My first GD show was 37 years ago today.

Rest In Peace sir.

What a bummer. Thank you Robert Hunter for your lyrics which make up the fabric of my life. RIP

Hunter's colorful and moving lyrics are what really set the Grateful Dead apart from all the jambands that followed.  Nothing like it.

RIP

It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there

<<gut punch>>

Farewell, Promontory Rider.

Thanks for sharing your brilliant mind, heart and soul with us...

You’ll be missed and never forgotten.

Thank you for a real good time indeed. RIP legend.

I was just wondering in the past week when this would happen, for some reason it just seemed imminent.

Words simply can't express how much this mans words meant to me.  I was honored to meet him a few times, always gracious and generous with his time.

"some great reading: Damn I miss those posts"

Yep, his section on Deadnet was by far the most interesting place to be.

RIP

So sad

The guy created a whole new world for us through his lyrics.

RIP Hunter, you gave more than you’ll ever know .

Damn, a truly iconic composer, who wrote songs for sooooo many people, damn!

Glad I got to see him perform live, was a real treat!

If there's any doubts, here's a partial discography;

Hunter was the fucking man, period. RIP

Goodbye Robert.

May the four winds blow you safely home.

The man had a way with words

Jerry, my friend,
you've done it again,
even in your silence
the familiar pressure
comes to bear, demanding
I pull words from the air
with only this morning
and part of the afternoon
to compose an ode worthy
of one so particular
about every turn of phrase,
demanding it hit home
in a thousand ways
before making it his own,
and this I can't do alone.
Now that the singer is gone,
where shall I go for the song?

Without your melody and taste
to lend an attitude of grace
a lyric is an orphan thing,
a hive with neither honey's taste
nor power to truly sting.

What choice have I but to dare and
call your muse who thought to rest
out of the thin blue air
that out of the field of shared time,
a line or two might chance to shine --

As ever when we called,
in hope if not in words,
the muse descends.

How should she desert us now?
Scars of battle on her brow,
bedraggled feathers on her wings,
and yet she sings, she sings!

May she bear thee to thy rest,
the ancient bower of flowers
beyond the solitude of days,
the tyranny of hours--
the wreath of shining laurel lie
upon your shaggy head
bestowing power to play the lyre
to legions of the dead

If some part of that music
is heard in deepest dream,
or on some breeze of Summer
a snatch of golden theme,
we'll know you live inside us
with love that never parts
our good old Jack O'Diamonds
become the King of Hearts.

I feel your silent laughter
at sentiments so bold
that dare to step across the line
to tell what must be told,
so I'll just say I love you,
which I never said before
and let it go at that old friend
the rest you may ignore

No words. Just music. broken heart

crying

RIP. Huge loss

Lady Simplicity
Bright like a ribbon bow
Everything everywhere
Just for the show
Believe it implicitly
Love is tranquillity
If you don't know that
Then nothing is known

.

Rest In Peace Robert Hunter,

I too was blessed to see him a handful of times and always

enjoyed his shows and his own arrangements of the songs, so raw!,

and his always high energy Promontory Rider!!

My last full solo show with him was that Wetlands closing show just days after 911

What a beautiful and strange performance that was, haunting really.

Had to cross the below the frozen zone line and get the car/trunk searched

to get to that show.....

I wish I had words but they are all coming out as tears<<<

Thank you Robert for your words and the life you lived.

You created the scene you described and left it for the better.

Peace on you.

one of the greatest songsmiths bestowed upon several generations.

Bless his legacy

Now and forever one of the Grateful Dead.

I am heartbroken. Last night we lost Robert Hunter. As much as anyone, he defined in his words what it meant to be the Grateful Dead. His lyrics, ranging from old border ballads to urban legend, western narratives and beyond, brought into sharp focus what was implicit in our music. A case in point is “Box of Rain” - he heard so deeply what my feelings were when I composed the music, feelings I didn’t know I had until I read his lyrics. The lyrics he wrote for Jerry likewise tapped into the very essence of Jerry’s heart and soul - drawing forth the music living there. Significantly, the very first lyric Robert wrote for us was “Dark Star”, which became the definitive GD exploratory vehicle.
So fare thee well, rh, when my time comes I’ll be looking for you and Jer out there in the transitive nightfall of diamonds.
Love,
Phil

his songs will fill the air for many years to come.

