Ryan Adams & The Cardinals: Alive Volume I

Free dropped album for free in the Pax-Am shop.

I've been looking forward to seeing Ryan electric again and was wondering what this version of The Cardinals was going to sound like. Listening to this free album has wet my wistle and my show in Brooklyn can't come quickly enough.

Mr. Adams made an announcement on his socials yesterday that these are the last Cardinal shows of this year and there will be no Cardinals shows next year. He also announced that the remaining shows will be a minimum of 3 hrs long.

Maybe this has been posted somewhere already, but who is in this version of the band?

I'll be seeing the San Jose show. Not the best venue, but lots of good memories in that old hall and it's close to home, which in my aging years makes a bigger difference than it used to.

The current members of The Cardinals are

Ryan Adams
Brad Pemberton
Chris Stills

I've Lost Interest In The Guy as His Music Has Become Quite Boring

During the first days when I started to work at Terrapin Crossroads up in the office was a painting leaning against the wall, a large painting maybe 4 1/2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. I was told it was painted by Ryan, given to Phil, and labeled as a self portrait. As my final days approached, I cleaned out the office. The painting was still there, all those years later. I asked if I could have it and the answer was yes. It hangs in my studio space alongside the TXR sign and the Terrapin Taps sign. I had no idea he painted, googled it once or twice without much luck.

This isn't your older brothers RA and the Cardinals. Sure miss Neal and would loved to have seen Jon back with this arrangement, but the songs are being jammed out, which is so refreshing. Each tune seems to be at least double the length and flows like currents over a riverbed. Hope he tours with them again super soon.

Pictures Peak, or it didn't happen.

Damn it Tom I tried. The picture keeps showing up sideways.  I'll try again. It's not pretty but if you look hard you might see a guy in a jean jacket.

Christ, it's 2023 and I'm still having trouble posting a pic on the Zone. I texted it to you.

Not sure I can get past his past behavior ... Cat Stevens, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Mike Love are all also in a similar camp

For real, fuck that guy.

Nice for the fans that have stuck with him if he's finally decided to start performing decent music again but it's too little, too late for me.

Will be seeing him at Red Rocks in October (yikes).

It's understandable why many have turned their backs on him, but personally I try to not be so jumpy with judgements, especially of people I don't know.

I don't know all the sordid Cryin' Ryan details, but the dude's been skeevy in his personal life? Good thing I don't have to interact with him personally. And if he broke laws, that's what the judicial system is for.

Overall, I'm pretty good at separating the artist from the art, which is really fortunate, because otherwise, especially in these times of constant (and often inaccurate and usually incomplete) information, I would have a hard time finding much to do.

As the legendary JWood would often say...

YMMV.

Saw Ryan and the new Cardinals in Reading, PA last night.  2 hour 55 minute set - no break. He still got it.  Lots of funny stage banter as well.  Best $39.50 I've spent recently.......

Go see them if possible yes

I hear ya, E. He lost me along the way too.
But I have gone back & tried. Saw a solo show that wasn't very inspiring.
The a couple yrs later one that was better.
But listening to this new Cardinals incarnation does kinda make me want to go see one of these.

Fitzman, glad to hear your assessment.
He's playing 2 nights in Portsmouth, NH at a great little hall, but at $100 each plus fees, hard to justify.
We've spent a lot on music this summer...

I think we all spend a lot on music,,,Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. It's what we do!

Some of my fondest memories with DRA and The Cardinals are with you and your bride, Cam. You are going to regret it if you don't go to at least one. You know it. I know it. If I can just do on show on this tour, so can you.

cheeky

I Think He IS A MOUTHY IDIOT !

Nice update Fitzman. Hope RA and the Cards add the Cap to their itinerary soon.

$36  Fri. Brooklyn tix on Goldstar.

Maybe other venues too.  I didn't poke around.

Hey Tony!
Yes, those were the golden years of Cards shows.
We are in for tonight, we have other plans for JerryDeathDay.

Just found some half price tix for Portsmouth, NH tonight.
What I've heard from this tour is jammy enough to interest me.
Plus it's Brad Pemberton's birthday. Hopefully it's a fun time!

I am very interested in what Cam has to say about last night's Cardinals' show. Ryan's IG feed streamed numerous portions and, to these ears, hot damn! I was reminded to when Phil Lesh said that what he loved about Ryan is that he was fearless. They showed that in spades when the opening was Iron Man>Mockingbird. Iron Man sounded like what it would have sounded if the Grateful Dead covered Black Sabbath and Jerry was in the zone. It was some damn fine stuff.

