One Year  Is 2006 ?

Got a link archive ? and comments on Phil 2006

i think trey and phil did a great Row Jimmy? that year i have a great recording !

????

Weren't there a couple bass duets with Gordon on the 06' tour?

who?

I saw a handful of shoes in '06. We did the FL, GA, and NC shows, which were all pretty solid. Started with Scofield, Dickey Betts sat in in Hotlanta, and the Duo opened for PLF in Ashville, and then played with Trey and Mike in Raleigh. Also drove out to KC for the Starlight show, which was a lot of fun.

Overall, not my favorite Phil tour; but there was some great music played, and some fun surprises.

Oh, yeah wasn't there an Elizabeth Reed with Dickey Betts that was pretty hot at that ATL show?

It was actually a pretty awkward affair, E.

Three sets. Dickey literally mad dogged Sco off the stage during his feature. No shit.

The Tower run in Feb was outstanding.

tower run was indeed outstanding.

the summer shows where trey didn't come out and barry got to melt down the entire two sets were the best that summer. some big jams.

>>>>Dickey literally mad dogged Sco off the stage during his feature

sco should probably consider himself lucky betts didn't come after him with a broken liquor bottle

I missed Barry's guitar in the summer, Phil relegated him to the pedal steel too much.

I spoke with Greg Osby about that tour, I was curious if he was free to come and go as he pleased or if Phil had told him when he wanted him on stage.  It was the latter, which surprised me a bit as there were times when Osby wasn't on stage and could really have added a lot.  Phil obviously had definite ideas of what he wanted to be happening on that tour.

The first night was better...

Osby added so little to that tour

I actually enjoyed Joan in that lineup. I thought she did a nice job with the vocals, and seemed to fit into that ensemble better than The Dead thing.

7/14/15/16/18/19 were stellar shows.

>>> Phil relegated him to the pedal steel too much.

pretty much entirely as I recall, I think he might have even been chained to the thing.

to his credit he made it work like a champ playing not really steel conducive tunes like shakedown st. and whatnot and actually getting decent results.

LOL 2006 for the win if you want to hear 3-5 Ryan Adams songs a night LOL

pass

Team Phil's approach to Barry was always strange to me ... like they were afraid he might take the spotlight.

Was at one show at the Nokia NYC where Barry sat in and just melted the room all night. That was great

After that, though he was never turned loose. They do not even show Sless close up on webcasts during his solos. Curious ....

Barry is an amazing pedal steel player.

One of the highlights for me from the '05 Fillmore>Red Rocks run with Ryan Adams was Barry's steel work on the Ripple encore. Really beautiful, soulful playing from him that night.

so how does that happen? Does Phil tell him before the show "hey you better not play so well tonight" or does he shoot him dirty looks when he starts playing a hot solo during the show?

Im curious because I've read that comment before that "so and so wasn't turned loose" and it always reads to me like OTHER people in the band are purposefully restricting how well that person plays.

Musicians of VLZ please chime in! Have you ever not been let loose by your band mates or have you ever had to sit someone down and tell them to cut the shit and stop playing so dang well?

I know from my band experience that personalities would prevent you form doing that kind of thing bucky. It usually happens organically. Like, shit, this guy is better on guitar, maybe I should play more rhythm. Or you break up.   But This is Phil and Friends, or the core 4 and friends.  Especially with Phil, what he says goes. From what Ive read, I can see him saying hey Barry, this band could use more of your fantastic pedal steel. i think Larry (or whomever) should take the lead roll for now.  But purely speculating.

I know Phil told Mattson to "play an eighth less notes" in 99.  So Phil does make the musicians think about what they're doing more than just show up and play.