RIP to our song-smith.

RIP to our song-smith.

Fare you well, fare you well.

I love you more than words can tell.

broken heart

I will carry his words until my own last breath. Fare thee well...

"But listen for my voices
The ones that never die...."

Rest in Peace,  your life touched many others.

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

One time for the bard...tyrh

Four in the morning, last shakes of night
Last time I checked, babe, nothing was right
Words I was reading slipped off the page
Left me here singing like a bird in a cage

Crickets are humming a sixty bar blues
Leave me here hanging by the skin of my shoes
Coversation just gets in my ear
Yes I love you but I don't want to hear

I want a Home on the Range
Where the buffalo roam (note 1)
And the people aren't strange

Bring on the moonlight, bring on the dawn
Hard to believe in what's going on
The frogs are in A flat, the wind is in D
Rollin', rollin' rollin' like a tumbleweed

Twenty parts reason, twenty parts rhyme
Throw 'em in a shaker, add a dash of lime (note 2)
If it comes out like a song, that's all right with me
If it sounds sweet and strong, save the recipe

I want a Home on the Range
Where the buffalo roam (note 1)
And the people don't change

Salt Lake City with the girl of my dreams
Everything busting apart at the seams
Give me your troubles, your sadness and woe
And send them off to Utah on the six-five-O

Too long in this condition, got sense enough to know
The sooner I get out of here, the smoother things will go
Don't know what holds me, it sure ain't lack of nerve
Gotta get back on the range, this ain't what I deserve

I want a Home on the Range
Where the buffalo roam (note 1)
And love ain't strange

Went up on the mountain, looked down upon the plain (note 3)
Everybody running round just like they was insane
Stumbled down the mountain, my broken heart for brake
This isn't what I planned on, there must be some mistake

I used to want a million, don't want it any more
Used to walk on crutches, my balance was so poor
I can stand as steady as anyone you meet
All I need's a piece of land that's flat beneath my feet

I want a Home on the Range
Where buffalo wander
And a dollar ain't change

Drinkin' like a demon, payin' with my brain
Watchin' all-night movies while my life goes down the drain
Love is a commodity you purchase on the street
Wake up in the morning feelin' like a piece of meat

My values are in storage, the ticket's on the mirror
I don't recall exactly how I ended up down here
Won't even try to figure the damage to my heart
Just roll on back where I belong and make a brand new start

I want a Home on the Range
Where buffalo wander
And people don't change

No more collaborations with Phil and David and others.   A very sad day.   RIP. You showed the light to so many.

and music

Sad. RIP Robert.

I’m going to jam with my friends tonight and we’ll play every Hunter song we know.  No words.  RIP

Amazing... that his words could have such an enormous lasting, emotional impact.

His lyrics helped me personally through some rough spots and countless joyous ones too.  And they were there too, when I just wanted to ponder this beautiful life.  RIP Mr. Hunter.

Can't overstate how much his words have meant to me- RIP RCH

“Let it be known,
there is a fountain
that was not made
by the hands of men.” ~ Robert Hunter

I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut, my heart is heavy and can’t hold back tears even though I have a work day to get through. This is every bit as emotional for me as when Jerry Garcia passed away, for who, after all, was the voice of the Grateful Dead’s wondrous, cosmic, mystical and often hilarious musical tales and characters? Jerry would be the first to tell you, it was Robert Hunter. Hunter was the wind behind the sails of the glorious juggernaut called the Grateful Dead. A Ship Of Fools that I gladly hopped aboard over 40 years ago and whose lyrics have guided me, inspired me, assuaged my Judeo-Christian Biblical roots and transcended them with the fire of imagination and mystery. Most of all, Hunter’s words grounded me when I might have “had too much too fast”, amongst other scenarios, both challenging and mundane. Ethereal, trippy and whimsical are just a few words that come to mind as I reflect on Robert Hunter’s lyrics.  His poetry went far beyond The Dead, as he co-wrote with David Nelson, Bob Dylan , Michael Falzarano, Rob Barraco, Little Feat, and a host of other songwriters. Robert’s work will last for ages to come, as it is timeless, exploring universal themes of love, death and war, while developing unforgettable characters, ranging from heroes to losers to those who are either comical or just down on their luck. I had the good fortune of meeting Robert and interviewing him in 1979, and all I could think then was “Wow, I’m shaking the hand of the man who wrote “Dark Star”...At least more recently, I got to see him sing a verse of ‘Born To Run’ by The Boss as pictured here at City Winery...

