He would have given them his card, they would have done an authorization to make sure he was approved for that amount, and he would have signed the tab: just like a smaller transaction. The behind the scenes stuff is more complicated: the funds would likely have been held until some further verification was done. A call to the merchant for specific details about the charges and another to the cardholder would be fairly standard. Visa and Mastercard offer high limit cards, but I think the Amex Black answer is probably correct. They have a high "baller" factor.
