Phil at the Crystal Ballroom

Forums:

Just one week until Phil returns to the storied Crystal Ballroom for two nights on the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead shows there in 1968.

Who all is going?

Who's in the band?  I haven't been keeping up...

Thanks Ken! Weird, I was just wondering when this thread would pop up.... D

  1. Portland Ken
  2. Llollo + Mr. Llollo and numerous Portland music friends
  3. Chinarider! (He's traveling right now but texted me just yesterday that he's flying in for this too... he's staying at our house!)

Nice -- that was a good game last night!

Hi Wngfan!

Ken & Wngfan > Just yesterday I booked a small room (18 capacity) at Cassidy's around the corner from 4pm - 6:30pm for SAT prefunc....only requirement for the room is that you order food w/ drink.... stop by if you can.

Cassidy's on Saturday night sounds great and we will plan on stopping by.

See all you freeks at the shows.

Excellent, Ken! Is Wendy from the Ninja Hippies crew going? Bring friends!

We will be at Friday shows too, but no set location for pre-show.

2. Llollo + Mr. Llollo and numerous Portland music friends

3. Chinarider! (He's traveling right now but texted me just yesterday that he's flying in for this too... he's staying at our house!)

4. Wngfan

5. Surfdead - Fri. w/ Mrs. Surfdead, Sat. solo unless someone from Corvallis area needs a ride.

Wish I had tickets (and could afford it), was out of town when they went on sale...    (and viva Corvallis!)

Hope you all enjoy bouncing round that room!

I've played the Crystal Ballroom a few times - what a blast with that spring loaded dance floor and some of the best artist hospitality I can remember!

>>>>what a blast with that spring loaded dance floor

Thing about that floor is it can get wonky out in the crowd when the bouncing gets out of time with the music.

Right next to Cassidy's. Around the corner from the Crystal. If you like large, cheap cocktails.

I got deleted.

Long distance fix from Dublin, nobody gets deleted :-)

I'm sorry Surfdead. My bad. I didn't mean to delete you.

Thank you for fixing my mistake, China-Rider.

No harm no foul.

I'm still going.

Very happy to see more names on the list!

Love the Scooters link! So fun to run in there at halftime shoulder-to-shoulder w/ fans.  It's next door to Cassidy's where we'll be on Saturday like I mentioned above.. stop by if convenient, we'll be in the banquet room.

The Portland Winter Light festival is happening all over town next week... check out this gallery here from last year... home page features locations. All free.

https://www.pdxwlf.com/gallery

If you need to take the MAX train downtown from the airport, check out this link for an overview: https://www.travelportland.com/article/portland-international-airport-pdx/

Best westbound Red Line stop closest to Crystal is the Galleria / SW 10th MAX Station, Stop ID 8384.  Download the app "PDX Bus" to see train + bus + streetcar network schedules and plan trips.

I'm happy to answer questions about other places to drink and eat too, just ask!

This is going to be so fun, I have a feeling these will be memorable Phil shows. Any rumors of special guests?   LLOLLO, thanks so much for the info and hospitality!

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

You're welcome!

Haven't heard of any rumors.

At the X show last month, no more re entry at the Crystal. Also, walk through metal detectors and everything out of your pockets at the door. I don't think this was just for X. So plan accordingly. Security at the Crystal is pretty no funny business about smoking anything. Drinks are pretty expensive by Oregon standards. Just a heads up!

>>>> no more entry at the Crystal.

Its been that way for a number of years so plan accordingly.   Used to be able to take a walk around the block at set break to puff, but no more.  The metal detectors went up last year after a shooting at the venue.  They have also cracked down on smoking in the venue, but people still do it.  Just keep it on the down low.  A vape pen is ideal, or better yet, load up on edibles before going in.

Miss the days of getting fresh air at setbreak.

Can *highly* recommend the edibles made locally by a company called Wyld.

There's a good store downtown on 1st Ave called Serra that stocks them... but call ahead as they are very popular among locals.

