I found an old video file on a portable hard drive yesterday that I apparently never uploaded to my youtube channel, and it doesn't look like there are any other copies out there either. Enjoy.

Nice!

WOW thanks! I tried to travel to that one but the trip plans fell apart.
Have always wanted to go to a Christmas Jam.

I'm glad folks are enjoying this find. I found some other Phil stuff that I'll be uploading this weekend too. A couple of runs from Las Vegas, one with John Scofield and another with Stanley Jordan, I think.

Quarantine treats... this is making the weekend music prospects so much better than my local GD hour on KBOO-FM.

Thanks! I made a solo trip to this my first Xmas Jam for my 50th birthday.

2 day event that year, loved Asheville, Cabinet played a few daytime sets.

Only time I saw Col Bruce and the Aquarium Rescue Unit.

Met Scofield out on the town looking for a lunch spot.

Good times....

Hi LLOLLO

Lovely MOTM

Thanks for the early Christmas present, Mike.

Goes right nice with a pot of chili I been making while I listen.

Voodoo!!! Longtime no fest-with-ya! ;)

This is awesome, thanks so much for putting it out there.

Killer!  Thank you!  SOTR!

Got questions:

1) Please tell me about Phil's bass w/ the dragon on the neck -- and the neck looks longer than his other basses, am I correct?

2) Please tell me about the Celebration opener, not familiar with it...

3) Voodoo -- where were you in that theater? looks larger than the CAP...

Anyhow, really enjoying having this be this evening's entertainment, thanks again!

6 string bass called cora built by Jens Ritter Instruments for Phil Lesh in 2011

https://ritter-instruments.com/instrument.php?id=1119

Phil's bass is a Ritter; the model name is Cora:

Celebration is an original Q tune with lyrics by Robert Hunter and music by Phil. It appeared on the album There and Back Again.

Edit: Beat me to it, Bss.

Cool! Thanks so much!

Has Phil played that bass very often? Only w/ Q?

I think he played the Ritter for a year or so before he got his new Alembic.

hmmm, interesting.... now I want to know why he likes the Alembic more than the Ritter.

thank you so much

Wow!  Big thanks for posting .....

LLOLLO, I think the Alembic might have been lighter than the RItter, but I'm not an expert on these things.

lol. FOM, you got out a little ahead of me; I'm guessing you're a subscriber.

It seems the show I thought was with Stanley Jordan was actually two shows with the Q. Here's the first one; I'll upload the niext night (March 18, 2016) tonight.

>>>>now I want to know why he likes the Alembic more than the Ritter.

it sounds better

>>>Has Phil played that bass very often? Only w/ Q

jeez I forgot all about the dragon Ritter.

I feel like it was pretty short lived as I can't recall him using it on any tours; anyone remember a time frame where it was utilized heavily in the early days of txr?

it seems to sound better than 'the eye of Horus' first Ritter monstrosity he was using for the first couple furthur tours and whatever plf shows were happening right before furthur formed.

that bass was dedicated to the smithsonian, if u can believe that.

I feel like after that he got a new smaller modulus, that never sounded as a good as that larger body, neck thru modulus he used from circa 98-07', which was the definitive Phil and friends bass.

guess after that it was back to Ritter for a minute (enter/return of the dragon?)

I want to say he then went back to that newer modulus and then finally the custom alembic of today, which I must admit, while I'm still partial to the older, larger bodied modulus sound he got in the early to mid 2000's, is really ideal for his current style and the acoustics of the grate room.

my timeline recap May b slightly off, dude has changed gear more times than shoes throughout his career and the scene has always been too high to completely accurately keep record.

>>>the Alembic might have been lighter than the RItter,

highly doubt it, if anything, I'd guess the opposite.

either way, I also doubt weight is or has been much of a factor with Phil's instrument choices.

I've heard people conjecture about this over the years but I can assure u, at least in terms of the moduluses, they r very light instruments.

don't worry about the poor old man and his heavy axes, he's fine and as jimmy herring once noted, practically an Olympic level stander for his age and weight class

thank u for coming to my TED talk

^^^ fascinating, thanks!

