Pisses me off every time I see the j geils articles that refer to Freeze Frame, Centerfold, and Love Stinks as what the band did. One of the greatest mother fuckin live bands that ever graced a stage.
"We are going to blow your face out", now that is what a j geils party is all about
Saw J. Giles first time when I was 15 in high school. Loved em. Always made it a point to see them when we crossed paths. I saw them about 15 times. Never disappointed me.
Yup , too bad ... I live in the same town as he did , and used to see him often at the Post Office , gas station, driving one of his vintage sports cars, and at the supermarket buying his tonic water and limes . He definitely had a rough few years with a couple DUI's , and an intervention or two . That could be why he wasn't in the band for the past few years - attempts to block the band from performing under their name, etc....
I was sitting next to him at a local restaurant a few years back , and he was discussing playing at TXR with his manager . I later read somewhere he wasn't impressed in the least by Phil's playing... I will try to find that snippet .
Probably 20 years ago or so , he would often sit in with a local blues band every other weekend . No question they were loving every minute of it .
Similar to zz top...almost like these bands were two differant bands pre and post mtv...centerfold, freeze frame, thats crap j geils compared to their early stuff
Not bad on there own (those songs) ...they just dont even compare w earlier j geils
I'm no aficionado of J. Geils or ZZ Topp - but Billy Gibbons is way more about vintage tones and monster riffs whereas J. Geils was a bluesman who played pop.
And to boot Billy Gibbons played with and opened for Jimi Hendrix.
Found some online evidence to validate my memories of the experience:
Massachusetts’ J. Geils and Friends are in the Bay Area for a performance at Bob Weir’s Mill Valley, CA club Sweetwater this evening. Last night, the group also played an impromptu gig at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads. The band came out and did a couple songs before Lesh joined in for “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” and “Turn On Your Love Light.” Later in the night, Lesh returned for an encore of “It Hurts Me Too” and “Let the Good Times Roll.” The performance took place in Terrapin Crossroads’ intimate bar performance space and was advertised on the club’s homepage as “Special FREE bar show tonight.”
"I later read somewhere he wasn't impressed in the least by Phil's playing..."
Not a big surprise if true. Phil is pretty much the anti-traditional blues bass player. He and Tommy Shannon are just about polar opposites in terms of style.
Not at all in early years.....and thats all i was getting at w my comment that also mentioned ZZ Top...not comparing those two bands in any way (and both bands are amongst my all time favorites) except for the fact that their music pre and post mtv was differant...this is true of alot bands of that era im sure, as they adapted to the video age...but, these two bands in particular...in my opinion, were both much much better pre-mtv...

I saw him at Yoshi's when Phil joined him--it was the night after they played together at TXR back in 2012 and got ome great photos of him--and Phil. I lost interest when Freeze Frame hit big but were such a tight band. Peter Wolfe is one of the best frontmen ever in R&B/rock. Somewhere around 1996, we caught him and Magic Dick at this great little hole in the wall pub called called the Sitting Bull in Mynard, MA (I think it is long gone now) and they tore it up. He was a very low key player in that he was economical in his notes and made most of them count.
A very sad loss. I was a huge Geils fan in the late 70s and early 80s. Saw The Mighty J. Geils Band no fewer than 25 times. Would go "on tour" and see Hartford, New Haven, Springfield, Worcester, Providence. The energy at a Geils show was unparalleled at that time in my experience. The entire place was up, rocking, giggin' and totally in to it.... every show! When I saw my first Dead show in 1982 I thought "This is like a Geils show except everyone's tripping!"
I recall sleeping out for Geils tickets many times. You remember, back in the day with Ticketron when you got in line about 5:00 the night before, hung, partied, slept ont he concrete or in a chair on the sidewalk to get tix when they went on sale the next morning. Ha... what fun that was!!
Arguably, next to Mick Jagger, Peter Wolf is the greatest Rock N' Roll front man ever. DK was so solid on bass and of course, MD blazed, and still does, on the harp. And Jay, always holding it all down with his subtle and super solid licks, riffs and very unique sound.
One of my first albums (actually and 8-track) was Bloodshot and I was immediately enthralled with the JGB! Blow Your Face Out still gets me super high and rockin'! One of the best live albums ever. This band is a true integral part of US rock n' roll history with a deep history and knowledge of early rock n' roll and blues. They paid homage to them all the time.
A sad day for my nostalgic memories of youth.

Right after that they started doing the '80's pop stuff & I lost interest. Now I know where I heard about J's opinion of Phil as a bass player .
I bumped into a friend this morning who owns an establishment in our town that J frequented . He had heard about J playing at TXR a couple weeks earlier , so was eager to ask about how it went . Basically , J told him that " he was one of the worst bass players I ever played with ".
I think it may have been sour grapes - I saw Peter Wolf a few years ago ( and he was great) , and he made a disparaging comment about DSO . Something to the effect that the GD didn't deserve a tribute band as such...
The latest word around here is that after he lost his license back in January , he required regular well-being checks and was in rough shape .
I found alot of "single" videos on you tube from 8/14/2010, the show i mentioned above, where they opened for Aerosmith at Fenway...watching now...but, still cant find whole show...
