I was at Super Bowl XI where he coached the Oakland Raiders to a win over the Vikings. As an Eagle Scout, I had the choice of holding a banner for 5 miles along the Rose Parade route, or be an usher at the Super Bowl game at the Rose Bowl a week later... some decisions in life are much easier than others, lol.
That pic looks like the Rose Bowl. I saw Superbowl XVII there in 83. Redskins v Dolphins. Awesome game. Got tickets in the lot for face value. $50. Very last row in the end zone.
A friend from the OSU marching band commented on my FB post, so I dug this up for him; (no Madden content, but for historical perspective)
the halftime show of Superbowl XI
As a coach/professional competitor he did something almost none of those type can; he quit when he was on top, walking away when he was still young with years of coaching ahead of him.
As a broadcaster he was able to explain the game not as a brainiac or technical automaton, but as a regular Joe, the guy on the next bar stool. He made it fun to watch, and you'd still understand why things happened.
And here in the Bay Area he continued up until just a few years ago with a daily segment on the local all-news radio station, where every morning he would call in and chat for about ten minutes about whatever was happening, in sports and not in sports, and his humor, his smarts and his everyman style were always there.
I have always had that station playing low as background noise and would wake up right around the time he would call in, and I looked forward to hearing him every morning for many years.
Dude was a major success at everything he did, and he always did it his way. A life well lived for sure.
I also enjoyed the Madden Report on All News KCBS radio. The reporters on air with him were usually struggling not to bust up laughing. Madden's reports seldom had much to do with news, but they sure were funny, and made me feel better about the day. Oh yeah, and football. The Oakland Raiders were bad ass in his time.
When Stan Bunger at KCBS was told he had to do the segment with Madden he did what any good radio reporter did and asked about how to prepare for the Madden report. The staff all laughed at him. No preparation - Madden just called in you put him on the air and you wing it and it worked.
I got to go to several Madden BBQ's at his man cave warehouse in Pleasanton where he would watch the games on Sunday with select friends. The BBQ was a KCBS event for clients that Madden had to contractually go to, and he was the nicest guy even at that. His family would come and his wife would even cook and bring a side dish. Every Bay Area rancher wanted to be there and show off their BBQ, smoked meat skills. It was not an event for vegetarians. That was the best work event I ever had to go to.

Despite all the great & varied personal experiences that have been described by zoners over the years, it's rare when I feel envy while reading about them.

When he got hired as a coach he was given tickets that he was responsible for selling. The league was different back then.

I'm damned envious about that one though.
