Quick Question

Forums:

We bought a window mount room air conditioner in the middle of summer when it was over 100 for a number of days, mostly for our old cat, who has since passed away - RIP Sebastian. It looks now like we wont be turning it on again this year, so what do I do with it?

A. Nothing.

B. Cover it so ice and snow won't accumulate on it

C. Remove it for the winter. It was a pain to get it installed in the window - needed all kinds of shimming - so I'd rather not do that.

Any window mount AC owners care to chime in?

B)

Wrap a tarp/plastic around it.

Towel or blanket around the window jam to keep cold air out.

See how that works. Repeat or remove next year...

If it's a first floor window remove it. Would be members of congress will push it in and enter your house and steal your worldly goods...

Check the owner's manual (or look it up online)

Possible that some of the newer models can be left in the window.

If  you want it to work next summer it probably is worth removing it in the winter.

No worries, mate. Premises protected by two Main Coon Cats. They look like lovers, but in reality they're trained killers.

Thanks, TOD - I'll cover it up.

I'd remove and store it for the winter.  A)it's not insulated & B)come spring time you're going to want to open the window.

Hmm - so far we have two covers and two removes - we need a tie-breaker.

I've in the past wrapped a small blanket and tarp around blanket on the outside of the unit.

Through rain, snow, etc...

Had no problems.

But, as Jonas said, the best idea would be to remove.

Best practice is to remove, clean and store for the winter.

I'm with Tony. Depends on weather also.

In Salt Lake, the AC comes out, is stored downstairs, and eventually plastic will go up on the windows to stop drafts.

RIP to Sebastian.

The decision has been reached:

Due to the weather here in winter - usually above freezing and not too much snow - and my essential laziness, I'm gonna tarp the outside and blanket the inside.

Thanks guys and gal.

in chittenden county vermont we have found that window units last longer when we bring them inside each year, around autumn when they're no longer needed, to be cleaned and stored.

unlike yer region, surf, we get nasty winters and returning the window to normal helps with energy and heating ...

They make dandy little covers for that purpose which fit nicely around the A/C box. Thing with tarps hanging off stuff,  is you might get a wasp nest in there in Spring.

I take mine out this time of year and install a double-fan vent in its place.  Helps exhaust all the dust that comes with pets, at least until the cold temps arrive.

$10 bucks in link above.

I take mine out. Honestly, I wouldn't even put it in, but our bedroom is a converted attic and it can get hot as shit in there.

Now I'm feeling bad that I'm leaving it in.

Thanks. sad

>>>Now I'm feeling bad that I'm leaving it in.

Is it big enough to get a hernia or slipped disc?

Leave it in, cover and insulate. Your back won't feel bad.

+ it will be hot next summer.

Put in central a/c....climate change means hotter summers....as you get older hot temps bother people more.

Only question after that is where do I set my t-stat.  Problem solved.

RIP Kitty

I am happy that I still have the window A/C unit in there.  Got muggy yesterday,  so I'm running it on "low".  The Dog really seems to enjoy it.
