Are there any local companies
Are there any local companies near you that offer internet? That's what we use. I'm sure they partner with one of the big providers - don't even know which one - ; but the advantage is, you don't have to talk with an anonymous/foreign/uncaring/incompetent customer "service" rep. Instead, you talk to someone who lives nearby and actually wants your business.

Century Link works fine for me. As they're headquarters is now in Monroe, Louisiana, maybe they would be a good fit for you Jazfish, as you are also in the Pelican State.

Not sure if it is available in your location but I've been extremely pleased with Verizon FIOS since it first became available. If I've been down for 6 hours total for the past 5 + years, I would be surprised.
