Phil Chicago 3-7-19

Forums:

Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band honored Chicago’s own Wilco on Friday night at the first of two shows at Thalia Hall in The Windy City. The Grateful Dead bassist and his band covered “Misunderstood” to end last night’s concert.

A trend seems to be developing as Phil and the group paid tribute to Nirvana during a recent tour stop in Seattle. Last night’s version of “Misunderstood” was led by guitarist Alex Koford who recently made a move from behind the drums to the band’s third guitarist along with Ross James and Grahame Lesh. Nathan Graham is now The Terrapin Family Band’s drummer.

Phil has a few connections to Wilco. Lesh joined forces with the group at the 1999 Mountain Aire Festival in Calaveras, California to harmonize with Jeff Tweedy on “Ripple” in a rare bass-less appearance. More recently, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline made a few cameos with Phil Lesh & Friends at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York in 2014.

I guess if that’s what you want to call it.

so they have three mediocre guitar players now. great.

It's been quite the rise for Alex Koford.

Dishwasher > drummer > guitarist. And who the fuck is Nathan Graham?? Guess I've been out of the loop with the Family Band.

Calling Ross James a mediocre guitarist is an insult to mediocre guitarists..  The only thing worse than his guitar playing is his vocals.  IMO, Phil playing with this band has spun him into entropy.

"a marketplace where entropy reigns supreme"

i had to look it up. I’m going to say it’s definition 2.

Hahaha can anyone map out Phil's connection to Nirvana and does anyone have a link to this band covering them?? Please

I've been saying for years that the way to get me to a Phil show would be this band

Phil, Cline and Jonathan Wilson on gtr, Kotche form Wilco on drums and Headband on Keys, TFB I've no interest in,

TFB sings friend of the devil's lyrics to Nirvana's song lithium's music.  Gimmicky at best.

>>>>>Gimmicky at best.

And that’s stretching.  It was pretty, pretty bad.

tweedy has poked fun at the dead and deadheads many times!  And if Phil wanted to do wilco there are so many better tunes than misunderstood. IMO.

Cline, Kotche and HB- YESSS

Family Bland no.

In college I rented an off-campus house w/ friends, and we named it Entropy House, based on definition #2, of course!

Thanks for that good flashback, LOL.

>>>>tweedy has poked fun at the dead and deadheads many times!

we are all one giant softball waiting to be smacked out of the park. I’ve done it quite often myself.

It has all become a bit of a dog and pony show at this point. I'm happy for the memories. The interest level has dropped to zero and I've seen quite a bit of this evolution since Grateful Dead went away. There has been a reverse learning curve for a number of years now. Maybe I'm old but DSO is the only band I check out anymore on this front and I find them to be very good at what they do. I go to other concerts now but not as often.

DSO is indeed the biggest bang for your entertainment $ these days........

Does Grahame Lesh consider himself a professional musician? Serious question...

I’m glad I saw the one Portland show last month.

no regrets.

also content with the idea that it was my last Phil show,

unless he happens to change his band...

As Phil's eased into semi-retirement, him and Jill have clearly chosen to play with musicians that they don't have to pay much money to. The fact that they're Grahame's friends is a bonus. I'm sure Phil's a little embarrassed deep down playing with a bunch of amateurs. But it's all about the extra cash and getting Grahame some publicity. I don't blame him for that either. He's given us a hell of a lot and doesn't owe us anything at this point.

Don't Ease, Don't Ease..