Fare Thee Well, Robert, we love you more than words can tell...”May The Four Winds Blow You Safely Home...”

I think Garcia Band did a version of Promontory Rider somewhere in 78? does anyone have this detail?

Oops. The 3/1/1978 Promontory Rider was already posted

Does anyone have the clip from Long Strange Trip where the interviewer asks Hunter about Dark Star? An annoyed Hunter rattled off a lyric and was like "what do you think it means, it's obvious" or something to that effect. I've looked for this in the past but had no luck.

I saw Robert Hunter band, NRPS, and Jerry Band spring of 78 on Long Island. Show started at 8 and ended at 4-5am on a Sunday night. Good times....

This one hits hard.  Spinning my vinyl Jack O'Roses tonight.  It's brought me to tears a few times and it's not even done.  His songs, his poetry, his music are part of who I am and what I know.

He was one of the good ones, while also being one of the greatest.

Thanks, RH.

My Robert Hunter story.....

I moved to San Francisco in Sept. 1976 to attend the College for the Recording Arts.  After I was there for about a week I saw an add for a club that was closing down and it said that Hunter would be one of the people performing on the last night.  I can't remember the name of the club, it was on Market Street just north of the freeway overpass on the right side of the street as you headed toward the Castro.  Really small place, when I arrived there were only about 25-30 people there.  I was standing against a wall watching someone perform and struck up a conversation with a guy standing next to me.  We chatted for about ten minutes and when the person that was on stage ended the MC got up to announce the next performer.  He said "Please welcome Robert Hunter" and the guy I was talking to said "Gotta go" and hopped up on stage.  Mind suitably blown.  Back then there were very few pictures of him around so even though I had both of his albums I had no idea what he looked like.

I was fortunate to see him many times after that, usually at the Shady Grove on Haight Street, including during his stint with Road Hog (my personal favorite band of his, ragged but right)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/dgans/538305123

as well as that band he played with right after that (can't for the life of me recall what they were called, one word name?, but someone will fill that in I'm sure) that was technically better but never hit me the way I like.

He was incredibly accessible in the early days of Deadnet, answering e-mails and posting regularly.

When I got married we placed two of his lines in our wedding program and when he did his poetry tour in the mid 90's we got him so sign one of them

Hunter wedding program.jpg

I don't believe in an afterlife, but it's nice to think that these two are creating together again....

I love this quote

In a 2013 interview with Reuters, he recalled his last conversation with Mr. Garcia, who died in 1995. “He said, ‘I just wanted to tell you that your songs never stuck in my throat,’” Mr. Hunter said.

We were so lucky to share in their special union.  heart

Thom I believe the band was Comfort.

Turtle, thanks for posting those lists.

Truly mind blowing.

His interview with Terry Gross is on Fresh Air today

Comfort it was!  They had a good guitar player and female singer.  More competent than Road Hog but not as much fun IMHO.

Thanks for jogging the memory.  I could find nary a trace of it in the interwebs without the name.

While I was searching for a Hunter memorial post by Kreutzman that I saw yesterday, I found this new story that includes Billy's words as well as memorials from Trey, Oteil, Mayernaise and others...

This is a good piece Piotr Orlov did for NPR today:

I'll probably still talk to Hunter for a while too.

The best obituary I've read is from the Associated Press. The writer had to know the Dead songbook pretty well. He nailed the description of Hunter's lyrical prowess.

When he did attend the group’s concerts, he was content to either stand to the side of the stage or, better yet, sit anonymously in the audience. It was in the latter location, he told The Associated Press in 2006, that he received his greatest songwriting compliment, from a man who had no idea who he was.

