Red House Autonomous Zone - named after a red house in the trendy Mississippi Street neighborhood in North Portland that is the subject of a long running eviction battle between the long term black residents and a developer who bought the place at a foreclosure sale.   The homeowners were victims of a predatory lending scam and the situation highlights the problem of black residents being forced out of their historic neighborhoods through gentrification (full disclosure - this is my side of town so I am part of the gentrification).

The developer has been trying to evict the owners for sometime and a camp of activists sprung up in the fall to protest the eviction.   Yesterday morning, the cops showed up to complete the eviction but they were run off and throughout the day, people descended into the neighborhood and erected barricades in the streets:

The Mayor is talking tough saying there will be no autonomous zones in the city, but as of this morning, the barricades were still up and I don't see them packing up and leaving voluntarily anytime soon.

I just heard of this by way of the mayor's tough talk but, given that the house was apparently paid off until another  mortgage was taken out against it in order to help pay for a relative's court case defense fund and then presumably defaulted on a while back, how are the now-former owners not SOL and what is their justification for trying to stay put there? Blaming racial discrimination and gentrification seem quite un-rooted in (their) reality.

It sounds like a sad situation and predatory lending sucks bad (lots of people signed bad paper in the aftermath of the '08 melt-down too) but sign they did and probably have no legal recourse. What might I be missing in this?

It's an eviction blockade, not an autonomous zone. Yes, I understand this can be difficult to decipher as both seem to appear like giant piles of heavily spray painted wooden crap.

I see the privileged Portland gringos are playing cops and robbers again.  LMFAO, how cute.

Take it to the streets, cuz!
