Phil Lesh Announces Focus For 2017 At Terrapin Crossroads

Is this the trimmed version or full version?

At age 76 bassist Phil Lesh played more shows in 2016 than he did during some years of the Grateful Dead’s hey day. Lesh accomplished this by building his own venue five years ago, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, which allows him to perform surprise shows, outdoor festival-like events and sit-in with a variety of bands whenever he feels like it. A recent announcement from the Bay Area venue lays out Phil’s focus for 2017.

Next year will be the 40th anniversary of one of the Grateful Dead’s most acclaimed years, 1977. Not only did the group throw down in the live setting at most tour stops, but they also released the beloved Terrapin Station album. Also note that Phil will turn 77 in 2017. As such Lesh has enlisted the Terrapin Family Band for a look back at a classic year in Grateful Dead history and additionally has his eye on the future.

The announcement from Terrapin Crossroads reveals Phil and The Terrapin Family Band of Ross James, Grahame Lesh and Alex Koford have been “studying the music, working on interpretations, building musical bonds and writing new songs – coming from a special place, in a special place.” Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band, along with many special guests, are expected to perform regularly at Crossroads in 2017. Look for the group to re-create Grateful Dead shows from 1977 leading up to a performance of the Terrapin Station album at Lockn’ in August. We’re also particularly interested to see what the new material the ensemble is working on is all about.

It all begins on Wednesday, January 25 with a show dubbed “Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band Play 1977” at Terrapin Crossroads. Tickets are on sale now via the venue’s website.

Does this gimmicky stuff really appeal to Deadheads? Are people that gullible? That's some lineup for $77.00.

Starting to become less appealing for sure.
(based solely on the lineup).

San Rafael, CA’s Terrapin Crossroads is hosting a Christmas Eve celebration this year, with food, drinks and music from venue proprietor Phil Lesh.

On December 24, TXR will have brunch and dinner, with live music all throughout the day. Lesh will play for a happy hour afternoon set when Santa makes an appearance.

More information on Terrapin Crossroads events is available here.

I wish he would announce the lineups and just play music.

Just play. No previous shows. Just get up there and play what you want when in the moment!

It doesn't matter what I think anyway. Just tossing in my 2 cents.

Nice!!! Long live Phil!!!

>>>> Does this gimmicky stuff really appeal to Deadheads? Are people that gullible? That's some lineup for $77.00.

It sold out pretty quickly....while the same lineup + Dickinson Bros = $49.00; tickets have been on sale for several days and they are still available.

Go figure.

Still lots of chances to see Phil for free.  Next one is tomorrow night (would love to check that one out).

While I'm not necessarily a fan of the Dickinson Bros, the pricing does seem to be out of whack. Phil must raking in the profit with these year shows. Good for him for starting a business in a location that will support him playing at this price with the fam band. Pretty shrewd investment after deciding not to tour anymore while still wanting to play gd music.

Played more shows in 2016>>>>

too bad the one I saw put me to sleep.

Is it fair to say Phil has moved completely into creative and artistic bankruptcy at this point?

2017 will be 40 years since I started attending Grateful Dead concerts.

Apparently so...

I'm sure I'll be seeing plenty of Phil, as usual, next year, but $77 for another '77 show - with Family Band - was not going to be happening for me at this point. If not for the mention of '77 and hints at special guests (sprinkled throughout the year), I can't imagine this show would be sold out in less than a day.

I'm more curious what long, wild set of shows Phil & Co. will be planning for the fifth anniversary. I'll save my money for one (or more) of those. I imagine they'll be some good music(named before the fact) for those.

Oh, speaking of gimmicks, never heard anything about the "Evening with the Dead" with that psychic medium last week. Anyone go? Was there any interesting communications with those from beyond?

Alls well that Phils well.

>>>Is it fair to say Phil has moved completely into creative and artistic bankruptcy at this point<<<

It's fair to say, especially from a distance, but if you've been at most any of the shows lately, or even if you have just been really paying attention you'd know that was seriously incorrect.

For almost five years now the shows (at least at TxR) have consistently been really good, usually damn good. That's my opinion, and that's the opinion of almost everyone who has been at those shows.

I have no reason to think that won't continue.

But what do we know? We're just the ones who are there.

>>>Just get up there and play what you want when in the moment<<<

When the lights go down that's exactly what happens, every time I've been there, no matter what the "theme".

Phil is one of the greatest of all time.

Proven. Fact.

It's slightly amazing to me how many doubt him now.

But I guess it shouldn't.

I'm not a betting man, but I'm betting these upcoming shows will be really good.

As usual.

Peeps have short memories on da zone...it's hilarious...artistic bankruptcy cause of a couple of family band shows...hilarious...go to a show and put da keyboard down...

Karl Denson...Joe Russo...Warren Haynes...Larry Campbell...Jimmy Herring..Mike Gordon...Barry Sless...Stanley Jordon...John Molo...etc...all in 2016 ...

Does this gimmicky stuff really appeal to Deadheads?

Was there such a thing as fare Thee Well? Is there such a thing as Dead & Co.? Is there such a thing as Los Muertos Con Queso?

people will buy anything phil, especially out at txr. all good.

the music has suffered immensely-it is quite obvious and that is why these discussions come up so often.

if you dig it, cool. but phil has been mailing it in for a while now, both coasts.

When there's a Phil there's a way.

Phil is still playing!

That alone is amazing

I think Phil is playing at the level that is in alignment with his current state of consciousness. Whether that meets your expectations is your problem.

people will buy anything phil, especially out at txr<Very true, but you easties will chomp at the bit for Dead & Co.

It's not like we didn't see this coming.

We just didn't think he'd start ramping up his savings so early but not hiring A plus line ups any more & just pay the mediocre players such as Slaw, gubberman, Lebowitz. Besides those three wouldn't be doing nearly as good as they are now w/o TXR and the Marin $$

A line up like this needs to be adressed:

Scofield, Frisell, Medeski, Bobby Previte, Phil & what the hell throw Elliot Peck in there too. She's the best part of MN!

How often do you listen to Scofield or Frisell?

I've been listening to them both way before Phil ever brought either one of them around.

Not to mention, During the 50 some odd times I've seen MMW on the east coast back in the mid 90's they've introduced me to countless other progressive jazz musicians you've never even heard of.

I know more than you think I may do slackass:)

That's awesome. We need more progressive avant-garde music heads like yourself. It'll be like Ateix is still with us.

damn. MMW!

wish they'd tour again. they used to tour so hard.

one of the most psychedelic shows i've seen was MMW at e-factory like 2003.

wicked dance party.

$77 for awesome time at TXR w 350 cool phriends and excellent sound.....

or $500 for Dead & co. W Mayernaise,  thousands of custies, and alot of BS:  hmmmmmm- tough choice.

Slackass, at least I live outside a bubble.

Have a nice day of copy and pasting other zoners quotes and snide small responses.

* Take your kid to the park or something constructive.

I need to ask the zone what to feed him first.

This announcement just makes me even more apt to catch the few shows this year that r, shall we say, out of focus!

>too bad the one I saw put me to sleep

So that was you I had to wake up to get into the aisle every time I went to get a beer at the last Cap run.

More Herring! I want Herring & Sless together with Chimenti or Crosby & Molo. Herring & Chimenti seemed to hit it off nicely in those 'Almost Q' shows from a few years ago.
