Road Rage

Forums:

I was driving to work this morning. The road opened from a two lane road to a three lane road with the passing lane in my direction. I pulled in the left lane and started passing the slower cars. I was doing 67 miles an hour in a 55 speed limit area when I noticed that a huge 4x4 truck had flown up behind me and was riding my ass. I was close enough so that I could see his Oregon plates. I couldn’t pull to the right at that point because there were cars there. I was coming up on a stop light which turned yellow -  so I started to stop. My only other choice was to run a red light. I easily came to stop didn’t have to screech to a halt or anything when I notice the truck can’t stop and has to pull to my left a little to avoid hitting me.

We come to a stop,  and I’m watching in my mirror - the guy in the truck who just avoided hitting me because he was riding my ass and I stopped for a red light, starts to lose his shit. He is flipping me off, rolls down his window to scream out of it. Undoes his seat belt and starts to head out. This all happens while what I assume is his 10 year old daughter watches on with a confused look on her face from the front seat next to him.

No point to this just glad I’m getting old enough that I won’t have to deal with how fucked up that 10 year old girl is going be.

That's a scary spot to be in (red light with a tailgater).  Something similar happened to me last week, but it was a woman driving her SUV, with a young girl in the back seat.  She accelerated as I was trying to make a smooth stop for the light and she had to swerve to her right.  That intersection has cameras and I did not want to get a ticket.  Fortunately, there was no rage, but it was surprising to me that she could accelerate on my tail for what would have surely been a red light by the time she entered the intersection.  (she actually looked a little embarrassed - I think that she was talking to the girl behind her)

I feel grateful that I'm not into active confrontation with people who do crazy shit on the roads.  My #1 objective is to get from one place to another safely and I have no problem with taking the blame myself to help diffuse the situation.  I know: that's no guarantee that I will be free from others' road rage, but I'm certainly hoping not to escalate it.

Now, my wife on the other hand...

Road Rage sucks. Had an incident last week on a steep, windy and  narrow mountain road. Some guy in a sports car was coming up the mountain road as I was headed down. There was a pullout about 10 behind his vehicle, and none behind me in sight. No room for us to pass on the narrow road. He demanded that I back UP the hill as he continued moving his car towards mine. When I asked him to back up a few feet and pull into the pullout he refused and demanded that I get out of his way. So I started inching slowly backwards  - up the steep hill. Luckily a car coming down the hill stopped in time and didn't rear end me -  and then the guy in the sports car pulled around both of us scraping his vehicle on the hillside as he passed. Poetic justice.

learn how to drive and get in the right lane

Nancy, you do realize that the other driver, asshole that he may be, was asserting his right to follow California law:

"On Mountain Roads

When 2 vehicles meet on a steep road where neither vehicle can pass, the vehicle facing downhill must yield the right-of-way by backing up until the vehicle going uphill can pass. The vehicle facing downhill has the greater amount of control when backing up the hill."

Road rage is freeking stupid and I have tried to educate my son about the importance of not letting other drivers piss you off and to let things slide.

>>>>>>>Horrific Crashes

Back in the late 1980s, my friends and I were traveling from Wyoming to Florida for spring break.   We were acting stupid on I-25 outside Castle Rock, CO and came across a BMW with even more stupid young men behind the wheel.  Anyway, I don't recall exactly what started it, but beer cans were flung and obscene gestures were made.  The kids in the BMW started swerving at us and were being really aggressive.  All of a sudden, the BMW overcorrects after a swipe at us and leaves the roadway.  We started cheering but then the BMW keeps going off road, up a little embankment, and then flew into the air.   It then came down and rolled a few times and we saw one of the occupants fly out a window.

We pulled over and ran down to the wreck (the car stereo was still blasting a Scorpions cover of a Who song) and find a dude standing there taking a piss.   Apparently he was wearing his seat belt and appeared unscathed.   However, he then says "Where's my buddy?" and we hear groaning coming from the bushes.   We then found the other dude who wasn't wearing his seat belt and he was busted up bad.  Eventually, life flight was called in and we even helped carry dude to the helicopter on a back board.

Don't know if he lived, but I tell that story to stress:  (1) don't get into road rage incidents and (2) always wear your seatbelts.

Republican white males seem to be the biggest offenders. Many of them seem to have anger issues.

Johnny, since there was no pull up behind me and there was a pull out about 10 feet behind his car it made zero sense for me to start backing uphill on a blind curve. Not to mention that I was on the cliff side of the road - no shoulder..common sense should prevail.

My 2 cents

I hate Prius drivers, they should be first on that list

>>>learn how to drive and get in the right lane

I wish people would get tickets for hanging out in the passing lane

I have a cousin who's bi-polar and has gone off on others in road rage incidents while his then 7-12 year old kids were in the car.  I suspect they've grown used to it in some respects, but not in others (and will still have "confused looks on their faces").

It's interesting to see how far people will go in support of their "being right".  At what point does that dude take a deep breath and say something like "I was wrong in in the first place"?

I hate people who don't get over from the far left passing lane!

I don't care how far over the speed limit you are going.

You don't pay for my speeding tickets!

If I come up behind you get the Fuck over!

The worst are the fuckers who want to pass a car going the same speed.

Either slow down and get over or speed the Fuck up already!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel better thankssmiley

Most likely to have a concealed carry permit also.

There are many weasels out on the roads.  My tendency is to drive slowly and time traffic lights to save Fuel & Brakes.

Usually I'm running the 3/4 - ton HD pickup,  which is sturdy if some idiot crashes into me.

I taught driving as a youngster,  and drove Limousines.  So many miles of hazard prevention.

If some weirdo shows signs of aggressive / meth driving I'll let them go along.

