Saw a few great shows on that tour. New Haven, Worcester and Cornell. Some killer Dylan at the top of their NET game. Oh and the Zone...that tour brought me here
That was really a sweet time, getting our music & culture back in a way we hadn't imagined.
I saw the Augusta, ME show, and then the tour closing show in Amherst, MA
Derek had other obligations for the last couple of shows on the tour. After all, we was the Warren-recommended emergency fill in when Kimock left DURING the tour.
It was cool to have Jorma bring a different flavor for the Amherst show. Also the only show where Phil & Dylan's bands cross-pollinated a little bit.
Cam, I felt some of the same way when Phil started putting out those clubhouse shows not long ago. He just kept that flame of the GD and their music burning as long as he drew breath
I was at The Breslin Center for this line up. It was my first Warren experience and I have been hooked since. The Low Spark hooked me right away. I had no idea who he was at the time as I was living in The Philippines.
This was the best I have ever seen Dylan live. Larry Campbell was ripping (I think it was Larry Campbell). Bob sounded absolutely great as opposed to the last 10 or 15 years.
Headband which at the time kinda cracked me up until they started playing as I knew of him from the Volunteers and then Zen Tricksters and was surprised he cracked Phil's line up. Derek is pretty young too not much over 21. .
1999 ... there were no simulcasts or pay per views. If you were lucky a friend would hold a banana sized cell phone in the air at a show.
Just my thing... Ratdog never did it for me. Glad to see some shows, but it felt like weak tea.
BUT those 4/15 - 17 Warfield shows with Phil, Trey & Paige were such a big deal. It took 2-3 weeks to get 45 minutes of 4/15 on a cassette. Then 3 days later - got Maxell tapes of that incredible 4/16 show! It was pure adrenaline! Listened to 4/16 straight through twice.
Phil had brought that invisible IT that was the Grateful Dead back from Jerry's grave and it was fucking hot! It was actually a year or so before I heard the full 4/15.
Then ... this tour was announced. The Touch of Grey crowd had moved on and the Phishies were soaring, so it seemed to me that the vibe around this tour was 1970-ish ... just folks plugged in and under the radar. Other folks may have perceived it differently.
Grabbing some of that joy - think of Snoopy's feet flap dancing with his snout to the sky and arms spread wide - by dropping in to these 1999 shoes.
I didn't even know Kang and Kimock played together in Phil and Friends. Loving these links, thanks. Moved to Bouder in 2001 so missed these Red Rocks shows by a couple years, but caught those 5 night runs in 2003 and 2004 with The Dead. Really loved the 2003 run especially with Joan on many of the lead vocals.
