So much for the vows of poverty. I guess they took that as seriously as the priests take seriously their vows of chasity (unless buggering altar boys fits into some kind of loophole).
Considering how much the Catholic Church has ripped off people around the globe throughout the centuries, not much sympathy for them. Those gold filled relic rooms in the basements of European cathedrals are quite the sight to behold.