Here's a segment from a local news program about the Crystal's 104th birthday celebration this weekend... be patient and eventually they show the GD poster and mention Phil next weekend. Great shots of the interior, too.

http://www.kgw.com/video/entertainment/television/programs/live-at-7/happy-104th-birthday-to-the-crystal-ballroom/283-2895619

Thought I'd bump this, as it's coming right up. Is there anything happening Fri. pre-show? I will be driving up Fri. with Mrs. Surfdead amd Sat by myself. Room in the car both days if anyone from the Corvallis area needs a ride. Thinking about making some special brownies since it's difficult to partake at the Crystal.

I'm in Corvallis, just wish I had tickets

^ maybe you should ride with surf and take a chance of finding tickets at the show.

Agree, Chinarider. Tickets are starting to surface, especially on CashorTrade.org -- but w/ that site it's best to pay to be a Gold member...that way you get text alerts for the tickets you are seeking 10 minutes in advance of the seller's post going live.

Surfdead, I didn't organize a meetup for Friday, since we have to work almost a full day -- so it'll be a rush to get back home then back to the show.... we want to be on the rail first night... and it's a small rail!

hey all, check out Portland Craigslist or your local Craigslist for tickets !

https://portland.craigslist.org/search/tia?query=phil&sale_date=all+dates

Paging Noodler! Looks like I have access to an extra ticket for Saturday only... would you like it?

$88 face

My email is in my profile.

Could meet you at Cassidy’s between 4pm and 6:30pm on Saturday.

There''s also a ticket available for Friday night.
Any interest? Let me know, I'll connect you with the zoner who has it.

Ticket update for Noodler: sorry just heard from my friend that she already sold the SAT ticket... she was supposed to drop it off for me to sell since she has to leave town today... sorry!!!

Love Llo being the hostess of Portland heart

send pics and have so much fun!

give Gilman the bird for me:)

I'm in Portland now, decompressing with Mexican lunch at Mi Mero Mole.   Getting into Phil mode!

Thanks for the ticket help, you guys are the best...    I just don't think I can afford it this time around

(Broke my leg, lost my good job, been self employed since,  hasn't been working as good as I hoped)

I kept my spending down over the holidays, met my goals, so that $80 went for David Byrne tickets (have never seen him, kind of bucket list thing, vs the family band, but I would pay if Phil was with legends, or next level musicians)

Friday night ticket is gone to LLOLLO's friend.

Have fun, you phreaks!

No problem Noodler.... I'm envrious that you're going to David Byrne. Definitely a bucket list event!

Roshambo! Someday we will host you too! Why on earth does Gilman deserve the bird, haha?!

Gilman, do stop by Cassidy's on Saturday if you can... see info above...

Reuniting w/ China at 4:30, then meeting up w/ Mr. LLOLLO and out to dinner.

Look for photos later on.

Gotta do some work now so I can keep buying show tix!

Because it’s the Philzone salute!

Chinarider- you must have some jet lag?!

The owner of the restaurant where China-rider is eating was quoted in the local weekly about his favorite dead song.

Getting psyched for the weekend

http://www.wweek.com/culture/2018/01/31/in-honor-of-this-weeks-phil-lesh...

doh on me, Ro.

thanks for the link Wngfan.

Hi Ro, going to miss you not being at these shows.  Yeah 6 planes in the last week...don’t feel like I really know where I am.   People watching is very interesting in Portland.

Druba, as it turned out, I have an extra Friday ticket that was earmarked for a buddy of mine and just learned he can't make it.  If you want it and can make it up, it's yours.

If Druba doesn't want it or need it, I have a friend that was looking.

Ken - re. Crystal policies, do you think they will let me bring in some home-made edibles?

Can eat mine before going in, but wanted to give a few away.

I'm not going to be able to pull it off sadly, so pay it forward friends!

460x_1.jpg

Change of plans, my extra Friday is gone, but now have an extra Saturday.    Surf, they now have metal detectors, so unless you go off, they probably wouldn't do a pat down.  I don't think you could get away with a picnic basket, but depending on the size of your edibles, it should be ok (again, as long as you don't go off in the metal detector and get a follow up pat down/pocket emptying).

Right; just wondering if I can just bring them in openly - legal now and all.