“He turned to me during ‘Cumberland Blues’ and said, ‘I wonder what the guy who wrote that song a hundred years ago would think if he knew the Grateful Dead was doing it,’” he recalled, referencing the colorful tale of hardscrabble American miners.

Other of Hunter’s most memorable Grateful Dead songs include “It Must Have Been the Roses,” ″Terrapin Station,” ″The Days Between,” ″Brown Eyed Women,” ″Jack Straw, “Friend of the Devil,” ″Box of Rain,” ″Uncle John’s Band” and “Black Muddy River.”

Although the man who spoke to him during “Cumberland Blues” couldn’t know it, he had perfectly captured Hunter’s songwriting brilliance contained in all of those songs: the ability to craft lyrics that sounded so timeless that listeners were certain they had heard them before. It was a skill he matched seamlessly with a boundless knowledge of subjects running the gamut from classic literature to street life, which in turn allowed him to write authoritatively about everyone from card sharks and hustlers to poor dirt farmers and free-spirited lovers.

All of those stories he seasoned with a poetic skill some would say rivaled even that of Bob Dylan, with whom he sometimes collaborated.

How lucky we were to have him in our lives. His words and music influenced so many for the better. And the nice thing, they will continue to. What a great legacy.

Didn't see this until now, but there can be no mistake as to what this was about in light of Bobby's recent quote about his setlist this past Wed:

“I thought it’d be appropriate to do all songs by Robert Hunter tonight, with one exception,” Weir said before the tune. “You see Bob Hunter was a huge fan of Scottish folk ballads and had he been around, oh, 500 years ago he’d have written this one too.”

Mr. Hunter was born Robert Burns on June 23, 1941, in Arroyo Grande, Calif., and took his stepfather’s last name. (Details about his early life are sketchy.) He spent his senior year of high school on Long Island but was soon back on the West Coast and in the Stanford experiment.

Dear DNB Family,

We are so sad to hear the news of the passing of Robert Hunter. We’ve lost one of the most prolific wordsmiths of our time. Many of the phrases that he coined in song have become part of the vernacular of our language. David and he collaborated on many songs throughout the years, that have been staples of the DNB catalog. We just recently mixed and mastered one of his last collaborations with David called, “Movin’ Right Along”, that we’ve been in process of releasing as a single. Be on the lookout for that and another Hunter/Nelson collaboration, “Man Overboard”, to be released in the coming months. We extend our condolences to Bob’s family, friends and extensive network of fans. His memory will carry on through all of the wonderful lyrics he’s penned. Keep on truckin’ on, Bob. Let there be songs to fill the air…

I've spent days going through my old external hard drives trying to find my rare and ancient (1979) Interview with Robert Hunter. Success! It wasn't easy to find, but I will present it to you all this Saturday on WFDU's 'Morning Dew' @ 10:00pm (EST) on 89.1 FM ~ Streaming live at wfdu.fm ~ I am so delighted to have found this treasure!

Look forward to hearing!

I'll tell ya, Willytee , I did not get to that Closing of Wetlands show, despite my friends calling me to cajole me into going before they even knew Hunter was coming that night. I just couldn't deal with the commute because shortly after 9/11 the Holland Tunnel was closed for weeks and it would've meant a 2 hour commute via the Lincoln Tunnel and I had to work at 6 am the next day. Wish I had called in sick but I'm glad it happened!

Willytee, you may be interested to know I have a beautiful Soundboard recording of Hunter's 32 miniute set that night. It was recorded by my dear, departed friend David Nolan (RIP) who was  DJ @ The Wetlands for all 13 years of it's existence and this was the Club's last night.

I will Broadcast this rare piece of magic on my show tonight on WFDU's 'Morning Dew' show, 10:00 pm - 1:00 AM (EST) on 89.1 FM, also Streaming globally on http://www.wfdu.fm and available on the Archives after Broadcast.

Enjoy.

My good friend from Madrid, Spain, Oscar Ruiz,  celebrates his 10th Anniversary Hosting 'Estacion Terrapin' , his all Spanish speaking Grateful Dead/Americana Roots Radio show on HomegrownRadioNJ.org by featuring all Robert Hunter songs performed and recorded by artists other than the Grateful Dead. A great listen and an interesting perspective, to be sure. Plus you can brush up on your Espanol!
