Question for New Yorkers

Forums:

The wife and I are thinking of doing Christmas in NYC. Far off, I know, but never too soon to investigate.

Suggestions?

LA

I live in New York and know nothing of Christmas in NYC.  :-)

NYC XMAS PHISH MSG NYE

As a native NYer, I cannot think of any place, I would less want to be than dodging tourists at the Rock Center Christmas Tree or anywhere near Manhattan over the holidays. Maybe that's just me, been there, done that. Times Square on New Years Eve, not on a bet. Stay home with family and loved ones and enjoy the holiday cozy with a nice fire place and good friends.

Thanks for your candor, Howard. Unfortunately, the choice may be made by my wife. I'd rather hit Strings and Sol again this year if I had my druthers.

Howard is wise.

Baltimore is about 2 hours.  Philly 1.5

Obviously a ton of museums in NYC.

have fun!

NYC kinda' slows down Xmas eve, and few days after until the NYE thing ramps up....we've stayed over Xmas weekend and had a reasonably easy time getting around and having fun...late night comedy shows, Broadway shows, good music....

Baltimore is about 200 miles from NYC, so plan on 4+ hours if you drive. Train is less stress and fares can be reasonable if you buy well in advance. If you do drive and want to avoid I95, you can "go sideways" west thru PA to Harrisburg and then down I83, right into downtown Balto.

If you want to feel what it's like to climb inside of a Christmas Tree - I suggest a visit to Rolf's at the corner of 22nd St. and 3rd Ave. in Gramercy Park

You can have some fun for about a 1/2 day on Fifth Ave looking at windows.  However, isn;t the Trump Tower clusterfuck right in the middle of that?  If it snows, Central Park can be pretty sweet. Agree with Cathedral of St John the Divine, and you can probably catch some great choral and organ music at churches around town if you are into that sort of thing (I am).  Depending on weather and the number of times you have been to NYC, just walking around gawking at the old buildings and bridges is nice.  You cannot go wrong with the Met and MOMA.  In fact, it is your duty as an American to go to them.  On separate days so as not to have museum fatigue.Depending on the exhibits you may want to visit other museums as well. Museum of Moving Image can get you lost for a day. Book stores, do you read books?  They have real book stores.  Eat Chinese on Xmas day. Get the fuck out before NYE.

Smoke a joint at the "Top of the Rock" {NBC building} and view NYC from 360 perspective on a clear night with the stars gleaming. Go to the X-MAS show down below at Radio City.

Paul Winter does Solstice shows at the St. John Cathedral, but I think the dates are the week before Xmas. Definitely a Crazy huge building with great acoustics.

I was a Choirboy and performed there ages ago. Had to be right in front of all these choirs, like first in line, strolling down the mile-long middle lane singing whatever hymn for the Queen. It was definitely a stage-fright scene.

You're tourists, so don't be afraid to do tourist things. Stay at a hotel right on Times Square. It's a fucking trip to see thousands of people out and about at midnight.

Sucks during the holidays. Not the time to be here.

we go and do the tourist thing every year. st. pats cathedral, ice skating and the tree at rock, the show at radio city music, the windows and the stores, lots to do.
