Saved a Hummingbird this Morning

Forums:

With my bare hands.

I was over at a buddy's house for some Saturday morning backgammon, and it's a beautiful day up here, so he had his kitchen door wide open. A couple of games in, we both suddenly notice that there's a hummingbird beating its wings between the blinds and the glass of the window by the door.

My friend got up and pulled the blinds away from the window, and I got in the space between and started trying to gently drive the hummer (which was a rufous, by the way) toward the door with my forearm. That was working pretty good, although it was very much a game of inches, and then the bird lit on one of my fingertips, but my next move was a blunder. I reached for the pocket containing my phone with my free hand--how cool it would be to have a pic of a hummingbird on my fingertip, right?--and with that hesitation, the bird flew back into the house, and got stuck between another set of blinds and window.

My buddy pulled the blinds back again, and I started doing the slow sweep, and it was right about then that my buddy's dog Rogue noticed what we were doing, and stuck his nose into the thick of things. Despite the canine complication, we managed to stay focused on the task at hand, and it was then that I realized we were probably too far from the door for the sweeping strategy to be very effective, so I brought my hands together with my fingers spread slightly apart and managed to lightly contain the hummer in the cage my hands had become. I carried it out and set it down on the porch rail, and it sat there for a second or so before cranking up its wings and flying away.

I only won two games to my buddy's eight victories this morning, but despite that, I'm still feeling pretty good about the way my day is going.

Any time we can be involved in truly helping another creature in need (be it human, animal, insect, or whatever) it is a powerful and life affirming event.  I came upon a nearly dead Mourning Dove a couple years ago. She couldn't move and was on her side. The only reason I knew she wasn't dead was because she blinked. I brought  her home and somehow managed to nurse her back to health. It took two weeks and alot of care, but she finally flew away. To this day anytime I see a Dove I'm flooded with love all over again. So glad to read your story Mike. Thanks for posting.

Nothing really says I love you like a hummer in the morning...

HD from downtown. Nothing but net.

Nicely done, Mike. Good focus. Kind of beautiful.

Hummingbirds are everywhere in Peru and they are considered a spirit animal of the Amazon. The Shipibo beilieve that a visit from a humming bird is an ancestor checking in on you. When i was in Peru, i woke up at early sunrise one morning and within a minute of staring up through the mosquito netting a hummingbird  flew in to our tambo and hovered directly in front of me for at least a full 5 count and then flew back out.  The Modoc tribe here in OK , which were  the only tribe in the US to be herded into OK on the Trail of Tears from west to east, believe Cardinals are ancestors visiting.

Thanks, gunkman and judit.

Joe, I've been visited by hummingbirds at some interesting times. Once, was when I was climbing the Mount of the Holy Cross in Colorado and getting close to the summit. I decided to sit down on a rock for a minute, and was taking in the view of where I'd just been when a hummer appeared right in front of my face. It hovered there for a few seconds and then buzzed off in the direction of the summit. Another time was at the Park West GD show in September 1983. I had hiked up above the crowd before the show, and was rolling a few joints when a hummer appeared before me, hovered for a few seconds, and then took off behind me. I turned to see him go, and as I did I noticed something else strange in the sky. It was a guy under a parachute, and as he got closer, I noticed he was wearing a tie dyed jumpsuit, had purple smoke trailing behind him, and seemed to be angling himself toward the crowd below. Not long after that, he landed right in the middle of the crowd on a tarp that some folks had spread out. I took that as my sign to head down the hill, and as I found a place near the rail on Phil's side, the band came out and we were off and running.
