he is a top flight player shows just how far some people's expectations have fallen.

As I said, I'm sure it was a fun night out.  I want more than that at this point in my life, especially if I'm going to drive three hours each way and spend hundreds of dollars.  To each his own.

Any buzz about 2018 CAP birthday shows?

I like Ross James (his vocals on Sultans of Swing being a major exception -- some really F'n weird stresses and inflections).

And anyone who isn't digging the PHJB sit-ins needs help.

I don't like horns in GD music.  Sad.laugh

Nice hearing a line-up that can sing together, too.

Seconding this question

Good show up in here. This may have been the last Phil Cap run that I did more than 1x show. Although was PhilRad after this? If so, that would be it.

i believe philrad was 2014.

image_171.jpegimage_170.jpegAlpen Tourist Phil

The Karl Denson shows at the Cap threw down.. ..the midnight rider for Greg was killer...

the dates for the b-day shows r being held but Phil hasn't committed yet...according to peeps who work at the Cap..

damn, phil even plays the shitty sounding ritter w/ tfb? haha. fitting.

Nice Pics..

>> damn, phil even plays the shitty sounding ritter w/ tfb?

It's not the one from Furthur, newer one that sounds a lot better. Much thicker bottom end.

pretty sure tfb cant even play the opening to crazy fingers like how phil did in the link ^^^^

>>>so when was the last time phil actually threw down at the cap?

Sless/Warren were two very good ones...but the last great run at the Cap was a year later with the Q.  Jimmy elevated the music in a way that does not happen anymore.

Set 2: Mason’s Children > Mountain Jam > Mountains of the Moon > Night of 1000 Stars > Mountains of the Moon > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment, St. Stephen > In the Midnight Hour

Encore: Days Between

^^^^^

peeps bitched and moaned about the last Q run as well..lost the magic..not as good as it was..practice etc...while Phil's bands  change the one constant on  the zone, old or new, is it will always complain about something....same as it ever was..warren stains...Joan moan...ham and eggs..scofield doesn't know the GD..cat boy..da bus boys...most peeps at the cap have a blast and in the end that's all that matters ..keyboard critics will always be around..

SlessQ, The Q, and the Nelson lineup at the Cap were all great shows. No one should expect "bands" that don't have longevity like the 2000-2003 Q to sound that good.

yeah a lot of it comes down to personal preference and wanting the music to reach a certain level or style of transcendence. Most people have their own version of what makes that happen. The last Q run is one of the only shows from Phil in many years, that I can continually listen to the SBD of and not grow sick of. Even though it is sloppy at times It has the elements I enjoy.

>>>SlessQ, The Q, and the Nelson lineup at the Cap were all great shows.

I agree. I enjoyed them all.

I think it's pretty cool they played Monster Mash after a few months ago I claimed it was my 'first favorite song' that I could remember having as a kid. Maybe Phil saw the thread and read my post...probably not. Thank you Phil!

i thought those last two Q shows were super boring. i mean, jimmy crushed the other one, that's it.

the sless shows were colorful and jammed out w/o forcing anything. the Q forced everything those two nights.

still tho, blows away the family band. haha. that's just straight up trash phil is producing.

>>>jimmy crushed the other one, that's it.

Other One is just one highlight of that set.  Mason’s Children > Mountain Jam > Mountains of the Moon > Night of 1000 Stars > Mountains of the Moon is a delicious soup.   Point me in the direction of a better PLF Stephen in the last five years.

yes, the st stephen is tasty. i'd say that other one is the highlight of the run! jimmy's guitar sounded so cool, too bad he didn't melt it down like that the entire show.

here's a longer, better st stephen: https://www.archive.org/details/paf2013-07-23.flac16

Pretty cool and strange spacey outro jam. Interesting version but a bit plodding and not the same oomph as the more recent.

Tons of highlights for me. I thought it was awesome to hear Jimmy have a Cardinal-esque tone for Let it Ride.

i think we can agree that what we both are talking about has been missing from phil for a while now.

would love to see sless and jimmy w/ phil in the grate room (is that what's it's called? lol)

I agree on both...catch glimpses here and there.
