RIP Harry Dean Stanton

Forums:

Great character actor in a ton of films and quite the party animal.

One of the true originals.

He crossed the Border Line.

Fuggin double bummer. always made an effort to look for him in the secondary starring list.

A fucking icon , he was.

RIP, Sir.

pretty cool cool actor- dug him in a lot of films including the Missouri Breaks.

RIP

BINGO!!! Missouri Breaks is a great example of his work and such an under rated sleeper of a movie with incredible star power including Nicholson and Brando.

Stanton's  work was always noticed in a fantastic subtle way.

after twin peaks just wrapped up this is a bummer. catherine coulson died only a few days after they shot her scenes as the log lady, miguel ferrer died only a bit after filming, bowie had to reschedule his shoot and died before he could try again...really rough year for the lynch crew, in the midst of one of his best creations of all time.

he was really great as carl rodd, especially in FWWM...and for any peaks fans that might be reading this, mark frost confirmed that according to show cannon, although it has never been revealed onscreen or in one of frost's books, carl rodd was one of the original bookhouse boys.

cant wait to see lucky, this looks great.

Thanks for the photos,  Mr. Druba.

I did not realize he was the Dude in  'Alien' film.

Which film is that with Him & the Martin D-28  ??

He was from a musical family, from Wikipedia;

"Stanton also occasionally toured nightclubs as a singer/guitarist, playing mostly country-inflected cover tunes.[5] He appeared in the Dwight Yoakam music video for "Sorry You Asked", portrayed a cantina owner in a Ry Cooder video for "Get Rhythm", participated in the video for Bob Dylan's "Dreamin' of You", and in 2003, appeared in the video for "Stop" by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club."

Here he is last year in a celebration in his honor, w/ Johnny Depp and Kris Kristofferson, 80

From Wikipedia:

"Harry Dean Stanton (July 14, 1926 – September 15, 2017) was an American actor, musician, and singer.[1] Stanton's career spanned over 60 years, during which he appeared in such films as Cool Hand Luke, Kelly's Heroes, Dillinger, The Godfather Part II, Alien, Escape from New York, Christine, Paris, Texas, Repo Man, Pretty in Pink, The Last Temptation of Christ, Wild at Heart, The Straight Story, The Green Mile, Alpha Dog, and Inland Empire."

"His television credits were extensive, including eight appearances between 1958 and 1968 on CBS' Gunsmoke and four on the network's Rawhide, as well as a cameo as himself on Two and a Half Men (having previously appeared with Jon Cryer in Pretty in Pink and with Charlie Sheen in Red Dawn), and alongside Sean Penn and Elvis Costello. He had been featured since 2006 as Roman Grant, the manipulative leader/prophet of a polygamous sect in the HBO television series Big Love. He also played Henry in an episode of the television series Adam-12."

I don't think there are words that can covey what that man really was.

I'm not sure what "he was a man's man" really means, but I bet it refers to him.

And I'm not even a big movie fan.

But he was something else.

My head is bowed tonight.

Harry on Doug Loves Movies a few years ago promoting a documentary about himself:   http://douglovesmovies.com/

for a guy who's been in over a hundred films he sure doesn't remember many of of them.

He looked like a guy dying in every movie.

Thats tough.  He was a scene-stealer for certain. I can't think of a character of his that i didn't like. i was always impressed by the range of crazy and sometimes gentle roles he played.

RIP