No way I want to waste time talking to kops or calling insurance companies.

shocking

Hey Wisco --

There's only so much Petrol in the country,  and I'm trying to conserve the stuff.

If I see a traffic signal,  ahead in the distance,  I take my foot off the gas pedal and coast up to it.

So to the people in such a huge rush,  quit taking speed and set  your alarm clock ten minutes earlier.

My tires last longer also,  which fights Global Warming.

Three coins in the fountainhead.

If I come up behind you get the Fuck over!<<<

rolls eyes

Doesn't surprise me that Face is a cruise in the passing lane person.

Traffic here in Vermont (outside of the Burlington area) is pretty non-existent so road rage is rare. Every place has pros and cons - but road rage must suck to deal with.

Doesn't surprise me that Face is a cruise in the passing lane person<<<

You better take that back!

at least i don't have to dig my car out of the snow...

Me neither - I have an oversized two car garage.

I hear you. I drive 10 miles over the speed limit, and get over when you come up behind me, but you would be amazed at how many assholes just want to tailgate. You get over and then they drive the same speed as you only next to you, or my real favorite they pass you, then you get over behind them and they slow down to slower than you were going before and now you are stuck behind them. Happens all the time.

Don't even get me started on the people who feel they need to slow down for corners on the freeway or slow down by 10 MPH when going up hill

Hooper, how about the assholes that get in the passing lane only to drive side by side with the person in the right lane? That has got to be FOM.

>>>>>I hate Prius drivers, they should be first on that list

So, my rank rises when I drive the Prius?  I only drive that car 10% of my driving time.  I have to admit, though, that the gas-saving recommendations posted on the dash display do increase my tendency to aim for optimal fuel efficiency, which means more gradual acceleration and deceleration (I'm used to that problem from driving a 1970 VW bus).  Interestingly, stop-and-go traffic provides my best fuel-efficiency ratings.

Hooper, I almost always pass on the left (I think it's safer than sneaking up on people's right side).  Unfortunately, I rarely go over 10mph past the speed limit, so I get regular angry tailgaters in the fast lane.  I always get over to the right when it is safe to do so.  Still the anger of some behind me is palpable.  So, I'd like to apologize to those whom I cause distress.

Nancy, I hear what you're saying.  Though, it may be understandable why the other driver was pretty rigid about the situation.

johnny is not a typical prius driver.

they normally haul ass, cut people off and are generally dickish.

Hybrid Driver.jpg

Googles, I bought an Accord Hybrid over 2 yrs ago.  Have 70,000 miles on it already.  Did have 2 Prius's prior to that.

Hey Johnny, I had a 70 bus also.

El Nino, I hear exactly what you are talking about! Like I said, if I'm doing 80 mph and somebody wants to pass me no big deal. I gladly get over.

But like you said, I get over going the same speed and now the guy riding my ass pulls up next to me and doesn't pass. I don't get it?

Or when someone gets over so you can pass then they go faster so you can't pass. If they would have gone that speed in the first place there would be no problem.

Skyjunk.....that drives me absolutely nuts!!!!!!!! Lol. I just don't get it?

JohnnyD...............that's the way you should drive. I have no problem with those who only go so fast. Always pass on the left!!!!!! You get over when faster traffic is behind you when it's safe to do so. Just please don't take 20 miles to do so, lol. Although depending where you live I guess plays a big part as well. As mentioned above by someone.

Even though I do get annoyed by these practices I keep my cool and don't really rage at all. Finger here, finger there once in a while....haha. I never use my vehicle to try and prove a point. That's normally why I flip the bird because someone is using their vehicle as a weapon more of less.

My friend was in law enforcement for 30 years. His son got into trouble once and had to attend an

anger management class, and his dad had to go with him.

The teacher started by saying, "ok we're going to teach you some tools to use to control your anger.

Now let's say someone cuts you off in traffic; they don't hit you or anything but they cut you off. What would you do?"

She points to a guy about 18 and he says, "I'd fuckin kill 'em."

Dude clearly needed a few more classes.

This is why Prius drivers make the top of my list! Pick up drivers are second, they love to plug up the left lane and do 67-72 instead of 80+.

Nobody should be driving 80+.

is is a real motherfuckin thing

I think it is mandatory for Vermont Prius drivers to go a solid ten below the speed limit.

I have noticed people flipped me off much more since I got a Prius. Something about my car really pisses some folks off. I just ignore them and save my precious gas ( I'm up to 70 mpg!)...I still say the most dangerous drivers are the work trucks, always at least15 miles over the speed limits and running lights... The only thing that pisses me off on the road is the folks that cross the yellow lines on Highway 1. That shit is life threatening and everyone needs to knock it off, yes even if there is a bicycle you must stay in your lane unless you are 100% sure I'm not coming in the other lane...

Btw yesterday I saw a big rig run a red light to beat an ambulance thru the intersection. Ambulance had to lock up its brakes to avoid the rig, so fucking nuts...

>>I think it is mandatory for Vermont Prius drivers to go a solid ten below the speed limit.

I'm not sure about that. I get passed by Prius drivers on 89 all the time. I drive 75 - they drive 80+.

I think they do it to impress the other drivers - "you may think my electric hybrid is slow, but watch this."

Maybe that's just up here between Montpelier and Burlington?

Who knows?

sounds like in this situation the right thing to do would have been for the guy to back up - however, at least in CA, not sure about federally, the traffic code for narrow rural roads with only enough space for one car on an incline is that the driver who would be backing uphill should back up, since when backing uphill many vehicles will have more control and traction than a vehicle backing downhill, especially for larger trucks.

sounds like the guy was being a douche - but according to the rules of the road, at least in CA, you(the driver heading downhill/backing uphill) are the one who is supposed to be backing up in that type of situation.
