Phones Listening To You

Forums:

Old news, I know, but it's still good to remind ourselves that our phones are listening to your conversations.   Just happened again.

I was making dinner and my partner mentioned that our friend in South Korea went to Guns n Roses last night.  I was like "where" and took out my phone to look up what city/venue they were playing and as soon as I clicked on the Chrome browser, a story popped up right there about GnR kicking off their world tour in Korea (they played Inchon).  Didn't type in anything.  I am used to seeing stories about Phish or Billy Strings pop up without prompting because my browser history is full of searches related to those artists, but rarely, if ever, search for things related to GnR.

I used to say why worry, they are only trying to sell you crap by listening in, but with that fucktard Musk tapping into the nation's most sensitive computer systems, the rise of AI, and the loss of civil liberties, it's something to think about a little more.

Anyway to block that feature?   I have an Android.   Thanks.

If you use Google Assistant, which is always listening, you can disable that.

You can also disable your microphone, but you'll lose a lot of functionality, like voice-to-text and voice calls.

Here's some guidance from a trusted source: https://nordvpn.com/blog/is-my-phone-listening-to-me/

Cannot wait to be done with this Google phone

That said, they surely all do that anymore

You say something aloud, via text, etc and next thing you know fb or innerweb is telling you more about or trying to sell it to you

Another option is getting a truly secure phone, like the Librem 5:

Follow these steps to disable Siri on iOS:

1.Go to “Settings” and tap “Siri.”

2.Tap “Talk to Siri.”

3.Tap “Off” and make sure that the toggle for “Press side button for Siri” is off.

Follow these steps to disable Google Assistant on Android:

1.Open the Google app.

2.Tap your profile image in the top-right corner.

3.Tap “Settings.”

4.Tap “Google assistant.”

5.Tap “General.”

6.Toggle off “Google assistant.”

7.Tap “Turn off.”

The government has already been watching you through reverse tv broadcasting for decades now...

5+ years on current phone.  Haven't talked to Siri yet

A couple of weeks ago I was describing how the audience at a show I was at was getting angry with a musician (Sam Grisman)  who was likewise berating the crowd.

Out of nowhere I got TEMU ads for a "rage cage" -- that's what it was called -- that a band can put in front of the stage as a protective barrier.  Or it could have been a lacrosse goal... I didn't bother to look.
