Rob Eaton thinking about calling it quits with DSO

Forums:

IMG_0462.JPGFacebook is weird and oversharing is a real thing.

Hope things work out for him.  Sounds like he's going through a rough patch.  Vibes to all the DSO guys and gal.

Could be JeffGs big break though.

Sorts sad dude doesn't have retirement money considering how long and hard these guys tour.

Maybe he'll start a ratdog orchestra

you should apply hoover

I do look good in nuthuggers

Not to invalidate this at all cause I know absolutely nothing about nothing but he's said he wants to get off the bus before.

Hard to imagine it happening but I've always though Eaton was a pretty fucking cool guy and always wish him the best.

Anway...came on here to let you know that Mr. Miller released a big JGB show to the world a few days ago (Saddlerack '82)-- get on it for those Garcia lovers out there:

Word is, he's replacing Weir in Dead&Co since he is an objectively better Bobby at this point.

Robby and The Midnights. Coming soon.

I'm guessing the sudden passing of Matt Reynolds has been especially hard on Rob, as his is one of the longest tenures of the current line-up.  After DSO's Summer Tour ends on August 19th in Black Mountain, North Carolina, they have nothing else scheduled except one date on October 27th at the Hangtown Music Festival in Placerville, California, and the Jam In The Sand dates in Jamaica in late January.

He's done a real good service to the music, it will be interesting to see where his path goes.  I suppose if he wanted to perpetuate mimicing Bobby, he'll need to record a solo album in L.A. with a bunch of session musicians while on hiatus.  Maybe start up a Kingfish cover band too.  He could recruit Michael Kang and call it Kangfish.

Best of luck to you going forward, Rob.

Will Headband join the DNB?

Honest question, can he be successfully replaced?

There are lots of Fake Bobby's, but will another keep the band at the level they've been?

He was kind of the leader of that band, wasn't he?

Pls focus on Felina's link.

Some of y'all can't see forest from the trees.

And Eaton is fine.

His commitment to the cause is eternal.

Last time I saw them play, it was pretty obvious there's a lack of inspiration compared to precinshows I attended. There was no spark musically. They were just going through the motions. It happens with bands playing original songs all the time, I can only imagine it's even easier to lose that spark in a tribute band. When you look what they were able to as a tribute band it is pretty remarkable. Hope it works out for him.

i would say he definitely can not be replaced. Nobody can Bobby like Robby.

What kind of innie are you, Rando?

We need credentials.

He would be hard to replace, but I can understand his desire to move on.  He's always had other things going on and I would think that full time touring is keeping him from pursuing other interests.  But as he himself says, how to replace that income?  I imagine that they all make a pretty decent living at this point.

Funny how this mirrors the Dead's need/desire top take time off back in the day.

He's thinking about quitting because he thinks he's a shitty father.

Send him a DM, suggesting his baby mama support him and the kids? He could then Vivalazone all day, most days, er..., I mean be a great father.

IMG_0388_0.JPG

Skipper, does your baby mama like pleasure cruising?

What does she like to listen to on a cruise? DSO or PLF?

I follow Rob Eaton on facebook

Tommy from The Volunteers/Zen Tricksters could do the job and has been playing w Mattson for over 3 decades

Fake-Fake Bobby?

Great choice Eggman.  Tom could certainly handle it without a problem.  But then aren't you back to basically the Zen tricksters?

I also find it a little sad that he doesn't have any sort of retirement to fall back on.. has to continue touring to survive.

... all the Best to Rob.

Anyone thinking the DSOers are rich and set for life need to check the economic realities of the music industry.

Read David Crosby's twitter as a start. If he's got no retirement set, why would Eaton?

He probably feels like killing himself whenever they play Walkin Blues. Who wouldn't.

I'd guess anyone who toured non-stop as a taper either had a trust-fund, or sold drugs (or both).

Don't think that they are rich, but given the hall sizes that they play and sell well at I would assume that they make a healthy living.

Crosby should hit up the Moonalices

>>>Read David Crosby's twitter as a start. If he's got no retirement set, why would Eaton?

Because, cocaine?

>>Anyone thinking the DSOers are rich and set for life need to check the economic realities of the music industry.

You don't have to be rich to have set aside some money along the way to retire.

I can think of a few musicians I know who tour for a living making over 100,000 a year playing shows.  There are plenty of people who carve out a nice living for themselves on that salary and are able to set themselves up for a nice retirement.

Gravy should we feel bad for a guy who has probably made tens of millions of dollars but pissed it all away? Eaton is a working musician. Crosby is a rock star with publishing. Big difference.

David Crosby career doesn't measure up to Eaton's.

Sounds like a Mid life crises

Good point Fitzman.I met Tommy & Jennifer in High School before they even liked The Grateful Dead.

gtrain firing cheap shots across the bow...

And wrong as usual.  I've been working as well as being the primary care giver since we moved back to CA.

Skipper just can't seem to get anything right.

not sure why stay at home dad is a put down...?

i would have gladly stayed at home if i could have.

It's called busting balls lunchbox. Nobody really gives a shit what Hoover does or doesn't do.

When someone tries to use it as a put down they're probably a misogynist or an asshole or both.

You OK, jonas?

Never seen you so lashy-outy. I will be OK either way.

'sup turts.

