RIP- Shane MacGowan

Forums:

Tough day for punk rock today with the death of The Pouge's Shane MacGowan. I was amazed that he made it this far. If ever someone lived life hard and a full throttle, it was Shane.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

As some of you may know, I am good friends with Finny McConnell of The Mahones. I am also friendly with a few of the former members of The Pogues. While I have heard variations of this story from numerous parties, the sparkle in the eyes when telling the tale also makes me wonder if it is just good old Irish story telling.

Shane and Finny both had bands that needed names and during a night on the lash the name, Pogue Mahone (Celtic for Kiss my arse) came up. Both Finny and Shane wanted it so they decided that the last man standing would get the name. Many hours later and after many rounds of drink, both were still standing and going strong. It was then that they agreed the each person would get half of the name; Shane getting The Pogues and Finny getting The Mahones. As I said, this may or may not be completely true, but why let the truth stand in the way of a good story???

Shane's funeral was today, what would have been Sinead O'Connor's 57th birthday:

Nick Cave also played a song.  Bob Geldof and Johnny Depp gave readings.  Depp was a pallbearer.  Bono was in attendance.  The locals sang "Dirty Old Town" as his coffin was carried through the streets.  Irish King of the common people.
