8/17 Watkins Glen International Raceway, Watkins Glen, NY
8/18 Watkins Glen International Raceway, Watkins Glen, NY
8/19 Watkins Glen International Raceway, Watkins Glen, NY
It's definitely happening, I don't think I can swing it this year, but if it's an option definitely DO IT!!!
I was at the 3 show Gorge Run back in '13 and while I loved the shows and being in the venue - getting inside and then back to our vehicle was beyond stupid.
It took more than an hour to walk from my car parked on a massive sloping lot North of the venue to actually being inside the place 3 days in a row and generally speaking more than an hour to get back.
It takes less time to get to my car in the back lot at Shoreline gig and drive all the way home to my house in the middle of SF then it did to get out of the Gorge Amphitheater and get to my car. STUPID.
I stayed at the nearby Wild Horse campground the last three or so times I have been up to the Gorge. Its a chill retreat from dust and chaos of the Mad Max world of the main lot. Plus, there is regular complimentary party bus shuttles to and from the main gate which sure beats that slog to and from the main lot. Will be staying at Wild Horse again for this run.
Hmmm… A few days after my 45th….
HL, If I do go I'll bring a bunch of cases from my local - NEBCO -and we'll enjoy. Even if I don't go, I'll still have the wife bring up something for your crew.
I had a blast at the last Phish Fest, its the only thing I would consider this year unfortunately. Still not sure if I will do it with the family or not...
Hey Ro - Although I'll be in Colorado for a couple weeks during July, I'm staying east for Phish and am planning to do Alpharetta and the yet to be announced Watkins Glen.
That was a pretty cold blast and happy to report that we have had a couple of warm spells since then, including this weekend in the 40's and last weekend in the high 50's! What's bringing you back to the city in February?
Did anyone who put in for the ticket lottery have their account charged yet? I put in for a three night pass at the Gorge and haven't seen or heard anything, although the lottery closed yesterday morning.
I did manage to snag a coveted Wild Horse camping spot, although my buddy got shut out after he attempted to reserve a spot just a few hours after they went on sale. Thanks.
Damn. Sorry to hear about people getting shut down for Bill Graham. I guess that is the difference between a 8,500 capacity venue in the heart of a major city vs. a 30,000 person venue out in the wilds of Central Washington.
>>>>Watkins Glen is my plan. Is that happening? Will tickets be hard to get? I have no clue. I'm being recruited by grade school friends. Sounds fun.
It's pretty much the worst kept festival secret at this point. Glen Close tickets will be snapped up immediately but general camping should be available with no problem as long as you don't wait too long. It sold out last time for Magnaball but there were still non advertised tickets to be had at the gate. Go with your grade school friends - The Phish people know how to throw a great campout!
I've never seen a show at the Gorge and it's been on my bucket list for a long time. I love the neature.
I'm also totally indecisive and thought "if I get tix in the lotto, I'll go, if not, I will not".
I got the three day dealio for the Phish at the Gorge! Of course, I didn't realize it conflicted with Jerry Jam. That's why I won, b/c of the conflict.
Any advice for a new-bee at the Gorge? Camping scene, traveling from SEA TAC, etc.?
Anyone else going? Phish at the Gorge vs. Jerry Jam with my besties?!
Haven't been back since Phil/Dylan played the Gorge in 2000 but did see the Phish there from 97-99. But then again I was living up in SEA back then
Its a must see venue and a three night run with the Phish is a must do (albeit exhausting).
We used to stay in a nearby town called Quincy. Imagine the rooms there are probably a bit more expensive now. Super nice to have a bed, A/C and a motel pool though. Have fun!
BTW, who's got my extra Tahoe tix!!! Good luck tomorrow all.
Thing about tenting it at George Gorge: when you wake up in the morning in your tent, and it's a bit too warm to sleep in, that's as cool as it's going to get for the rest of the day. No trees there to deflect sunlight. So extra shade structures, RV with A/C, or the nearby motel are different levels of keeping Cool.
Also, it's FAR AWAY from everything. Long drive from 'civilization' so stock up on groceries and everything before you head out. You'll want an (extra) extra large cooler full of frozen water bottles, which can serve as replacement coolant for the main cooler(s) and then you can drink them.
Portland Ken has the right idea about Wild Horse campground. Anyway, there are lots of nice swimming / wading spots all around. It's the mighty Columbia River !
Stu's observations are accurate. The Gorge is out in serious BFE.
As for choosing between Phish at the Gorge and the "Jerry Jam," haven't been to the latter but Gorge shows are epic. Also, the PNW in the summertime is pretty nice as a stand alone experience. If you do come out, make sure you set aside some days on both ends to do some exploring. While the Gorge is about a two hour drive east of Seattle on I-90, you might want to consider back roads like either Route 2 across Stevens Pass to the north or Highway 12 across White Pass to the south and spend a night or two camped up in the woods. The cool mountain lakes and streams, glacier topped peaks, and deep woods will be a welcome contrast to the dust and heat of the Gorge on the dry side of the Cascades.
I am thinking of taking a day trip to Leavenworth, WA, which is a full blown mock Bavarian village about an hour northwest of the Gorge. Cheezy but fun.
It took around 30 minutes but I finally got the 3 night lawn package for Alpharetta which is all I wanted in the first place, so happy camper here and looking forward to adding that to the summer travels.. Buying tickets online on ther release date has become an absolute shit show!
