Rare western Oregon snow

Forums:

Not quite the same as a cool Colorado breeze, but we're working on it!  Picked up 2" in an hour,  had snow flurries on / off last few days.  Ain't much compared to the rest of the world, but it's pretty uncommon out here.  Still might get another inch or two before sunrise.

Took a few pics last night, actually caught some ice crystals in action, tried to repeat the pic but had no luck...

Just got up - 4 " here. We're on the tail end of the plowing schedule - with our steep hills, usually means no driving.

Snowed in again.

Snow in Western Oregon isn't that rare if you are up in the Cascades or the Coast Range.  In fact, Western Oregon boasts Mt. Hood, which is one of the few places in the world that offers year round skiing.

But yeah, the snow this week down on the valley floor is unusual, especially for this late in the season.   It was dumping like a blizzard last night in North Portland, but fortunately it was hovering just above freezing so we only had a couple of inches that stuck around and its already melting.

I got a couple of inches and it's melting fast. It was pretty last night.

Our snow was gone real quickly, oh well, was fun while it lasted.  And you're very correct Ken.  In fact, the winter olympics people practice on Mt. Hood in the summer, since it's one of the only ski areas to have year round snow (glaciers anyway).  The valleys actually do average around 8" of snow a year in western Oregon, but it just feels like snow (and thunderstorms) are that rare out here, and statistically they are.  Especially when you consider the 45th parallel goes right thru Salem (and Maine, lol).  But hell, once a meteorologist, always a meteorologist  (they call me Dr. Dewpoint out here, one of my many nicknames for the different "hats" I wear, LOL)

More Oregonier than thou?

The real "rare western oregon snow" is when it lasts more than a few hours

My kids had three snow days this week. They were psyched. Gonna keep dumping on Mt Hood this weekend, can’t wait to hit the slopes. Woot woot

Yeah, we got out and back in the pm after some melting

Now it's cold - for here. 20 deg. this morning. Had to leave the water dripping last night for the first time since Nov.-Dec.