Ken, if you don't find anyone, a friend of mine would likely want the Saturday ticket... email me off-thread, please.

He would meet us at Cassidy's.

Guys, don’t worry too much about the metal detector at the Crystal. Last time I went to a show there, I just stuck my pipe and weed canister in the little bowl with my phone and they didn’t say anything. The metal detector is there because someone shot off a gun during a hip hop show last summer, not to bust people with weed. Edibles should be no problem. Smoking should just be discreet as always since it is an indoor show and will be packed in like sardines.

"... Smoking should just be discreet as always since it is an indoor show and will be packed in like sardines..."

Way back when,  my buddy fainted there after a couple puffs of strong Herb.  He doesn't partake very often. We just sat him on a bench off to the side;  he was fine after a few minutes.  Maybe it was Jonathon Richman ?? I forget, we saw a bunch of shows there early 2000's.  Nowadays there would probably be EMT's and a stretcher.

Then again,  these days he has his four legal backyard Ganja plants,  but still hardly ever puffs.

Cassidy's was almost always the pre-show meetup spot.

Setlists from the original 1968 shows....

Grateful Dead
1968/2/2 - Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR

Viola Lee Blues, That's It for the Other One, Clementine, Good Morning School Girl, Dark Star

Grateful Dead
1968/2/3 - Crystal Ballroom, Portland, OR

That's It for the Other One, New Potato Caboose, It Hurts Me Too, Born Cross-Eyed, Good Morning School Girl, Dark Star, China Cat Sunflower, The Eleven

JellyRoll got the boot for smoking in there .

>>>>Smoking should just be discreet as always since it is an indoor show and will be packed in like sardines.

Packed like sardines is so true about sold out shows at the Crystal.  In addition to the ticket holders, various McMenamins employees and other friends of the band and venue seem to find their way in too.  Makes it way past capacity and the place can be a little rough with beer spilling all over and a thick haze of vaporized hippie sweat and pot smoke hanging over the room.

Smoking in the middle of the crowd might make you seem invincible but I had a friend standing in the midst of the crowd half way back from the stage get kicked out for puffing by yellow shirts who waded out to grab him.  When I protested, the yellow shirts said "And we saw you smoking too" and tried to grab me, but I squatted down and duck walked through the crowd to safety.  One of the few disadvantages of being tall is that you stick out when you are trying to puff herb at a concert.

At another show at the Crystal, by comparison, I turned around on the dance floor to pass around a joint and every single other person I saw was already puffing away with no problem.

Eric Krasno posted on FB that he is headed to Portland to play w/ Phil this weekend!

Saw the set list for the original shows, here's the music;

If anyone hears of a stream,  post it here ??

Thanks Noodler!

Yes,  Thanks Druba !!

I was not aware of the 'Relisten' project.  They've got a bunch of Ween on there as well.

It's so easy to navigate their system (vs archive), makes that important research that we do that much easier...

And a fellow zoner shared this a while back, so I'll pay it forward (regarding streams);

(sadly, don't see Phil on here right now)

I think I'm done with this band. I love Phil, but this version of his friends just isn't good. RMFJ takes any material and turns it into a generic pentatonic blues/hard rock wankfest. All subtlety and harmony is lost. His tone is crappy - luckily his guitar is sometimes hard to hear. Koford is sometimes inaudible and sometimes overbearing. He was totally lost on Scarlet - started on the wrong foot and never caught up. Crosby is usually solid, but I didn't like most of what he was playing last night, and he was sometime hard to hear. GL has improved on guitar, but as stated in previous posts above he's pretty flat emotionally.

I actually wish Krasno hadn't sat in. Although he was the best guitarist up there, he didn't seem to really know the material and didn't listen to or couldn't hear what the rest of the band was playing, so he mainly just soloed over anything that moved. I believe he may have been in the wrong key for the first part of BEW - a real train wreck IMO.

I forgot how bad the sound is at the Crystal. Couldn't find a sweet spot anywhere. Pretty sure they have the same PA they've had for 20 years Those two little strips of speakers and the amps that "power" them just aren't doing it. Vocals were weak all around unless everyone was singing together and not playing. Luckily RMFJ's "vocals" were mostly inaudible.

