It's really odd to me why Another Planet has gone to full reserved seating including the pit/lower bowl for all shows at the Greek.
I guess it's so they can charge premium prices for the best seats, and it definitely must help with crowd control in one of the most notorious "oversold" venues anywhere, but at least for me it loses something aesthetically.
No spot taken, as ticket prices are high and the band has always underwhelmed me, but I'm sure it will be a good time for those who go.
It's really odd to me why Another Planet has gone to full reserved seating including the pit/lower bowl for all shows at the Greek.
I understand it. GA shows are too much "work" and many of the shows they host attract an older crowd. The lines for GA shows get out of control in length. I enjoy DSO but wasn't going to go if it was GA because I am tool old to stand in line all day to get a decent spot. YMMV. But IMO, the math on that decision in pretty easy. 25 years ago I would agree with you, but no more.
Well Woz, there's two types of math involved here; patron math, which you're using and focuses on what's best/easier for the patron, and promoter math, which rarely if ever includes the consideration or use of patron math. That being said, APE is about as user-friendly as major promoters get, yet I seriously doubt they made their decision based on what's best for the fans.
Even with APE's exclusive lease the university still maintains a lot of control over their venues, and this may involve them reacting to patron complaints, or more likely issues with the fire marshal, although for 50+ years the over-packed isles have never been an issue before (perhaps the graft became too expensive???). It's also possible that a lawsuit came their way, which is often what forces venue operators to make changes.
Of course the people who love the reserved model the most are the scalpers, as they can inhale most of the best seats and gouge that "older crowd" heavily, as apposed to the GA model which gives every ticket holder the same chance at the best seats, paying not with the almighty dollar but with time.
Ultimately, other than availability and significantly higher cost for the better spots it's not that big a deal, and it definitely makes the place more user friendly, especially for us old-timers, but I've always liked the "festival seating" GA model for rock concerts - tickets all the same price and everyone has an equal shot at the best spots.
I guess that makes me a rock 'n roll libtard socialist.
Quit complaining.. it's only $700 to sit within 20 yards of three, count em three Fake Jerrys. It's for charity. The only other place you could do that is the Steal Your Face festival and that's long gone. Plus you get watch the universe implode.
For the pleasure of those that can't decide between Jerry and Bob, of course Phil's Chair will be playing a free show in the parking lot of the former Crossroads.
Their Jerry guy is going to Jerry Day instead so they will be recreating a 74 SeasStones show with a Fake Ned Lagin.
I haven't paid much attention to these shows, who's the third FJ? Obviously Mattson will be there and I know Kadlecik will be risking his life at one of the shows, am I missing someone?
>>>Phil's Chair will be playing a free show in the parking lot of the former Crossroads<<<
I'm putting my fake tie-dye hoodie down for that right now!
Mike don't be dismayed but I heard DSO is auditioning Fake Steve Parishes for the Greek shows. To emulate pre-95 mean Steve -- not the 21st century sweet-as-a-kitten radio Steve. Do not under any curcumstances strip off your clothes, rush the stage, and try to hug Rob Baracco.

My point was that APE may have figured a reserved show will sell out easier than a festival seating show for older crowds. Maybe I am wrong. If DSO was GA, I wouldn't attend - and I know I am not alone. Call me "old" I am.
I would agree that UC doesn't like the endless lines that form early in the day for a GA show. They may not like that look. That said I know Sturgill Simpson is a GA show and coincidentally one that will attract ann average age that's half of the DSO crowd.
Rob Eaton made a bold move by hiring this notorious phoney pharmacist as DSO's Fake Owsley -- but unfortunately he spent all his time (and loads of band money) concocting "a good brown acid." He had to go.
^ Yep -- DSO is not afraid of hiring celebrities. They need something to separate them from the other tribute acts and they can afford it. In fact, Denzel Washington is slated to be the greeter at the Greek -- playing the part of the infamous Mr Clyde Williams.... aka he's gonna be Fake Willie. "Have your ticket out and ready." I miss that guy.
Good points Woz. They may actually be thinking about the age of the audience, which is a level of thinking that I don't expect from promoters, especially in this corporate era, but the people who run APE are not just empty suits with marketing degrees so you may be right.
Now if they could come up with a good fake Bill Graham those shows might really be something. I heard they're considering this guy.....
saw DSO in Paris in a lil theatre, place was literally 1/2 empty, they had like the first floor section stage to board at like 109 Euros, side and balcony seats were like 59 Euros, bought side seats and ended up going to an empty 2cnd row no hassles, Danced and had a great time, Andy from Tahoe was there too. Andy you alright man?
