Caught the return of Shakti about 16-17 years ago. Thrash raga. And Zakir's hands were moving so fast, they started to look like how fan blades sometimes appear to be moving backwards.
The show in SF at the symphony hall has long been sold out, but this thread bump reminded me to check again, and there was ONE seat available for $100.
I remember going to many showa at Wolf Trap over 40 years ago. They sold Dom Perignon at the concession stand. The original Wolf Trap burned down in thw 80's.
Saw the show tonight at Wolf Trap outside D.C. First time at the venue and it is a great place. I might try and write some kind of review in the comings days. All I will say at this late hour is that I'm still trying to pick my jaw up off the ground. Just go see this lineup if you get a chance. Seriously some of the most incredible music I have ever seen.
So I'm curious, are the listed guests on this tour, mostly Bela Fleck but also Scofield on some shows and Bill Frisell on at least one, opening acts or sitting in with Shakti?
I'm considering myself lucky as the show I'm seeing in San Francisco is one of the only shows that has no listed guests; lucky because no matter who they are I really don't like opening acts and with Mahavishnu John, Zakir Hussain and a brilliant violinist, why would I want or need another player taking time from those geniuses?
I'm quite sure the listed guest are all openers. Bela opened last night with about a 45 minute solo set of what he termed esoteric banjo music. He said he had been lucky enough to open 3 shows for Shakti as he was their biggest fan. Shakti was a 5 piece with everyone being an Indian musician except for Mclaughlin. I don't think you'd want any western tradition musician sitting in with these folks unless they were steeped in Indian musical tradition. You can go to the Shakti webpage and those will be the 5 musicians you will be seeing. Zakir has blown my mind every time I have seen him no matter the specific incarnation. I had not seen him in like 17 years or so, therefore was wondering how he is aging. He did not disappoint. My mind was blown. He paced himself a little I would say, but when he wanted to deliver the goods it was vintage Zakir. I had never seen Shakti before and boy what a sound they have, deep and rich. I talked to someone after the show who was a big Mclaughlin fan and seen him quite a few times with various artists and he said last light was the best performance he had witnessed of Maestro John McLaughlin. He said that Mclaughlin just seems more relaxed and in his element when playing with Zakir and within the Indian musical tradition. The vocalist, violinist and other percussionist were all simply mind blowing. Obvious real love between all these players and that certainly never hurts. GTTS.
Since the guests are all individuals (and all pretty damned good players) I got the impression they'd be sitting in with the group.
Still, I hope they don't add any opener to the show I'm seeing, and if they do they announce it so I can arrive accordingly.
I'm starting to really look forward to this one. I never saw the original group but I loved their albums. I saw Remember Shakti, whenever they did that project, but I didn't care for the mandolin and perhaps going in with unfair expectations I was generally underwhelmed, but I'm going into this one relaxed and feeling it's more just a chance to see "old friends" together again and hear a sound I loved when I was young.
Thanks for the info and reviews folks, and if anyone reading this is on the fence or has never seen either John or Zakir, most definitely.......
Never been so excited about a stream. I so want to drive from Baltimore to catch the Columbus show on the 29th, but can't. I can't believe tickets are still available, but what do I know. Saw them this past Wednesday and so wanted to see another show and now at least I can stream this. A most excellent turn of events. Many thanks for the heads up!
I enjoyed the Ryman show. Great night out and worth the travel. Scofield sat right in front of us for the Shakti set and seemed to enjoy it quite a bit.
