On his Some Time in New York City album in 1972, Lennon sang about Peel on the song, "New York City":
Standing on the corner
Just me and Yoko Ono
We was waiting for Jerry to land
Up come a man with a guitar in his hand
Singing, "Have a marijuana if you can"
His name was David Peel
And we found he was real
He sang, "The Pope smokes dope every day"
Up come a policeman, shoved us to the street
Singing, "Power to the People today"
it is going to be some kind of party up there in heaven about now.
When I was a juvenile delinquent, my friends and I from the New Jersey suburbs used to go to The City to see David Peel perform in small bars in Greenwich Village, such as the Back Fence. In those days - 1979-82 - the authorities looked the other way and let the Village bars serve minors. It was great. We would take bus and subway to West 4th Street, get overcharged for weed in Washington Square Park, get stoned and drunk all night, ride subway uptown to GW bridge, then walk home 7 miles to Teaneck at 5am. When I think about David Peel, I picture my friend Jon barfing magnificently over the bridge rail into the Hudson River at sunrise. Not quite Haleakala, but a breathtaking Technicolor Yawn nonetheless. Damn good times!
Played a memorable gig (Libertarian Party Benefit) with David at the old Coney Island High on St. Mark's Place in the mid-'90's... quite an evening indeed. I used to see him CONSTANTLY in the poster store and over at our guitarist's apartment. A sometimes-lovable, sometimes infuriating NYC character. If there's an afterlife, he is no doubt badgering the shit out of John Lennon (and probably Jerry, too). Rest In Peel.
