RIP David Ogden Stiers

Everybody loved him as Major Charles Winchester III on M*A*S*H*,  and his many other roles on TV and silver screen.

Originally from Eugene, Oregon, he'd been living in Newport (OR) on the coast for a very long time.  He was quite involved in local activities, even guest conducting the Newport Symphony from time to time.  Always good with the witty and erudite banter,  where silliness prevailed, he was a very warm and gentle man, and will be missed!  RIP

How odd...I just found a M*A*S*H run on sundance yesterday.  The one episode I watched was his character dealing with a close call of death, and Winchester wondering, "What's it like?"

Did not realize he was in Newport.

RIP - a good actor.

I was wrong about him being originally from Oregon (was Illinois), but he attended HS and U of O there for bit.   Had retired to Newport

Is that his Adam Schiff face in the last photo?

Rest In Peace

Gentlemen...

RIP

He also conducted the Eugene symphony 2 or 3 times. Talented, versatile, nice guy.

Saw him on Broadway in The Magic Show, long before Major Winchester. Got a chance to tell him that one day when he was doing v/o for Ken Burns in a NYC audio studio adjacent to where I was directing an ESL session. He was on break, and poked his head into our control room to see what else was going on. He enjoyed telling us about a teenage David Copperfield apprenticing to Doug Henning during the run of that show.
Mr. Stiers, you will be missed, but you are remembered.
