And just to add to that in Bush v Gore they issued a stay on counting the ballots on December 7, had oral arguments on December 11, and issued their ruling on December 12.
Now we have to wait until April to hear Trump's absurd objection that he is immune to all prosecution that the lower court unanimously overturned.

A year ago, when Mr. Trump was charged criminally for the first time, in Manhattan, and then, over the course of the next five months, was indicted three more times — in Florida, Washington and Georgia — it seemed as if he would spend much of 2024 in front of a jury. Now, however, if events break his way, he could go to trial only once before the election in November.
In that case, a state judge in Manhattan set a start date of March 25 for the former president’s trial on charges of arranging hush-money payments to a porn star in an effort to avert a scandal on the eve of the 2016 election.
And on Friday, a federal judge in Florida is set to hold a hearing to reset the clock on Mr. Trump’s other federal trial — the one in which he stands accused of mishandling dozens of classified documents after he left office. That trial was scheduled to start in May, but now may or may not take place before Election Day.
The Georgia case is also mired in pretrial clashes that have cast doubt on when, or even whether, it will proceed.

Not sure if it's all about money. I suspect both money and koolaid fully compromise Thomas, and perhaps Alito as well, but 'm not as sure about the others ... although wouldn't be surprised if there are skeletons in their closets that could be used as extortion.
But even 2/9 might be enough for the rest of the non-liberal wing to be sucked into an unconscious vortex of denial that prompts them to overcompensate by intentionally seeking to be "above the fray" and pretending it's all business as usual with nothing-to-see-here regarding the slow-motion emergency that is unfolding.
More sinister possibility: there's been a series of threats by Putin's operatives / proxies that have targeted the 1-2 beyond Thomas and Alito to fold.

I think it is about the money. I think the billionaire class is terrified they will have to pay for the debt we ran up during Covid and for the coming Social Security and Medicare shortfalls. It's really not much as a percentage of GDP but that is how they roll, and that is who SCOTUS hangs out with. They think all the rest of the stuff with Trump is manageable and it doesn't effect them, but they have no problem risking burning the place down to save a few percentage points of their wealth that they and the next three generations can't spend.
We just went to see this documentary at a local theater. It's worth your time (25 minutes) to watch it. It's free on you tube. It was made by a guy raised in the evangelical movement but curious about how it all went sideways and how religion went political / MAGA.
“Spiritual Warriors: Decoding Christian Nationalism at the Capitol Riot” ---- is a 25-minute documentary on Christian Nationalism and its role in the Capitol Riot, as well as the continuing threat it poses to our pluralistic democracy.
Video footage from the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot shows a myriad of religious symbols and actions. Why do you have groups of Christians, as a riot is going on just yards away from them, singing praise and worship music? Why are people blowing shofars? Why are people speaking in tongues as tear-gas grenades detonate all around them?
In this new documentary based on three years of research, ICJS Protestant Scholar Matthew D. Taylor describes the central role the New Apostolic Reformation, a relatively new charismatic Christian movement, played in instigating the Capitol riot. The NAR continues to be a force in American politics and will wield considerable influence going into the 2024 election.
Once the Proud Boy types are deputized into the National Guard with the promise of big guns and uniforms -- and they are allowed and encouraged to pull over and detain certain people -- we can easily revert to a total police state.
Add loyalty oaths and 24 hr surveillance and license plate readers and facial recognition and big data and AI in the mix, don't be surprised when a drone follows your car back from the concert and you wake up in a "camp."
"I don’t want to say the mainstream media is covering up Trump’s cognitive disability, but they certainly aren’t covering it like the 5-alarm fire it is."
Biden's age aside, and the current frustration about Gaza, do we think that Trump has GAINED any new moderate-independent voters compared to where he was in 2020? It's an honest question. Has Trump gained more voters since then?
I don't think so, I think Trump has lost voters. What we see now in the primaries means nothing for November. The primaries are where all the koolaid drinkers show up for their Orangutan. Polls might show Trump ahead of Biden, some polls anyway, but I see that changing later this year. Obviously we need to make sure everyone who opposes Trump gets themselves out there to VOTE. Vote vote vote vote vote.
It seems like the media wants to paint a picture that more voters will support Trump as a way of congratulating him for escaping justice. I think that's a bullshit front. Let's see how people react when the NY state case seizes his property because he can't pay his fine later this month.
Anyway, it's going to come down to us, voting. These fuckers want us to give up on elections and think that elections are an unnecessary and outdated pain in the ass. Nope. Elections is what we do, and what we must do. Vote.
As always it's going to come down to a few states. Biden will win the popular vote but will he win it in enough of those states. Right now I say doubtful. The founding fathers made a huge mistake with the electoral college. They were trying to level the playing field but instead it became a big fuck you to majority rules.
~63% of eligible Americans are registered to vote, and ~66% of them voted in the last presidential election... that leaves a lot of non voters out there!
Trump is just a loser in so many ways. The only election he won was because the FBI director comes out one week before the election and basically calls Hillary Clinton a crook. Trump squeaked by in that one but certainly hasn't won anything since and his coattails have proved to be negative coattails. He hasn't added any new voters for himself; just keeps driving people away. The press loves to hype the "horse race" of the presidential election. Don't buy the hype. Biden will smoke his ass again.
To say i'm disappointed in our court system would be an understatement, but Trump will still stand trail in all these cases. We will get to see what juries think. Looks like most of these trails are going to end up being after Trump losses the election. That is a travesty, but we really need to keep Democrats in the Presidency to get the SCOTUS back on track. This Democracy is a long game and it is far from over. Don't fall for all the Trump hype, guy is the biggest loser of his generation.
The Right has developed concrete plans to make America into a much nastier place for anyone who dares to deviate from the white Christian patriarchal order. That’s what is on the ballot in November
What would a second Trump presidency look like? What happens if the Reactionary Right returns to power?
Over the past few months, different factions on the Right have presented detailed plans for what they want to do the next time they get back to the White House. Among them, “Project 2025,” launched in April 2022 under the leadership of the Heritage Foundation, stands out because it unites much of the conservative movement and the machine of think tanks as well as activist and lobbying groups behind the goal of installing a more effective, more ruthless rightwing regime.
Like many leaders of the reactionary right—Mike Johnson, Mike Davis, Stephen Miller, and so on—the currentheadoftheHeritageFoundation has a dull, forgettable name: KevinRoberts.
