Shiitake Logs Cut; Almost Right on Time...

Forums:

So one Zoner asked me about Red Oak logs for Shiitake cultivation a while back.

We discussed it all, but then the project got shelved.

Then I thought, "Why not cultivate a few Shiitake logs here, there is enough room and some Oak..."

So towards that project, I sliced up some 3-4 foot (that's a Meter or so for Europeans) logs and had the Hüsky drag them back home.

I'm gonna call them Quercus rubra or Red Oak. That's actually what those Trees are called, so why not.

Next step is to actually inoculate them there Logs with the Shiitake spawn.

The version I have is 'Plug Spawn' which are Oak dowels full of Mycelium. So I need to drill some holes in them Logs and insert those Plugs.

Film at Eleven ??

I have a friend in Tennessee who's been growing them for years. I don't know if he is right now, but it's been a good thing for him.

He doesn't make videos, but I've seen still shots.

^Paul Staments' Fungi Perfecti site has a lot of good info

and, of course, stuff they want you to buy...

good luck, Stu

I'm somewhat familiar w/ Mr. Stamets' work and have one or so of his books, also a signed copy of David Arora's "All That The Rain Promises" etc.

But the important thing is that  I did actually go out and procure the Perfect Red Oak logs this Day, just about right in Time.

The Sapwood / Heartwood ratio is quite Nice.  Caught them just before Bud Break...  I've heard that's important.

I did not actually measure each log for some absolute standard of length.  I was going for production and mobility, so they are 40" -> 46" lengths with a diameter of 4" - 10" with the majority of 6" -> 8" diameter.  Got them chopped and loaded on the Truck with only one minor glitch.  My bar-oil container was about empty, so I had to walk Hüsky back to the shack for a Fresh gallon of the stuff, before it got Dark.

Sweet double fishermans Stu.

So anyway now I've got to drill a million holes at just the right depth for the plugs. Then once they are in, some Paraffin has to get melted and applied to each hole to keep it sealed.  For that I'll have to hit Goodwill and find  buncha old candles. To apply the molten wax you use a turkey baster with a half-nail in the tip, keeps it all from leaking away.

I'll snap some fotos when the rain quits.

One million holes, or just one thousand?  For one million holes, you would need 1,000 bags of 1,000 dowels, which would be quite expensive, (but probably profitable!)

A spoon can also work to apply the wax, and whilst at goodwill, look for a temperature controlled deep-fat fryer....

Almost won tickets to Lake Street Dive in August!  Thanks to the Zoner who mentioned them in a post....

So Popular belief says that Oak is best.  I've got a Good supply of White Ash, and might try a couple logs of that just for growth & flavor comparison.

I'd say there are more Ash than Oak in my local Woods. If they grow alright on Ash, why not.

So  a side-by-side test grow will yield some realistic data.

No shroom growing workshop for Alex this year ):

We *are* however, foraging morels like mad!!!!!

It's also lovely ramp season (:

By the by, Alex has a special sealing wax, it's thicker than your average bear's candle...

And, drill your holes in a fashion that allows for spawn to have room for phatty growth

Good child-rearing advice as well.
