Roy Ayers RIP

Forums:

A long and storied career. His late 60s stuff is peak, and he moved deftly into the sample-rich R&B genre with style.

I'll be revisiting his Atlantic post-bop and soul-jazz stuff, but I also love his stuff with Herbie Mann. This whole thing smokes, but skip to 6:30 to hear Ayers going off (say what you will about Mann, but the guy stacked his bands, here with Sonny Sharrock and Larry Coryell on guitar):

RIp. I was fortunate to see him opening for Patti Smith and Grateful Dead at UMass 79. Interesting day of music.

I came across this a while back pulling up Fela Kuti