I'm glad you'll be OK Ned.  That's all that matters.

>>>> also find it a little sad that he doesn't have any sort of retirement to fall back on

Where does it say he wants to retire?

He's is his 50's?

Smart enough not to tap his retirement savings while he can still earn?

Poor guy

>>It's called busting balls lunchbox

'zactly. Don't know why Timmy acts like he has Asperger's every time it's done back to him.

Honestly don't give $.02 what you do/don't do. Hand modeling, I think?

The ball bustin crew

hello nedb

ball busting...hmm ok

 yeah...sure it is.

>>> I'm glad you'll be OK Ned.  That's all that matters.

Please don't feed the squirrels, or my narcissism.

>ball busting...hmm ok

 yeah...sure it is.

Lol.  Ok, so what is it then?

Ned -- do you like nuts?

>Ok, so what is it then?<

a low form of passive aggressive trolling...

Why is it so hard for some zoners to understand the term passive aggressive?

And for the record I've never trolled anyone on this board. Sometimes I respond to asshat comments but trolling,, nah.

"some zoners" = passive aggressive.

Since I was responding to you I would have thought that you would have gotten it.

Ok:  Lunchbox doesn't quite get the concept of passive aggression.

stop fucking trolling me jonas bros.

Can I still be passive aggressive with you?

sure.

Ok. Cool

e.g. Sure. OK cool. I was only joking. Thought you had the google.

I just like pointing out the stupid shit people do.   --Timmy Hoover

The Skipper had himself another bad showing in a Viva thread.

Dif'rent metrics.

Much amusement herein. Thank you, some people.

The Avenger Crew assembles to protect their own..guess JR missed the bat signal...

Gold from Jimbee

Yup

Maybe Eaton and JK have a plan for an new original band.

>> Sometimes I respond to asshat comments

I am doing this right now. Pretty meta.

Hello folks. Who is this jimbee guy? I get a dead and co t shirt vibe from him.

John K is available... 2 JERRYS.  FUCK BOBBY.  LOL

Has Eaton and JK ever played together since the break up?

Could they ever work together again?

^should be pondered by no one, ever.

It would be a little ironic if ChiKev had a beef with the drummers and opened his own sausage joint on the northwest side of Chicago.

>> ChiKev

I love that this joke is still going so many years later

Who is Jimbee? There may be a bumber sticker in that! winkI wouldn't have one because I know Jimbee from way back!

pretty busy schedule ahead of them...

and i am only ok on brown eyed women and jack a roe...

http://www.darkstarorchestra.net/tour-dates

>>>pretty busy schedule ahead of them<<<

No shit, and people wonder why the guy wants to take some time off.

I mean, how many times without a break can one sing El Paso, Me & My Uncle & Victim Or The Crime?

Where's Vorty when we need him?

They can't afford to take a break because they're buying a new bus winkyes

^The invisible hand

That was a lot of oversharing by Eaton on FB.  To the point it made me uncomfortable to read.

I concur, JR. That stuff is best left for late night drunk journaling.

JR - perhaps you purged your archives, I am a figment of your past....

>>>perhaps you purged your archives, I am a figment of your past....

Mwuahahahahahahahaha!!! devildevildevil

Someone who plays in a band like DSO can certainly make enough money to save for retirement... as long as they don't blow their money with frivolous spending. It is definitely good to be smart with your money, to save and invest wisely, and to keep your spending within reasonable limits. I firmly believe in living BELOW my means, which means I have more money left over for the rainy days.

Rob Easton can't pay his bills with his income from DSO? I was under the impression that the gig(s) payed well.

i blame Vorty for giving away so many freebies ;)

I'm pretty sure he said he would have to figure out how to pay the bills IF he quit DSO.

Implying that DSO pays a living wage, at least.

Gotcha. So I'm guessing he's not making a million dollars a year playing with DSO. And probably wasn't good at saving or investing $$. Good luck to him in whatever job he moves onto next.

>>>. And probably wasn't good at saving or investing $$.

Stay in school, Rob.

About 120 DSO shows in the last year x $25 per ticket min. x say 500 tix sold per show = over $1M gross. I would estimate each band member gets about $100K a year after promoter/venue/travel expenses..

He never implied that he couldn't pay his bills.  He wants time off from the road, and when I see that schedule I understand why.

500 tix? I thought they played larger venues, maybe that was in the past. If he's retiring from the band, or even considering it, I wish him and his bandmates well. I'm sure they will be able to replace him, and continue to sell tickets without Eaton. Maybe they should change their name to DCO?

I still think they did Jar Jar wrong by not inviting him back after Futhur called it quits. I know some folks say he didn't want back in but he is begging for living room concert gigs on Facebook now. Im sure he'd be happy to be back on the corpse humping express.

They do play some larger venues - I was going for a minimum.

Plus, 500 is about right for most of the times I've seen them.

Don't think Mattson wants to give his job back to JK.

if JK could pull off a fake John Mayer, they could make it work.

aren't you guys tired of franklin's tower?

Sounds like Eaton sure  is.

Hopefully he doesn't pull a Kimock "Maggie's Farm" move and bail mid-tour. That said, DSO does a pretty great JGB.

I haven't heard one way or another if he's splitting or not....

Easton is already on the road to the next phase.

- But I'm sure the show will go on.
