RIP Bill Russell

Forums:

Greatest winner of all time in team sports. A legend.

Ate everyone's lunch on the court,,, was another powerful voice for civil rights, and did it all with grace + dignity.

What a great life. What a man the likes of we'll never see again.

RIP Bill + Thanks

I couldn't agree more.

Until the arrival of Michael Jordan, he was the G.O.A.T.  Completely changed how defense was played.

But beyond that, he was a trailblazer for Civil Rights activism.  One of the good ones.

He was born in West Monroe, Louisiana. the birthplace of another great NCAA and NBA big man, Elvin Hayes.  My mom was born in Monroe just a year and a half earlier.  Bill's family experienced the horrors of the segregation and prejudice endemic to the Deep South at that time, and moved to Oakland, California when he was 8.  A lot more than the Ouchita River separates Monroe from West Monroe.

He lived his final 30 years just outside of Seattle, on Mercer Island in Lake Washington.  A giant living in sight of Mount Rainier, among the tall Pine trees.

When you have more championship rings than you do fingers, you're Legend status. Sui generis.

What a H U G E loss.  The greatest.

He led USF to NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956, including a string of 55 consecutive victories

Russell helped the U.S. national basketball team win the gold medal in Melbourne, defeating the Soviet Union national basketball team 89–55 in the final game with an 8–0 undefeated run

Eleven NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in thirteen seasons, two of which were won as player-coach.   ***One team, not like today's spoiled brat carpet baggers like Lebron James**

Chamber - who?

I read an interview with Wilt who stated he wasn't jealous of Russell and that Bill bought out the best in him, but Bill was the best period.
