He's been ill for awhile, but still a great loss. I was a huge fan! RIP.

Glad he's no longer suffering, RIP to another legend...     ...sigh...

David Lindley - El Rayo X (full Lp)

RIP Mr. Dave.  So sad to read this.  Loved seeing him in any setting.  El Rayo X was a tremendous band.

Great player, RIP. Always an add in any lineup, and I love his soundtrack stuff; a very tasteful and classy talent.

Curious if this is confirmed.  I read an obit someone posted on steelguitar site and that obit isn't Mr Dave (wrong DOB)

a musician's musician

so greasy

He was a highlight at G.D. Laguna Seca, 1988? I'm confused between 1987 and '88. There are plenty of YouTube videos, but with both dates.

Like many of us, I was there for both years but can't remember who opened when. Murky memories - I remember him solo and with El Rayo-X - is that right?

Didn't Los Lobos open?

Los Lobos opened at least one of those years, as well as David Lindley, in I believe 1988.

GD 1987 Laguna Seca - Hornsby and the Range opened, Ry Cooder next, then GD. I was there.

Missed 88 . sad

Sadly, his passing has been confirmed:

Great player.  Wish I'd seen him.  RIP

Nooooooooo!

One of my vary favs, got to meet him in Seattle and a Seattle taper buddy pissed him off, too... a long story.

Fav shows were at Calaveras County / Angels Camp 87, opening for Santana and GD, and then also that 87 Laguna Seca.

Sad times for our favorite artists this winter.

RIP Mr Lindley

Noooooo

My daughter's first show in San Lorenzo.  Lindley, Jerry Jeff and Bobby (after a few hours at Henflings). My daughter and I went to see him years later and got to talk to him. He autographed a cd for her and took a great picture together.  That memory sticks with me as much as El Rayo X at the Catalyst.

We've been lucky to enjoy the talents of so many great musicians during this short time on earth. Thanks for the music David. Sleep in the stars. RIP

Damn this one hurts

^ so fucking good. Thanks, Noodler

Damn, I was just thinking about him and Walley Ingram and the Twango Bango stuff, so much fun. I remember seeing him one time at The Sellersville Theater, he's starting up an encore, and my kid yells out "Cat Food Sanwiches!!!!". Dave looks up with one eye, sideways smiles and croaks out "man, you guys are really sick", and proceeds to change out instruments and goes into Cat Food Sandwiches. A great night capped by smiles and laughter, and a signed CD and handshake to boot!

I loved this guy--saw him so many times.  Once time at the HOB in Boston with my buddy Jerome, I think during a Page & Plant tour, maybe 1993, we were up front and there were 2 tables 10 feet away and we looked over and it was Steven Tyler, Joe Perry (and his wife), Jimmy Page and Robert pant having out together and just taking David in.  That is respect

wow that discography is incredible

This, written by Joe Rut, is full and beautifully written.

An excerpt:

What can I say?

Maybe this: David Lindley made everyone with whom he played sound BETTER. His presence lifted the songs to a higher level. His harmonies were spot on. His vocals weird and soulful. His instrumental prowess was legendary. He stood out when it was right to stand out, and blended in when it was right to blend in. He was the consummate “sideman” when that was his role. He was the “charismatic bandleader” the that was his role. He was the self-contained, one-man-show when that was his role in later years.

Thank you Noodler! Vern and I were at that Fur Peace show, Jorma was beaming, this is so sad, hate to lose a gem.

David Lindley 3.jpg

Sharing this good story from old-school Seattle buddy -- Taper Gary... he wouldn't let me tell it for years, but now wants to contribute to the memorial thread... I was at the same show:

"So Christine, as requested, my only live recording story of David.

7/19/00 Century Ballroom, Seattle - David and Wally Ingram:

I think even back then it was known that David was not taper friendly.  He was a defender of a musician's rights to their art.  His song about Bo Didley says it all.

The Century Ballroom was a small dance floor and stage room.  My former supervisor told me he and his wife loved to go there for dancing as in square dancing I think.  Anyway cool laid back community place.

So as I mentioned no taping pack or mic stand went with me to this show but I managed to get my DAT recorder in because that's what tapers do.  Always a chance...

I went alone and immediately struck up conversation with the sound "guy" engineer.  Just one guy doing the sound board - kind of in my favor.  As if I didn't know he (Jim James?) told me David does not allow audience recording.  But I should stand by...  Stand by I did without making myself a pain in the ass.  Finally just before the show started he gave me the deal.  I must surrender the tape to him but he would give me his phone number.

So even with the fear of David or maybe they were friends I got to plug in and discreetly run my tape deck.  This was really a trust deal and at the end of the show I gave him the tape.

Several months passed and I called him in like October to see if I could get the tape back.  I think it was sometime that went by but sure enough a small cardboard box showed up in the mail with the tape inside.  I still have it somewhere.  To my delight the show was recorded without a hitch - what a great musician David was! "

RIP, Mr. Dave.

Kimock on Lindley:

David Lindley's Rig

X
That guy, I think he's a reggae fan, and I did want to ask you about reggae. It seems like a kind of touchstone for you.

SK
I love reggae music.

X
Why?

SK
It just feels good. It's party music. As far as I'm concerned, Bob Marley kind of wrote the book, and I love Bob Marley, and I love playing reggae, and I love hearing reggae. It's a cool thing. You know who did reggae good that I liked? David Lindley. I liked what he did with the reggae thing. I love Lindley's playing.

X
When Zero plays Mercury Blues, I always hear it as a David Lindley tribute.

SK
Absolutely. I don't know how it came up that we did that song. But what was the other one we did? Oh, the Sexual Healing thing. John Kahn used to come out to the barn and play with us and hang out. He would always be pulling out all these old Motown tunes and soul tunes, and once he says, "Let's play Sexual Healing," because he liked the bassline. He played the changes and I went, "This is a great tune and everything but this is lame," because I didn't want to do it like that, but it's the same changes to one of those Lindley things. [Plays on the guitar to demonstrate, the melody used for Zero's instrumental tune Tongue 'n' Groove] You know? So that's Lindley.

When I made my little Kimock & Friends disc, I said right on there: if you copy this disc send five bucks to Dave Lindley. [Laughs]

I used to go see Lindley play all the time. I used to stand right at the edge of the stage, and watch all the stuff that he did.

X
Have you ever played with him, or would you like to?

SK
I would love to. I'm not worthy. All my shit, man, is Lindley's shit. The same kind of guitar, the same kind of pickups, the same kind of tuning, the same strings, the same amp, the same all that stuff. So, whatever people say about all the rest of this stuff, I'm using Lindley's rig. That's where that's at.
