Redemption & Validation?

Forums:

I find the reviews are telling a story of not only members of the faithful but a new breed of fans 40 and under.  The videos confirm it. Enjoy the read and clickon the link.

The Grateful Dead was always a multi-headed beast, and the same goes for legacy offshoots like Dead & Company, the on-brand torch carrier featuring three core members of the Dead. (A fourth surviving member, bassist Phil Lesh, has retired from touring.)

Though its musical adventures may seem to the newbie like a big free-for-all, the Dead’s aesthetic has always been about a dance between form and chaos. Even the deepest improvisational tour of the cosmos resolves into soft re-entry, with a reassuring coherence asserting itself throughout the wandering path of each two-set outing.

So it was again for Dead & Company’s Saturday night concert at Fenway Park, the first of two. As did the group’s corresponding show last summer, this one proved a forceful musical statement that revealed the ensemble performing somewhere ............

Yawn

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Article couldn't even bother to name all the members of the band.

Poor Jeff.

And this actually made me laugh out loud.

Ill have what this guy's smokin.

The author thought drums was not coherent - I thought it was the best part of the show. lol

So my trip to the bathroom and to the concession stand would be the highlight of the show?

Worst stripper names ever!

Deconstructed?!

That's generous; I'd call it a cluster fuck.

Wait - did you have an incoherent trip to the bathroom and concession stand?

Hope it wasn't so incoherent that you asked the men's room attendant for a burger, and then pissed on the popcorn.

Why the hard sell?!?

Isn't a thread for each show more than enough?

Perhaps, it is you who are seeking validation.

Just a hypothetical thought. I have not attended any Dead co shows

Even back in the day, the Rhythm Devils portion of the shoe was a good time 4 a bathroom / concession stand visit.

At least for some of us.  To each his or her own.

Upon reading this thread title, it did sound like the return of Mike was imminent.

Haven't attended any Co shoe's either.  I was amused by the thought of a bathroom break being a shoe highlight.

Seemed funny when I first read it.

I hate to tell you folks who are so quick and strong to devalue this thing, but it is going, it's going strong and it isn't going anywhere (no pun intended).

Beyond us old-timers who are going for our reasons/"excuses", there are thousands & thousands of young people going to see this band, 15 to 25-year-olds who are getting turned on to something for the first time...

Having their minds blown.

Such as that might be.

To a degree, such as it was for any of us.

(Not comparing any bands or era's, just the timeless experience of youth exposed to new & seemingly amazing things)

This band isn't redemption or validation, it's continuation.

JUST Another Picky Dead Head.

That's great. Heck, I'd go if they played the PNC arts center, just not driving 90 minutes to go to the show.

Furthur on down the road?

Some like the Rhythm Devil portion of the shoe.

Some even like Co.

There is nothing wrong with either.

I'm glad that folks R enjoying Co.

I'm not sure that Co requires either redemption or validation.

From what I grok, Bob & Phil spent 30 years on the road together & remain friends.

This whole notion about who better represents the GD or plays better (GD) music seems silly.

Seeing the birthday thread for Robert Hunter and then reading this thread, I realized that all of the people who are new to the music are also new to the lyrics - they're hearing the words of one of the true masters for the first time - this is a wonderful opportunity for consciousness expansion on that level.

I never really subscribed to "who better reps the GD" thing. All the post GD bands carried on the spirit.  Except Rat Dog of course indecision

Lance again clears the bases with a 450 shot to  "Dead Center".  Leads VLZ with homers and extra base hits.

Hopefully drugs were involved in all those minds being blown.  Kk's musical opinion has always been suspect outside of his broomfield 2006 review which I agree with.

Deep, Billy. Made me think of Grasshopper's  Master.

>>>>>>>  Except Rat Dog of course indecision

Quite honestly, I'd enjoy a Rat Dog show far more than Dead Co.  Rat Dog setlists were far more unpredictable and interesting, if I may dare say so.  The Rat Dog songs are overall far preferable to some of the standard '80's GD staples DeadCo is playing.  I'd far rather hear Odessa, Two Djinn, Ashes & Glass, Even So -> Oct Queen over Bucket, LLRain, Sailor -> Saint . . . Any F-in Day.  If only because I'm far less familiar with the RD material . . . Also would take Mark Karan over Mayernnaise any day of the week, despite the grief/lack of respect I used to feel for him back when I dismissed him as a mere Jerry Clone.

And oh yeah, Ratdog played far cooler far smaller venues for far lesser ticket prices/ ridiculous expensive parking/ outrageous VIP tix/parking fees/ long walks to venues/ huge clusterfuck crowds/ sold out difficult to get tix/etc etc etc . . .

I love Ratdog. So jazzy.

I know, right?  And to think, I used to have to literally be DRAGGED to RD shows by friends in the 2000's . . . .

My RD showgoing friends gave me a few gems:

"The Only Reason Ratdog Plays Stuff Like Dark Star & The Other One Is That It Looks Good on the Setlist"

They introduced me to a people-watching game @ GD related shows:

"Another Sighting Of A Presumably Heterosexual Male Proud to Wear His Ratdog T-Shirt In Public"

I upped the ante with:

"If the T-Shirt Ain't Enuff, There's Always the Ratdog Zip Up Hoodie for $55"

Then one day I was introduced to the Admin of the Ratdog message board, who had the Ratdog symbol prominently tattooed on his Forearm.  Now THAT'S Deadication!

>>>I hate to tell you folks who are so quick and strong to devalue this thing, but it is going, it's going strong and it isn't going anywhere

You could say the same about Justin Bieber. He's a Latin King now.

>>>it's continuation.

No, it's recycling. There is no novelty.

At least with Ratdog, Bobby tried to do his own thing. He has given that notion up in favor of a wax replica.

Perhaps there are better adjectives than Redemption and Validation to describe your emotional reaction to seeing Dead & Co., KK?  Those just make it sound like you're cashing in a coupon or getting your parking paid for.

have friends that go. its fine. im not interested but wont tell them not to go...

Reminds me of my elderly Dad, who called to tell me he's won the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes.  So I Googled it & see that there's all kinds of Elderly scams surrounding this, then I see that Publisher's Clearing House itself is a scam, they promise people "you've almost won, just keep sending us stuff", which is what I figured out my Dad was doing.  So I asked him what he was buying, he says "magazines", I'm like, "what, Time, Life, US News, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News"?  "No I already got those, I'm talking about Magazines, you know, 'Magazines', with titles like 'What Women Want'", I'm like "Ooooooooo . . . Kayyyyyy, Way to Go Randy Dad!!!!!!!"  So I Googled it again & sure enuff PCS sells Porno, & there's even Christian groups boycotting them for it . . .