Wow, great show! If you could see through Ryan's amp stack to the right, you would see us.
We took the unoccupied front row at far Ryan side.
So mf loose and jammy and delightful. It was a very redeeming show for me.
I haven't seen any Ryan that has really compelled me in quite a while.
This was heavy, dripping, and wielding the psychedelic-astronaut-sword.
So glad we went, I'm sure this incarnation is absolutely horrifying to many of the folk-americana type Ryan fans.
Which means it's perfect for acid & dancing.

Closed with a long, improvised Doors "The End".

Thanks for the quick review, Cam and I'm glad you found some reasonable tickets. Ryan has made it clear on his social feeds that if you are a fan and looking for large numbers of his folk-americana songs then this tour IS NOT for you. Those who ignored that advise really have nothing to bitch about except their own damn selves for not believing him when he stated it. Really looking forward to Friday's show in Brooklyn. I'll be down front with a Jesse Malin t-shirt on.

is there pedal steel?

No pedal steel. This band is more along the lines of crazy horse..........as a matter of fact, the stage set up reminded me of the 1978 rust never sleeps tour.

IT'S  NOT THE CARDINALS !!   He Uses That Name To LURE Ticket Sales ! WHAT A KOOK ! no

IT'S  NOT THE CARDINALS !!   He Uses That Name To LURE Ticket Sales ! WHAT A KOOK !

I'll bite...Why is it not The Cardinals???

As for Ryan being a kook, no argument with that statement.

Friday night's show in Brooklyn was very intense, trippy and musically dense. Ryan is possibly in the best voice I have ever heard him in before. Because of his problems with Ménière's disease, there is no lights in front of the stage and Ryan and band are facially in the dark. I was lucky enough to be sitting approx 20 rows back, dead center which put me in the sweet spot for sound. Crystal clear, loud and a great soundstage which put each instrument pretty much exactly where they were located on stage. As such, there were plenty of time when I just closed my eyes and seriously listened to the layers of sound that were being played. While you could not see each member's face and hands clearly, the stage was visually interesting with a number of lighting effects and moments of billowing smoke illuminated from the back. I was impressed with how in the pocket Don Was all night. His bass lines weren't the kind that make you go wow...more just the right amount of on point playing. The keyboardist and second guitar added excellent layers to the sound that, unless you were listening closely, might not even register. Brad Pemberton's drums showed exactly why Ryan has him on stage with him. Subtle at times, bombastic at others. Just the right stuff all the time. After playing Black Sabbath's Iron Man, Ryan joked that it is his and many fan's favorite song on Cold Roses and I can't completely disagree with him. This cover is so, so good and Ryan is seriously channeling Jerry in tone and form. Later in the show the Cardinals did a killer version of Magnolia Mountain>Shout It Out Loud (Kiss)>Magnolia Mountain that sounds a lot better than it appears in writing. Overall, the setlist was heavy with songs from Cold Roses. Great harmonies all night long although it was tough to see who, besides Ryan was singing.

If you want a jammy, trippy aural extavaganza, this is the show for you. GTTS

The Real Cardinals Had 2 Members Who Have Died plus   Jon Graboff in his Outstanding Band Then

todays band

so i'll Call the Band Ryan Adams and Friends

^

The Cardinals have always had a rotating cast of members except for Ryan Adams and Brad Pemberton. The first touring lineup of Ryan Adams and the Cardinals consisted of Ryan Adams, Brad Pemberton, JP Bowersock, Catherine Popper, and Cindy Cashdollar. There are some who say that lineup is the "real" Cardinals. While I agree that the lineup you are referring to, Ryan Adams, Neal Casal, Chris Feinstein and Brad Pemberton was a mighty entity, all of the lineups, including the most current are "The Cardinals."

p.s. I didn't mention that the Brooklyn show there was a cover of Walk The Dinosaur (Was(NotWas)). Kiss, Black Sabbath I kinda expect but... lol

I forgot that Tony  thanks

Cindy Cashdollar   A Fav Of Mine sweet sounds with Ryan then.

While interpreting Ryan Adams' words can be a fool's game, it looks like he announced on his social feeds that current last dates of this tour will be the last ones ever for The Cardinals. It's a shame if that is so because I think the current line-up was just hitting it's stride and had some real potential going forward. I'm glad I got to see them while I could.and am seriousl thinking about making a sojourn to Red Rocks for the final show.

MFC!

I haven't checked into this thread in a while. He's playing electric rock and roll. Who cares what he calls his various bands? Or if it's "like" his other bands?

>>>Closed with a long, improvised Doors "The End"<<<

Woof. That sounds right down my alley, and this group sounds like it's playing music to hear in the room. I'm now even more looking forward to my chance in October.

Good is good, rough around the edges or not.
