I went to Golden Gate Fields in the East Bay with the wife & others. The Derby is the only bet I make all year as it is the only one that pays. I have been doing it for 40 years. I have been watching Always Dreaming & like his performance, trainer, jockey, pedigree, & post position. I wanted a safe bet. I have bet & won a few exotics in the past but I have lost more of them than I have won. I decided just to put $500 on Always Dreaming to win but when I saw how sloppy Churchill Downs was I decided to just put $450 on him to show. He won & lucky for me 2 long shots came in 2nd & 3rd (33-1 odds & 40-1 odds). This helped the peri-mutual payout.
Always Dreaming paid $5.80 to show. I had 225 $2 tickets so my payday was $1,305 for a profit of $855.
Seemed like always dreamin had the perfect set up and therefore it became a fairly boring derby. Fast starter + wet track + good gate position + main competitors having bad gate position....it worked out well. Not a speck of mud on that horse or jockey.
That was the first thing I notice at the finish line. The rest of the horses and jockeys were drenched in mud and AD/jockey looked like they had just come off the showroom floor.
