RIP Bleaker Bob

Forums:

Sad news that Robert Plotnik/Bleaker Bob has passed away. Bob possibly influenced rock and roll as much as anyone and his store was the alpha independent record store that was/is the blueprint of stores all over this country. RIP.

"Jinxx"

I owe you a Coke.

At least you spelled his nickname correctly. Hopefully none of my "downtown" buds see this or I will never live it down. lol

Used to lurk around there and other Village LP merchants as a kid.  "Second Coming"  was a favorite and had more Boots.
I was actually there one afternoon when the Unmarked Blue Van dropped off the latest shipment of Zappa Boots.

Counter dude sampled the freshly-pressed LP's with a few 30-second needle-drops and the Deal was concluded.

Might have been 1979 or 1980 ?

Bleecker Bob's was much larger and well-lit in comparison to 'Second Coming'  or some other village LP shoppes.

Always the place to schelp to when I lived in Brooklyn, then I got a job at the old St Vincent's (1977-79) and it was an easy walk over. Bob was a bit of a dick but that was part of the fun I guess. I remember being in there when Get Happy was due, he had the import hanging on the wall. I asked what it was and he said "the new Costello wtf do you think it is" Like in those days I had anyway of knowing release dates RIP Bob

That was a cool record store, I remember he had a copy of The Good Rats "Tasty" hanging on the wall for $50. That was a lot of money.

Second Coming was THE place for boots. And yeah, they always had all the Zappa boots. There would be one copy in the rack, and after you bought it, they would go in the back and put another copy out. Always made you wonder if you were buying the last copy, but I guess that was the idea. Googies next door was a good bar.

There was another great store on 6th between East 13/14 (around the corner from St V ) which cost me a ton of money, called Second Hand Rose. They had boots but they didn't display them, either you knew to ask or you didn't

Things are looking really Bleak for Bob I guess.

Not sure if Bleaker Street would make sense. It definitely lacks vegetation but I’d say it’s still pretty lively down there.