^This is why I love the zone. Good to see you, E, and lol @ the TED talk.

That's it for the Q videos I found. I'll be posting P&F with John Scofield, Stu Allen, Jackie Greene, John Medeski, and Joe Russo at the BBLV in April 2014 over the coming week.

THX Mike !! The 3/18/16 Sounds Especially NICE !

PLQ = What A Band !

Phil was back on the Modulus by Spring 2010. I seem to remember him playing it in Portland in March, and definitely at Furthurfest in May. He had the Ritter with The Dead at The Gorge in 2009 and it seemed very muddy in the mix. I think it was one of the reasons many heads were underwhelmed by that whole tour.

That and Warren's lack of Fake Jerry credentials, as I recall. I liked the two shows I caught, even if the lots were full of trash. Garbage, too.

Saw a security/wook chase scene fit for a low-budget movie.

Mike.  Thanks a ton for publishing these.   I loved this band and enjoy seeing/hearing high quality videos.  Thanks!

While not the Q, digging the BBLV 4/18/14 show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgJbKKhQtH8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCH0lAObGnc

(have been charging myself money to drink water to recreate the ambiance)

That was a fun run, FOM, and I do remember folks not being happy about there being no free water. I believe they changed that policy right after these shows.

And speaking of these shows, I have the next night to upload, but I've gotten a bit behind with end of semester and holiday stuff. Maybe tonight.

Thanks for posting.  It's a bit of a blur, but do remember liking the shows / lineup.  Looking back at my photos and video clips and I could only find 4/19 and 20, but I often just don't take any shots ... and normally wouldn't skip a day.

It seemed like they locked in pretty quick for the second set on the 4/18 show.

They were locked in pretty good for the Fire on the Mountain in the first set too. They melted my face a few times in that one.

Yeah, thought so too re: FOTM!

I'm not always a big fan of three guitars, but I think it worked really well when they hit their stride; likewise, I think it was an interesting mix on guitar.  I've generally like Jackie Greene, but have found him to be hit or miss for lineups.  On this occasion, I think he brought something unique to the table that helped drive the ensemble - in particular on guitar.  Medeski made things interesting too.

I hear what you're saying about the number of guitars, and agree that three guitars really seemed to work for this line-up. I think the reason for that is the very different tones/voices that Scofield, Greene, and Allen brought to the mix.

And yeah, Medeski made things really interesting, and again, that's because of the number tones he had available, and the way he shifted tempos was really face melting too.

Yes, it was a cool mix of different tones / voices that each brought to the mix on guitar ... Likewise, I think they were all cognizant of not stepping on one another's toes and there was always at least one who was willing to play harmonically or more "tangentially" when not out in front on melody.

Yeah, I really liked Medeski's use of clav ... which doesn't necessarily find itself into the GD catalog as much as say Phish, SCI, or WSP

Thanks again for posting these ... currently in the midst of 4/19 set 2 (and noticed Jackie jumping on keys with Medeski during wharf rat ... each with a different tone).

I think 4/19 might have been the big stage debut for RMFJ.

RMFJ?

Edit:  is this a person and not a song?

^ Ross MF James

Def. not a song. smiley

Yeah, kind of put 2 and 2 together after making the post.

Still haven't made it to the end of set 2 (stopped shortly thereafter yesterday) and didn't see him, but was curious from the get-go (of seeing these vids) if Graham was on stage ... and was kind of surprised he wasn't.   My memory isn't very good on this front, but do vividly recall him playing the entire time (or nearly) with the full band ... then with the family band doing a closing afternoon show on the final day ... maybe two years (or more) in a row.  It was actually pretty cool to be able to hit the road and make the 9.5 hour drive back home to sleep in my own bed that night.

Here are links to the 4/19/14 shows:

I kind of remember Graham playing a matinee show with the Family Band (I didn't attend it), maybe during the early 2016 run with Stanley Jordan and John K?

Yep, it was 2016 ... but swore there were two years they did this & not sure if they played vegas in 2015?
