Such an immense impact on music. The list of heavyweights he played and collaborated with is too long to list, and he co-wrote classics like Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay, Midnight Hour, Knock on Wood among others.
I saw him with Neil and other various groups including the Blues Brothers, which I think got him noticed by my generation, but that guy ruled in multiple generations.
Glad to see Steve Cropper getting some love here. He was such an integral part of an immense body of work, be it playing, songwriting, and or production. That NYT obit is spot on.
One of the first albums I ever bought was Booker T & The MGs greatest hits, from a cutout bin in a dept store in the late 70s. Been a huge fan of Stax and Booker T & MGs ever since. I saw Steve Cropper only once - that was with Booker T & The MGs at Slims SF circa 1994. (I remember it being a great show, but Duck Dunn seemed to have a beer after every song. He sounded great, but almost fell over taking a bow at the end - I'm not making this shit up.) There are a couple of great Stax documentaries that I recommend. One is a multi-part series on HBOMax from last year. And there is an older documentary "Respect Yourself" which is also quite good.
If you ever saw a guy wearing a Stax shirt at TXR, it was probably me.

Steve was a soul man through and through. Booker T. Jones is now the last of Booker T. & The. MG's.
He made an interesting record in 1969 with Albert King and Pops Staples called "Jammed Together" that is worth a listen.

Course there's this
Course there's this incredible BEAST of an album, with Steve's fingerprints all over it, playing counterpoint to Albert.
Certainly one of the most important electric blues albums ever recorded