The only tunes I really dug from last night were CCat, Playing, and Gallilee. They get 3 stars; everything else gets 1 or 2. I had fun hanging with the folks, but I'm done unless Phil shows up with the Q or the equivalent thereof, in a better venue.

Twiddle. Lol.

Regarding "Crystal Ballroom" venue --

Attended some shows there around the 'Turn o' The Century'...

Once they cut that hole in the floor to appease the Bldng. Inspectors,  it ruined the Sound.

Old - Timers know what I'm saying.  Others will say " WTF DS,  watcha talkin' about ?? "

To explain,  they put some extra Stairs  in there,  destroying the stage - level floor Sound.

It was way back when.

Perhaps you had to be there,  before & after.

"One of the few disadvantages of being tall is that you stick out when you are trying to puff herb at a concert."

Not if you're smart enough to stoop down when you puff.

From Wiki:

In 2000 or 2001 a large 20'x20' square opening was cut into the center/middle edge of the main ballroom floor to make additional fire exits in order to sell more tickets for live music events. This is potentially the only hole of its kind in a "floating" dance floor still in existence in the United States.

During the early hours of April 14, 2014, the ballroom was evacuated during a show by Schoolboy Q due to a possible crack in a support beam.

Well I had a good time despite last night’s musical rough spots.

Safe travels to Chinarider... just dropped him off at the airport.

 Nice to see everyone again!

Who are the two in the middle of that pic?

Eric Krasno and Elliot Peck.

Good to see everyone and nice meeting and hanging with CR, who kept the IPAs flowing before the show.  Thanks.    I hear you Surf (thanks for the baked goods) and agree with everything you said as it relates to night one, but thought they finally got it dialed in last night - both sound and music.  If the first night was Phil with a mediocre bar band, the second night was an old school tent revival meeting.   Maybe it was a found a "sweet spot" perched on a bench right next to the soundboard.  Still, I miss Bob Weir's vocal power and projection on certain tunes.

That's not Krasno wearing the kneepads, must be twiddle dude.

I'm just hoping they bring some good special guests to the Cap for the Birthday run. TFB last fall with Barraco, Bluhm, Robert Randolph and the Preservation Hall guys was very enjoyable if a little flat at times.

I liked the Samson to end set one and the Terrapin last night. Had fun with my friends, but my wife (who is not as serious a fan as I am) pretty much though Graham Lesh voice sucked.

Would you all have gone if it had just been Phil playing solo? I might have.

But for me, cost and return are part of the decision making process and part of why I decided not to go to Portland. The most valuable part would probably have been seeing Zoners and old friends.

I would have gone if it was Phil solo, and the Box of Rain would have been better

You didn't go last night but might have if Phil played solo. Maybe not. Probably not.

I'm back home now...today is a recovery day.

What a great weekend!  As a Crystal Ballroom virgin I was surprised the show was on the upper floor.  It turned out to be very easy to get lost in stairways and tunnels on way to bathroom, where am I???  Thanks to Mr and Mrs LLOLLO for showing me around the local watering holes and hosting (((Portland)))  Great to meet Zoners...Ken, Surf, Moses, needed way more time to chat!

The "hole" in the floor is odd, the whole place is asymmetrical.  On Friday we were up on the rail, second night I searched for the sound and ended up near soundboard with Ken, I agree they got it more dialed in Saturday night.  That 2/3 setlist was sweet, Phil brings it!  I need to listen to these shows again  yes

These shows were great.  What a funky, tripped out place.  I loved it.

After the first show we went to Ringler's Annex and wandered into The Cellar Bar.  Holy fuck.  Talk about weird, especially with a head full.  Totally tripped out place.  I mean, "Holy fuck, what's going on here?"

The crowd the first night pretty much sucked.  Pushy, shovey neanderthals.  The second night we scored coveted seats in the balcony.  During the break, of the second night, we could see some weirdo doing push ups.  I lost interset at 243 and went to get a beer.  I have no idea if he got arroused.  No video exists.

Sumatra, I know you're reading this.  I think that gap in your teeth goes all the way to your brain.  Loser.
