Quincy Jones Interview-Vulture Magazine

Just read this "interview". Curious to hear thoughts.  Quincy seems like a prick.

When you are as old and successful as Quincy Jones, I guess you can get away with being a crazy prick.  But there are some whoppers in that interview.   "Beatles are no-playing motherfuckers" and the "worst musicians in the world.". Hendrix was "chickenshit."   The mob killed Kennedy.  MJ was a greedy bastard who stole his material from others (didn't Quincy make some money off those albums?).  Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen is one of the greatest guitar players ever. And, to top it off, he knows Hillary Clinton's secrets but can't talk about them.

My thought exactly, Ken. This interview seems like pure clickbait to drum up controversy. Yea, Paul Allen....

There’s a GQ article that’s longer.  He’s one interesting motherfucker.

I already respected and admired QJ before I read the interviews.

I respect and admire him even more now. He's a bad motherfucker

QJ has been around the block. The amount of truth he throws around in that article is gonna rub some boomers the wrong way, but you gotta scrub if you wanna get clean.

Motherfucker.

the mob did kill kennedy

"the amount of opinion he throws around" i think you meant to type

Quincy Jones is beyond opinion.

No, Fishcane. I meant truth.

>  Ringo? Don’t even talk about it. I remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldn’t get it. We said, “Mate, why don’t you get some lager and lime, some shepherd’s pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit.” So he did, and we called Ronnie Verrell, a jazz drummer. Ronnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up. Ringo comes back and says, “George, can you play it back for me one more time?” So George did, and Ringo says, “That didn’t sound so bad.” And I said, “Yeah, motherfucker because it ain’t you.” Great guy, though.

You see, it's right there in black and white.

Puts on his pants one leg at a time just like the rest of us

I'm pretty sure one of his 23 girlfriends from different countries actually put QJ's pants on for him, Fishcane.

This is one of those instances where it's probably best for one to recognize.

I recognize that many of his statements are factually inaccurate.

In your opinion, they probably are, Fishcane. They probably are.

His statements are factually not correct. He is messing with the interviewer and the twitter world fell in love with it this week. Nothing he says is any different then what Miles Davis used to say about everyone anyway so nothing new. Its not uncommon for those with a jazz background to take issue with rock timekeeping but his only studio time with Ringo/George Martin was on Sentimental Journey on which Ringo did no drumming.

Sure. He explains why Ringo did no drumming, too.

It's right there, in the interview.

 >He explains why Ringo did no drumming, too

yup, thats where the opinion part comes in.

Cool dude, def entertaining and love his work.

Gary Busey says some interesting things sometimes too

I lolled a couplea times.

Billie Jean wasn't stolen from that song. And if so, then it was a good steal.

I'm not defending MJ.

>> Billie Jean wasn't stolen from that song. And if so, then it was a good steal.

Makes sense.

I just reviewed my Lewisohn sessionography as well as Spizer and it appears to me that Ringo didnt pick up a drumstick during any of the Sentimental Journey sessions so until someone can provide evidence to contradict Lewisohn or Spizer, it appears to be bullshit.

Doesnt make it any less entertaining but as a rock critic he really has no credential, he should stick to the genres that made him famous. good from a humor standpoint, tho

Well, since rock music is just a cheapened / bastardized form of rhythm and blues, I would argue that he's overqualified.

But then I also don't need someone with a degree in Beatology to tell me what is and is not good, so...

I would argue that any motherfucker who's purchased drugs from Malcolm X and seen heroin injected into Ray Charles' scrotum is overqualified for anything.

I was blown away by the claim he had Jerry's missing finger in a mason jar next to his Grammies.

He really has seen and done it all.

>>>I'm pretty sure one of his 23 girlfriends from different countries actually put QJ's pants on for him

This.

Also, QJ is such a Boss Player, pants are in fact optional.

People with no shits left to give can be very entertaining.

I've always thought that much of the drumming on Beatles records is creatively brilliant, while every time I've seen Ringo or watched videos with him I've thought that he's an extremely basic drummer, and compared to his peers is actually pretty piss-poor.

I've also always thought that much of the drumming on McCartney's first solo album, which McCartney played himself, sounds very much like the drumming on Beatles records.

I've always been curious about that.

I like what you're insinuating here, Lance.

Go on...

Am I insinuating something?

All I know is that I don't think any of us are in a position to question anything Quincy Jones has to say about music or the people he's interacted with.

I also think it's possible that many are misinterpreting some of the things he said in that interview.

I also think it's possible that Jones is just having a great laugh from his place on high at our expense.

Either way I think it's hard to argue that the drumming on Beatles records IS pretty damned good.

I thought you were going to say Paul overdubbed all the drums on the Beatles' albums.

Obviously before he died in 1966, of course.

He knew what drum parts would be needed post 66 and recorded them all before his death.

Ringo has quite the charisma in his dance moves when he fronts the stage. Just to be fair. He waves both hands quite well.

why let the facts get in the way of a good story? Where is Jasper Carrott, surprised nobody has touted that gem yet....

“The Streetbeater" gets my vote for favorite Quincy Jones tune.  Sanford and Son theme.

That's the first time I have heard someone use NOT drinking as an excuse for saying all sorts of wack stuff.   Still an interesting and entertaining read.

I posted elsewhere its only when opinions get touted or stated as facts that the waters get muddied. I have no issue with his views/opinions, after all, no one is more entitled to them. But at least he is pointing out the factual inaccuracy of some of his statements.

From an entertainment perspective, its still good material

He should put it to music.

sounds like lavar ball...

Like I said in the other thread, now is perfect time for Paul to diss on Quincy’s trumpet playing. Even, Ringo should dig a lil and find some of those lack luster trumpet solos from Quincy.
