Ryan Adams

Forums:

I don't know how I missed this given the flame threads he generated pissing off Phil phans but he was beefing with Father John Misty when he ran out of gas with Phil-heads

Apparently he was buttsore that FJM made fun of him covering Taylor Swift's 1989 and himself decided to cover RA cover of a TS song from the album

RA throws a hissy fit on twitter https://pitchfork.com/news/ryan-adams-calls-father-john-misty-the-most-s...

FJM responds:

Father John Misty is a great name for a cult leader! wink

Funny thing, I'm seeing him on Sunday for a sold out show in a legendary ballroom.

I don't Ryan Adams often

but when I do, it's whiskeytown covering Tom T. Hall

I saw him three weeks ago, and also last year. They were both good shows.

He's the only artist who can perform solo and hold my attention over hours, and he often performs for over three hours, singing all those slow sad songs, but I never get bored.

All these years later he's still a bizarre dude, but he still sings like an angel and writes great songs.

i got "heartbreaker" for christmas from my parents when i was 13 or 14, about 6 years before i got into the dead. these days 6 years feels like nothing but back then it was like half a lifetime.

he's really bad at the internet.

he should get a girlfriend, or a cat or a japanese robot.

I thought maybe he was going for a musician version of Andy Kaufman but Father John Misty is way better at it

Have fun Hedspace! Don't forget to yell out Summer of 69! laughheart

So grateful for Phil getting me into Ryan. And thankful for that whole period getting me back into acid.
It led to so many incredible shows with the Cardinals in the mid/late 2000's decade.
I have never heard house-sound in a room as good as that band got.
Ryan has always been a messy genius.
I would still love to hear the album that Ryan & Phil recorded at Electric Ladyland studios. I wonder if it will ever see the light of day?

>>>Ryan has always been a messy genius<<<

That's a very good description of Ryan Adams.

>>>So grateful for Phil getting me into Ryan<<<

I feel exactly the same way. Before Phil the only thing I knew about Ryan was that all my friends who worked at the SF Fillmore hated him, because he once had a tantrum during a sound check there and threw a faulty monitor off the stage, making a big gash in the floor that was expensive and a hassle to fix.

The first time I saw him was with Phil at the Fillmore in December of '05 and I didn't know who he was. I actually thought maybe he was Phil's son, but no matter, because unlike many I thought that goofy looking kid was fucking amazing, and that show remains one of my all-time favorite Phil & Friends shows.

Soon after I saw him play a solo show at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF, a show where he was almost too wasted to perform at the start, but a show that totally mesmerized me, a show where I became a fan.

It was also a show where along with a drummer Phil sat in for the encore that was basically bad, a day before the infamous Phil/Ryan stealth show at 12 Galaxies in SF that was possibly the worst live performance of all time, a show I wisely skipped.

For a variety of reasons it's easy enough to hate Ryan Adams, but it's also really not that hard to love him.

Separating the art from the artist is a very good and important skill to learn.

Aw, well said. You got it.

Ryan Adams is a big idiot tool with mental health problems and is off putting about cats but I really love his albums

His music is great, I don't think anyone hates his art. He's probably right about FJM but I don't think FJM minds.
